Paleo, vegan, gluten-free -- the only certainty
about health trends is their reversal

Los Angeles Times, by David Sax

During my last visit to Los Angeles, in March, I chronicled my meals by the dietary restrictions of my dining companions. For breakfast one day, I ate in Los Feliz with four friends who were varying degrees of gluten-free. One had suddenly discovered a gluten intolerance, while another felt it would be better for her pregnancy. I ordered ricotta pancakes — and enjoyed each glutinous bite. Another day, I met my friend Marko for lunch in Venice, where he shunned the artisan toast with house ricotta because he was on the paleo diet. Although no refined grains, sugar or dairy

Well David, your friends are obviously of the Pied Piper type who believe everything wacko libtards tell them to eat. No wonder they´re all so stupid.

I recently ate lunch at a little restaurant owned by a family from El Salvador. I had pupusas, curtido and a Coke from Mexico (made with real sugar). It was delicious. I suspect the foodies would want to know the provenance of the cheese in the pupusas (or if they were vegan, they´d shudder at the thought of eating it). All I know is that the food was good and I enjoyed myself. And isn´t that what eating out should be?

Really, all you need for an explanation is a copy of Dr. Seuss´ Sneeches book. Some of the sneeches have plain bellies and some have stars upon thars. Along comes Sylvester McMonkey McBean who brings a big contraption to put stars on the plain bellies. But the already-starred bellies can´t stand it and get their stars removed. And so on. It´s all about having something that no-one else has. It makes you special and rare. Old Sylvester rolls out of town with everyone´s last dollar.

How special to be able to tell everyone within hearing distance about how unique your diet is. Even better if the only things you can eat are very rare and expensive. That´s really all it comes down to -- convincing people how different and therefor SPECIAL you are. It´s the same with fashion --once we´ve all bought several pairs of bell-bottom jeans, the designers (Sylvester McMonkey McBean and his ilk) tell us how horrible bell-bottoms are and that we all need to be wearing tight leggings. And we happily line up to give them our last dollars.

Many if not most people who hide behind meat-free, gluten-free, sugar-free, etc. diets do so because they are basically anorexic and are terrified of gaining weight. My cousin, who eats only fish on the rare occasions she consumes protein, was recently diagnosed with mercury poisoning. My next-door neighbor, a 61-year-old long-time vegan is depressed because his doctor just informed him he has the bone density of a 90-year-old. "You can eat whatever you want --as long as you eat in moderation." That´s what my 101-year-old mother, who starts every day with bacon and eggs and pours half-and-half on her Special K, has been saying all her life. Who am I to argue with that?

Well, my 15yr. old granddaughter has eczema and three months ago went gluten free. She is now rash free. I´ve been bothered by a rash on my ankle and the back of my left hand for over a year. I tried the gluten free diet for a month and it didn´t help at all. So go figure.

Given the choice, I usually eat food prepared from ´scratch´. It´s CHEAPER.

Our livers can convert carbohydrates to fat. Many poor people are overweight, due to this.

Being over 60, I have seen fads and hysterics. The Carter Years, global cooling, global warming, SARS, fad diets, etc. Seeing government support for many of these, I have learned skepticism. What´s disappointing is folks my parent´s age, still trusting government and scientists.

Throughout her campaign for U.S. Senate, Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes has tried to run and hide from Washington liberals in her party headlined by President Barack Obama and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Not anymore. Recently, and incredibly, Grimes officially aligned herself with the most exotic Democratic Party segments by campaigning with the doyenne of the leftist hierarchy, former Harvard professor, and now U.S. senator from Massachusetts, Elizabeth Warren. Kentucky´s small-business owners believe in promoting America´s economic advantages such as our natural energy resources. When Michelle Nunn attended a fundraiser on Capitol Hill the other day, as we reported, one of the three co-sponsors of the event was Virtual Murrell, who owns a government relations firm in D.C. The conservative National Review dug deeper into Murrell’s background and found quite a tale: Murrell was indicted in 1994 by a federal grand jury on charges that he solicited and received over $37,000 in bribes from businesses in San Francisco while serving as an aide to an Oakland city councilman. The indictment found him guilty of violating the Hobbs Act, a federal statute that prohibits elected and

Police say the 34-year-old shoplifting suspect put the undergarments in her purse Thursday afternoon and then walked out of the store without paying, according to a Rock Hill police report. She then fled in a white ice cream truck. An officer was familiar with a woman matching the suspect´s description who operated an ice cream truck. President Obama’s recent campaign-style adventures outside of the White House bubble are a chance for the president to shed the confines of his office, relishing the beer, barbecue, and face-to-face conversations with everyday Americans he wistfully describes as too inaccessible as president. But the more frequently “the bear gets loose”, as the president and top staffers jokingly refer to the unscheduled forays away from the White House grounds, the more heartburn the president causes for the Secret Service agents charged with protecting his life. Obama himself acknowledges that his impromptu walks and trips to restaurants can prove stressful for his

President Obama is a political trailblazer, but some of the precedents he’s setting are highly dubious. At the top of my list would be his habit of relentlessly berating his political opponents at the same time he’s asking for their help. Convinced that the huge recent influx of undocumented women and children from Central America requires an emergency federal response, Obama asked last week for nearly $4 billion in emergency funds from Congress. But even while making this supplemental request, Obama couldn’t resist relentlessly mocking the very House Republicans whose votes he needs. “This should not be hard,” Obama explained dismissively. “Congress

As Palestinian terror dramatically escalates, the Obama administration is working hard – not to defeat the terrorists, but to tie Israel’s hands behind its back. Sure, there is background noise paying lip-service to an Israeli right of self-defense and babbling about a Palestinian peace partner. The reality, however, is that responsibility for the harrowing transition from the kidnap and murder of three Jewish teenagers by Hamas members to 4 million Israelis running in terror from Hamas rocket attacks leads directly to the White House. Here are the dots that need to be connected. On June 2, President Obama emboldened Hamas by

A huge question in Democratic politics - other than “When is Hillary going to announce?” - concerns whether or not Senator Elizabeth Warren (D – Cherokee Nation) will run for president. If Hillary does not run, it is almost certain that Warren will. Well-known for her populist and Occupy-esque perspectives on healthcare, taxes, income redistribution and everything in-between, she is one of the rising stars of the Democratic party. Anticipating that it could happen, we’re getting out in front and establish her as a storyteller, to put it nicely, about her wealth.
