VA Scandal: How a
General Lost Command

Daily Beast, by Jacob Siegel

On Friday, VA chief Eric Shinseki finally publicly took charge of the scandal engulfing his agency. Three weeks ago, it might have been a campaign plan—instead of a valediction. In the closing remarks of a speech made in his final hours as VA Secretary, Eric Shinseki, the former four-star general, finally sounded like an officer in command. He took responsibility for “indefensible” corruption inside the VA, fired leaders he believed were behind it, and gave orders to triage the problem. Hours later, President Obama announced he had accepted Shinseki’s resignation and appointed a new acting secretary to head the VA. If Shinseki

I am tired of hearing about the General´s honorable service to the nation during his military career...What about the men and women who have died under the VA´s criminal care? They served too. Do they not count as much as a General? It seems the General deserves all the flowery speeches and the lowly vets get the death panel ruling treatment.

Look we all know some vet who was treated poorly but the VA. The VA gave postal service quality healthcare, that was known. What made this a truly repulsive scandal is the falsifying of the wait lists by bureaucrats (all Democrats) for political (to make obama look good) and personal gain. To receive a bonus and take that blood money knowing what was going on is despicable. Just another example as to why we need to get rid of Federal unions.

Wait. I´d rather not condemn the entire VA healthcare system, because I know most of it to be caring, innovative and successful. The bureaucrats/pencil-pushers/full-time union workers are primarily to blame for the scheduling coverups and subsequent treatment delays. I heard a retired general yesterday on Fox saying that most vets prefer getting treatment at the VA centers, where the medical staff is familiar with problems unique to the military. Let´s fix the problems, which are systemic, but there are babies in that bathwater, my friends.

The fact that hospitals all over the country were able to pass off wildly inaccurate numbers without the VA headquarters catching on suggests not only a basic failure in the oversight process, but a broken relationship between top leaders and subordinates.

My take on this is that the VA Headquarters in DC knew about the lists and maybe even instigated in creating them. The Lists problem was/is mammoth and not isolated at all. It´s totally inconceivable that the VA was blind to what was occurring?

I am a Vietnam vet, and it took me 2 years to get to 30% disability and I now have to fight for every increase as my diabetes effects increase. I applied in April of 2012, and got my check yesterday for the "back pay".

The workers at Sepulveda and West LA are super, most are vets, and they treat me right. It´s the system that´s bad, not the folks. It took them over a year to replace the camera system for IDs.

Any out of work vet should apply as they are horribly understaffed. I am going to meet with the IT folks in West LA this week, and see if I can get some part time work.

I posted this to show it´s not just the "new" vets having issues. Heck I didn´t even know I qualified for anything til 2012 and I got out in ´76.

Today´s military in not what it used to be. Where are the Eisenhower´s, Patton´s, Lemay´s, Bradley´s, McAuther´s and the rest of that group. Those men were real warriors. And remember, the military´s job is to kill people and break things. I know that there are a gazillion things that go into it, but that is the bottom line. What it is NOT is a social experiment breeding ground, which is has partly become. We now have generals that are more politician than they are warrior. We are supposed to have CIVILIAN politicians to oversee the military, but not to run it. Shinseki is just one of those that made the conscious decision to become a politician rather than to be the warrior he once was. As head of the VA, he could have taken hold and made huge changes if he wanted to. But he fell into the mud hold of wanting to cover Obozo´s rear end. And I´m not going to sit here and believe that all of the corruption taking place with the scheduling of appointments wasn´t known at the higher up echelons. Someone up there knew.

A little known fact is that the Medicare fraud division extorts huge sums of money from hospitals and providers routinely, not by using the Medicare fraud statutes, but rather an 1865 fraud statute signed into law by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War.

That law requires only three elements to prove federal fraud: the person or entity billed and was paid by the Feds, the bill was inaccurate and/or incomplete, and the infraction occurred more than once. A fine can be levied for each instance.

Obviously, anyone doing any amount of business with Medicare will eventually be guilty, if only by innocent error. The feds tally up the fines, threaten prosecution, and settle for a fraction.

Now, if Shinseki wanted to stop the VA waiting list gaming, all he had to do was use that federal fraud act to prosecute one prominent individual, and the practice would stop immediately. But he didn’t.

