A-10 planes slighted
in defense bill measure

Bloomberg News, by Roxana Tiron

Supporters of the A-10 warplane were rebuffed Friday as a U.S. House panel approved a defense spending measure that would let the Air Force retire the 1970s-era combat aircraft. The move by the appropriations subcommittee added to uncertainty over the Air Force’s plan to retire all 283 of the planes to save $4.2 billion over five years in a time of declining military spending. (Snip) The push to save the A-10 is being led by veterans who say it saved the lives of soldiers in ground combat during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as lawmakers representing

Comments:
Impressive aircraft with no replacement, as far as I´m aware, bring mothballed to save $4.2 billion over 5 years.

Meanwhile, each of us is taxed to the tune of $2.2 billion each year to provide multiple free cell phones to disenfranchised minorities.

How many soldiers might die for the price of 2 years´ worth of Obamaphones (which admittedly are very lucrative for Carlos Slim and others)? Ask your congressman.

It is an astounding weapons platform. As military aircraft go it´s exceptional. I´d 86 the Osprey from the military budget before getting rid of the Warthog.

It´s time to turn this aircraft over to the Army and have congress grant them a fixed-wing exemption.

It would be WAY easier to maintain the A-10 than the Apache. (though they should have both).

If Obama wasn´t intent on destroying our military alliances, he would sell / give the A-10s to Poland and the Baltic states to strengthen their defenses. Two hundred + A-10s operated by our NATO allies that border Russia would show our resolve to halt Putin´s attempt to reset Soviet domination over these countries.

Ukraine could also use a fleet of A-10s but in order to maintain the aircraft the bankrupt Ukrainian government would need loans from a nearly bankrupt US. Worse, US funds to Kiev would be passed onto Russia to pay the enormous energy debts Ukraine has amassed while the Warthogs languish on weed covered airfields.

This isn´t heavy lifting:

1. Do the Marines and Army need the capability of a Close Air Support Aircraft (CAS)?

2. Is a better CAS available or coming online soon?

3. Which is the better economic platform for the mission, the F-35 or the A-10?

4. Does the Marine Corps need fighter aircraft outside of the F-18 and the VIFF capable AV8B?

5. How much of this F-35 purchase for the Marine Corps is driven by a Pentagon cram down to drive down the per unit price of the politically connected F-35?

The answers all scream for the A-10 including giving them to the Army.

However, politics and Crony Capitalism is rearing its ugly head at the cost of the Grunt, including my son.

This has NOTHING to do with what´s right for this country.

The A-10, B-52 and C-130 provide mission capabilities that no other aircraft can adequately compete with.

Newer aircraft have phenomenal capabilities, mostly avionics and targeting, but don´t have the unique capabilities of these Oldies.

It´s a tale of ´The Tortoise and The Hare´.

The A-10 was first and foremost designed to survive a high level of battle damage while delivering devastating firepower in the CAS role.

It excels in the CAS role!

The F-35 was designed to perform many different missions while it excels at none of them. It is especially poor at CAS.

To depend on the F-35 for down and dirty CAS is ludicrous.

Also, the F-35 is Maintenance Intensive and if a serious problem is found at a training unit in NV, FL or TX, the entire worldwide fleet would be grounded.

Then.... Where would our Grunts be after a couple of dispatched Helo gunships were dispatched by Ruskie supplied MANPADS in some Muzzie infested cesspool?

OH! My Bad!

I forgot!

Our Grunts won´t be engaged in combat after 2016 according to the Marxist/Commie/Fascist POS in the WH!

Kafir

PS: This little budgeting problem will get amended on the House floor.

I vote for splitting them up between the Marines and Army, or just the Army if the Navy doesn´t want to go along.
Lacking that turn them over the the state of Texas (or just put them up for sale to the Texas public - intact). We´ll find a use for them.

The biggest problem with the A-10 is that it´s already been built and can´t further enrich the pockets of various well-connected defense contractors.

The University of Texas can consider race in undergraduate admissions to promote diversity, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday.
