LOS ANGELES- Los Angeles Clippers co-owner Donald Sterling has filed suit in federal court against the NBA and Commissioner Adam Silver and is asking for damages in excess of $1 billion. The suit was filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. It alleges that the league violated Sterling´s constitutional rights by relying on information from an "illegal" recording that publicized racist remarks he made to a girlfriend. It also says the league committed a breach of contract by fining Sterling $2.5 million and violated antitrust laws by forcing a sale. On Friday, the NBA called off a hearing to

What Sterling was prodded into saying was racist, ignorant, stupid, and disgraceful, but the NBA´s unilateral action to take away his team and ban him from any further association with his team or the league struck me as excessive and possibly illegal. Do we still have a First Amendment? Are we allowed to offend others? Is saying stupid stuff now against the law? It´s not as if this crotchety old man killed anyone. He might actually win his lawsuit.

Despite the fact that Sterling appears to be a despicable human being, the NBA should have no power over his team ownership based on an illegal recording of a private statement. If ANY American can be punished in this manner for what he says in private, then many readers of this could have something to worry about should that "stuff" you said about "them" in your own home goes public. Next and soon is the Thought Police who will be empowered to decide "what you meant" and will assign you to mandatory sensitivity training to purge you of your "hate". What a great way to SHUT YOU UP.

It´s all in the anti-trust issue. Sterling is supposedly an independent businessman, the Clippers part of a league. Unlike the "sport" of MLB, the "business of sport" NBA has no anti-trust immunity. The Association overreacted and now Silver will have to do some quick, quiet fixing. I suspect that $2 billion bid on the team was a ruse to subject the NBA to a high indemnity if it proceeds to re-possess the Clippers. Hard to deny the $2 billion value of a bid on the table with a $500 million buyout. Now Donald sues the NBA...brilliant!

Sterling was accused of expressing his feelings in private. What about those who DO bad things yet get a pass. Michael Vick tortured dogs, yet was hired by the Eagles and Obama even congratulated the team for it. Now there is the book about Jackie Kennedy having affairs with married men, including her two brothers-in-law. Had the media covered up for her? David Letterman was guilty of sexual harassment, yet no demands for him to resign. And that senator from N accused of sex with underaged girls? Not even a hearing.

#14 sounds as if he understands the status of the NBA v MLB. Useful information, I had thought the NBA would share MLB anti-trust status.

Sterling may hold better cards than I thought.

Professional sports is a curious business because the teams must both cooperate and compete. A league won´t work if they do not do both.

In the beginning of the 2009 flu season, Barack Obama declared the H1N1 swine flu a national emergency. By October of that year 1,000 people had already died, and according to the president there was the threat of a pandemic. In order to hasten treatment and convince Americans to line up like lemmings for a flu shot, Obama gave former Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius a one-time authorization to bypass standard federal regulations to quickly respond to the outbreak. The president repeatedly warned the public that a pandemic was approaching, and that the numbers of people getting sick

Protests from local elected officials in Maryland this weekend forced the Health and Human Services Department (HHS) to cancel its plans to send illegal immigrant children to an Army Reserve center in Westminster, which is about 35 miles from Baltimore. Maryland Democrat Gov. Martin O´Malley said illegal immigrant children flooding across the border should be considered "refugees" and all be given asylum status, but after Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) publicized the federal government´s last-minute plans to sneak illegal immigrant children into Maryland, there was considerable blowback.
