Earth is nearing ´sixth great

The Week, by Jordan Valinsky

Is the end near? Scientists at Duke University say the world is on the brink of its sixth great extinction, since certain species of plants and animals are now dying out at least 1,000 times faster than they did before humans came into existence. The study, published Thursday in the journal Science, measured the the rate at which species are disappearing from Earth. In 1995, the researchers found that the pre-human rate of extinctions was roughly 1. Now, that rate is about 100 to 1,000. Stuart Pimm, the study's lead author, said habitat loss is mostly to blame for the increasing death rates. As humans continue to alter and destroy more land,

Not even a Sandra Fluke.

So can anyone name just one species that went extinct in the last 10 years. But last year they discovered over 100 new species. Frogs, sharks, gecko´s etc.

Guess these "scientists" don´t believe in evolution.

Survival of the fittest and natural selection? If you believe that - you have to accept extinction. If you try to protect endangered species you are thwarting evolution. Do they want to stop evolution, or maybe they really don´t believe in it.

Don´t evolutionists believe that humans evolved from lower forms of life? I´m still waiting for someone to show me an evolution / relationship diagram of a dinosaur, a carrot, a rattle snake and a human.

Besides, we are in an era where we have learned - the hard way - not to trust scientists. Thank you AGW Scammers.

This, and all the like stories told by the left alarmists have the same effect on me: they are so amusing and delightful to read!

Yawn. So some tiny creature, already down to a small remnant population in a limited area, that requires some precise combination of oddball factors will actually wink out in the next 5 years instead of the next 100 years.

So what? Oddball niche ecologies create oddball niche species, and these species are born with one foot in the grave and one on a banana peel. In effect, they have been found wanting - not able to adapt to minor changes, they cease to exist. Not important, nothing to worry about.

The kinds of things that we SHOULD worry about are entirely stupid and brainless things like massively overfishing the Grand Banks area. This is actually important, stupid and unnecessary - and we should stop it. But some silly little animal that is in a niche environment - mostly no big deal.
Pick your battles - I´ll support fishing limits for the Grand Banks and similar MEANINGFUL issues, but leave most of these stupid things alone.

Here we go again.

Every ten years or so, the government discovers a crisis so dire it can only be rectified by spending large amounts of tax dollars. If not, we´re all gonna die.

1950s: Atomic power
1960s: The Population Explosion
1970s: Global Cooling
1980s: Acid Rain
1990s: The Ozone Hole
2000s: Global Warming

Add to these the “lesser” catastrophes: swine flu, second-hand smoke, bird flu, trans-fats, the hanta virus, alar, depletion of the rain forest, SARS, pesticides, West Nile virus, various
hemorrhagic fevers, and my particular favorite, Y2K. All of these were supposed to end life as we know it.

Forgive me if I don´t take this new one any more seriously than I did the others.

Washington — Is racial animosity behind some political criticism of the Obama administration? That’s what Attorney General Eric Holder said on Sunday. The exact phrase he used was “racial animus,” which he said motivates some of his and Obama’s political opponents. (Snip) At the right-leaning "Hot Air!" Noah Rothman used even tougher language. The Obama administration long ago perfected the art of cultivating the sense among its defenders that lingering racism inspires most of its critics, according to Mr. Rothman. If the US was still so racially sensitive, why did it reelect an African-American president?
