De Blasio and the Sages

Editorials defending Mayor de Blasio are not our usual line, but it’s hard to recall a moment quite like the New York Times’ tirade against His Honor for appearing this week at the annual the annual banquet of the Agudath Israel. The Agudah is the largest grass roots organization of fervently religious Jews. It has been holding an annual dinner for 92 years. It packs the Hilton’s ballroom with men in black garb and gray beards. They raise money for Jewish schools. Distinguished guests — judges, mayors, senators — are thrilled to come. The Times wants to change that.

For a couple years, NASA has been talking about sending people to Mars by 2035. That goal is still on the books, despite recent upheaval in the space program, according to two of the agency´s top scientists. "In the near term, Mars remains our primary focus," Ellen Stofan, NASA´s chief scientist said May 15 in a talk at the Royal Institution in London. Her visit and that of Jim Adams, the agency´s deputy chief technologist, can be viewed in this YouTube video. "This is not something any one nation can do on their own," Stofan said. The family of a 65 year-old veteran claims that VA police stomped on the veterans head and neck, causing him to suffer a stroke and die several weeks later, a new lawsuit alleges. On May 25, 2011, Jonathan Montano was waiting several hours to undergo dialysis treatment at the Loma Linda VA facility when he grew frustrated, reports Courthouse News Service. With an IV still in his arm, Montano made his way towards the hospital exit, saying that he would get treatment at the Long Beach VA facility instead. Norma Montano, the veteran’s wife of 44 years, left the hospital

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Puffing on a hookah may be a relaxing recreational activity, but one recent study might have smokers looking for a new hobby. A report earlier this month from the American Association for Cancer Research revealed that young adults who smoked water pipes in hookah bars had elevated levels of nicotine, cotinine, tobacco-related cancer-causing agents, and volatile organic compounds (VOC) in their urine, and this may increase their risk for cancer and other chronic diseases. Just a single evening of water pipe smoking in a hookah bar showed that young men and women had in their urine

If I told you a really good story, then admitted it was based in large part on the word of a convicted liar, would you believe the story? If I never told you the source was a convicted liar but you found out later, would you ever believe me again? Readers of The New York Times now face that dilemma because the paper is dancing around the perjury past of a prime source. A front-page news article on May 11 and a Monday editorial both relied heavily on former Police Officer Bobby Hadid to criticize the NYPD for trying to recruit

Christianity will rise as sceptics

The world could see a resurgence of Christianity driven by population decline in sceptical countries, the geneticist Steve Jones has claimed. Professor Jones said history had proven that religion grows rapidly during large population booms, particularly in poorer countries. He argued that rapid growth in Africa could spark a new resurgence of major religions like Christianity. However in increasingly atheist countries in Europe people are no longer reproducing in sufficient numbers to avoid population decline, he told the Hay Literary Festival. “Britain is the only country in Europe that’s replacing its population,” said Prof Jones. “We atheists sometimes congratulate ourselves

Cardinal Theodore McCarrick is among the Catholic Church’s ultimate road warriors, travelling across the globe despite his advanced age to serve as an informal diplomatic troubleshooter. Few religious leaders, therefore, may be in a better position to evaluate just what Pope Francis has gotten himself into by taking on the seemingly intractable Israeli/Palestinian conflict. The 83-year-old McCarrick, a former archbishop of Washington, D.C., was in the Gaza Strip last week to monitor the situation facing the small but symbolically important Catholic population, and then joined the papal trip in Jordan and in Jerusalem. According to McCarrick, Francis isn’t concerned in

California killer Elliot Rodger blamed his violent misogyny on a pretty former childhood pal who went on to become his vision of all “mean, cruel and heartless” women. Rodger became obsessed with the fellow British ex-pat and now-model, who was in seventh grade while he was eighth in the same California private school, according to his chilling manifesto. In the twisted document, Rodger admitted he had a crush on the girl, but the feeling was apparently not reciprocated, and he hated her for it. “My experience during Middle School really darkened my view of the world, and it would only

