EPA eyeing 30 percent

Having failed to ram a key piece of his climate agenda through Congress in 2010, President Obama on Monday will endorse far-reaching new restrictions on carbon pollution widely expected to push states to embrace cap-and-trade-style systems. Details of the new regulations, to be announced by Environmental Protection Agency Secretary Gina McCarthy, have been kept under wraps, but leaked reports Sunday night suggested the administration will go even farther than many had expected, setting a goal of reducing carbon emissions from existing power plants by 30 percent by 2030. The agency already has proposed carbon

One other point, Remember all the restrictions put on metal cars when gas was less than $.39/gal. ( I worked one sunmer in high school) with taxes for countless years? Then, came all these "improvements," and today, both cars are being recalled in record numbers, gas has no ceiling, and most cars are are deathtrap in simple accidents.

Coal fired plants generate 40% of electricity sold in the US. Modifying the burners in all the coal fired plants to use natural gas would reduce emissions by roughly the 30% target. But this requires a capital expense and likely a operating expense without an increase in production. This will quite simply drain investment from growth that would have created jobs. Industries that require large amounts of electricity will need to build their own direct fired gas turbine co-generation facilities to supply the electricity and heating/cooling for their process and facilities. The consumer is going to get hosed as states require the power companies to support hair brained carbon capture and alternative energy schemes.

Beirut - Fears continue to spread in Lebanon about the presence of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) after the Sunni militant group claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on a central Beirut hotel, the third such attack in two weeks. The militant group has expanded its operations in both Syria and Iraq, giving rise to fears that it could also seek to start an insurgency against the Lebanese government at a time when the country still has no president. In a statement published on Friday, ISIS announced that a Saudi suicide bomber had attacked the Duroy Hotel in central Beirut. Three police officers were wounded in the attack.

A California man decided to turn the fear that drones will be abused by law enforcement officials on its head by using the technology to monitor police behavior. “I don’t think it’s a substitute for a hand-held camera, but it’s definitely a complement,” Daniel Saulmon of Torrance told the Los Angeles Times. Mr. Saulmon said he has been filming police behavior with the technology for a month, typically monitoring DUI checkpoints to make sure police aren’t abusing their power. He added that he is careful not to run afoul of any laws while filming. “I have to use common sense with it,” Saulmon said. “It’s easy to fly.