So let’s not shed too many tears for him, despite his service record.

Most rational people judge another person´s intentions by what that person DOES, not by what that person SAYS. Talk is cheap. This Administration, especially POTUS, talks a lot about supporting Veterans, but shows its true negative intentions by the criminally negligent manner in which it provides health care to the special group of men and women who have earned their right to the care by the sacrifices in blood that they have made. Like gone2pot points out with his Rudyard Kipling quotes, this sort of two-faced BS goes back to the British Army, the Roman Legions, and to any society that only sees its military as a useful tool in times of danger. When I came back from RVN, my brothers (vast majority were men) received nothing by vilification. Today progressives make a phony show of thanking these wonderful warriors, but demonstrate their real feelings by the subtle but negative comments about our troops and their mental health or alleged propensity for violence, or claimed financial irresponsibility. Kipling pointed out that "Tommy" saw through the facade. GI Joe does too. There will be a reckoning. See you at the voting booth in November.

How in the world did he reach the rank of four star general, with his level of performance at the VA? That is quite a feat and he just could not measure up, here, in this role? Right-got it! There have been other four star generals in American history who excelled at other tasks after their war, so something is amiss here, doesnot add up. There did not seem
to be any emotion in this man, not even a smidgen-certainly no passion.

Judge Jeanine Piro, on FoxTVNews, twice every Saturday night, thirty years a prosecuting attorney, is one of the few really hard hitting, TV authorities !
No Juan, Geraldo, Beckel softie, she!

Last night she really hit the corrupted, union dominated
Veteran Administration, a two barrel shotgun !

She described that a vet calls the doctor, gets no appointment, never get back, his name goes in the garbage can, he gets sicker, he´s on the death list
(and we add that not one McLain Rubio Schumer, Reid member of Congress lifted a finger to help them all !).
Firing Siseki means NOTHING, unions run VA, not some bureaucrat politician general, they´re dying here in America, not in the battlefield. They all knew in 2007 !
Union bonuses for falsifying records and can´t fire them.
Budget increases phenomenal 153.8 BILLION ! ! !

There must be a Fed CRIMINAL investigation WITHOUT Holder and Obama. The crime: criminally negligent homicide, involuntary manslaughter, conspiracy, fraud,
Obstruction of justice by intimidation of whistleblowers, larceny, creating false records, lawlessness, corruption.

This is a disgrace on our nation and an IMPEACHABLE
OFFENSE that equals and tops Benghazi, IRS, NSA, AP wiretapping, Fast and Furious, and the Massive smuggling of thirty million Catholic driven alien invaders.

I agree with most of the negative comments posted here except about patient care. I was a volunteer at the Detroit VA Hospital for a year or so in 1995 and the care was excellent. However, getting inside the door and appointments was something else. Alot of red tape there as I recall. Wasn´t any union then as I remember either.

Federal employees, like all Americans, are entitled to hold passionate political beliefs. Most executive branch federal employees, however, may not engage in certain political activities, thanks to an anti-conflict of interest principle enshrined in a federal law called the Hatch Act. To wit, President Bush requested the resignation of his GSA administrator in 2008 after the US Office of Special Counsel determined she had violated federal law by participating in a video conference with Karl Rove and sending out partisan letters. That´s up from 5 percent in June, and is the highest number Gallup has registered for immigration since 2006, when 15 percent said it was the nation´s most pressing problem. Gallup’s new survey found immigration is virtually tied with “dissatisfaction with government” as the nation´s top problem. The economy and unemployment rank below immigration and “dissatisfaction with government" as top problems, the new poll found. Only 8 percent now rate healthcare as the top problem, down from 16 percent in January, when

How would you feel if someone promised to give you a car, and then reneged on that pledge? That’s how all Americans should feel when it comes to ObamaCare -- because Barack Obama’s failed and discredited campaign promise to lower health insurance premiums has cost the average American family an amount equal to the price of many new cars. During his 2008 campaign, one of then-Senator Obama’s most audacious promises was that his health plan would reduce premiums by $2,500 for the average family. His repeatedly made his pledge on videotape; you can view those promises here. But health insurance premiums