High school teachers lured our kids

It was reading, writing and religious brainwashing at this top Connecticut high school. Staffers at Avon High indoctrinated three once-happy girls into a death-obsessed religious cult that had them speaking in tongues and acting like zombies, a federal civil rights lawsuit filed by their parents charges. Three Spanish teachers and a guidance counselor “taught students to believe in superstition, magic and a non-scientific, anti-intellectual world view,” the suit says. “They lost their humor and their empathy. They began speaking in a bizarre new language. They became unable to think critically or independently. They became dependent on the school teachers and guidance

Black Beach Week used to get all the glory: Every Memorial Day weekend, 300,000 black people gathered in Miami Beach to get their freak on. And also create a tsunami of violence, robbery, shootings, carjackings, vandalism, mayhem, noise and trash. But this year, many party-goers complained that Black Beach Week -- only reporters call it “Urban Beach Week” -- just wasn’t as much fun any more: Too many cops, tactical vehicles, helicopters, lights, towers, cameras, suspicion. Not enough chaos. Not to worry: The rest of the country picked up the slack. Black mob violence over the holiday weekend was reported in more

Maya Angelou, an author more revered than read, passed away at 86 on Wednesday. She is survived by her seven autobiographies. In addition to Angelou playing Boswell to Angelou’s Johnson, Angelou acted, wrote poetry, danced, and sang. Was she an actress, poet, dancer, or singer? People liked her politics, and, out of ideological solidarity, reflexively praised her talents in multitudinous endeavors. At her most irresponsible, she embraced Fidel Castro, Malcolm X, and Bill Clinton—a mistake for a lady of any age. (Snip) In this spirit, she insisted that others call her “Dr. Angelou” though she never obtained a college degree. The

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki was openly mocked by the assembled press corps Thursday after saying President Obama “doesn’t give himself enough credit for what he’s done around the world.” Associated Press reporter Matt Lee asked sarcastically whether he deserved 200 percent credit, while another one wondered for what “accomplishments” Psaki meant he deserves more praise. “For engagement initiatives like Iran, what we’ve done on Ukraine, efforts to dive in and engage around the world,” she said. “I mean, Russia has still annexed Crimea,” another reporter asked. “I mean, Iran — there’s ongoing negotiations,

DENVER— Colorado´s Civil Rights Commission on Friday ordered a baker to make wedding cakes for same-sex couples, finding his religious objections to the practice did not trump the state´s anti-discrimination statutes. The unanimous ruling from the seven-member commission upheld an administrative law judge´s finding in December that Jack Phillips violated civil rights law when he refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple in 2012. The couple sued. "I can believe anything I want, but if I´m going to do business here, I´d ought to not discriminate against people," Commissioner Raju Jaram said. Phillips, a devout Christian who

President Obama will call on all American adults Friday to make a long-term commitment to mentoring black and Hispanic boys as part of his initiative to help young men of color succeed in school. Aides said Mr. Obama will review with his Cabinet Friday a report from a White House task force on his program called “My Brother’s Keeper,” which he launched in February. “It is important that all children have caring adults who are engaged in their lives,” the report states. “But too many young people lack this support. Michelle Obama won’t rest until we are all scrounging for berries and chomping leafy vegetation in the forest. Or until she and her fellow progressives regulate the entire food industry Soviet-style. Four years and $12 billion later, her campaign to replace French fries and pizza with green pepper strips and Mexican turnip roots in school cafeterias has tanked. Kids in Kentucky said the food tasted like "vomit." Students in California were selling chips and candy bars on the black market. Lihue, Hawaii - A judge sentenced a Hawaii man to one year of probation and a $200 fine for making his son walk a mile home from school as a form of discipline. Judge Kathleen Watanabe called the punishment "old-school" and no longer appropriate, the Garden Island newspaper reported Thursday. When the son didn´t respond, Demond made him walk home to think about his actions. The age of the boy is unclear. Demond's attorney and a prosecutor didn't immediately respond to a request seeking
