Doctor Shortage Is Cited
in Delays at V.A. Hospitals

New York Times, by Richard A. Oppel Jr and Abby Goodnough

Original Article

Dr. Phyllis Hollenbeck, a primary care physician, took a job at the Veterans Affairs medical center in Jackson, Miss., in 2008 expecting fulfilling work and a lighter patient load than she had had in private practice. What she found was quite different: 13-hour workdays fueled by large patient loads that kept growing as colleagues quit and were not replaced. Appalled by what she saw, Dr. Hollenbeck filed a whistle-blower complaint and changed jobs. A subsequent investigation by the Department of Veterans Affairs concluded last fall that indeed the Jackson hospital did not have enough primary care doctors, resulting in nurse practitioners’ handling

The whole country has not had enough primary care physicians for years - because the number of medical residencies is limited by the Government.

okay, so they purposely didn´t hire enough doctors. Probably due to their have 60 high paid non-medical executives for every 40 doctors.

Again, the VA has plenty of money for pricey bureaucrats, the latest in office and conference room decor and outrageous employee bonuses. They do not have enough physicians by choice.

Ok let´s get past the BS. Audit the Doctors time...how many patients did doctor x see each day. There are a minimum of 8 hours per shift, with a 15 minute/patient (generous) rate that´s 32. I doubt the doctors se more than 10...they just must have that time to socialize with the cute nurses and all that.

As for the administrators, what are they doing all day? How hard is it to watch others work...IF they are actually working?

Well now it begins to make sense. You have a serious shortage of doctors so you simply make a fake waiting list of the most seriously ill patients and bingo you begin to allow them to die while waiting and that balances out the Dr. shortage.

A solution that only a government program could devise.

Let´s be fair. Most of the doctors do their job at the VA, but their pay is below standard but are there because of a personal desire to help vets in need. They are restricted and controlled by bureaucrats who are outside the medical knowledge base. Typical gummint setup and coming to each one of us soon!

O course as in any system there are leaches who shun work and responsibility. Most of the VA doctors I´ve known are frustrated and po´d over the way the VA is run. Many opt out for greener pastures when needed most because they can´t take the garbage management anymore.

Didn´t Ayn Rand describe this in Atlas Shrugged? Government control via price control, supply control and non market allocation of resources leads to shortages. Shortages lead to rationing which is exactly what is going on here. Let´s not have any delusions, these are very sick patients that need far more than Family practice doctors. They need specialist. And since goobernment limits the numbers of doctors, the number of specialist also is restricted. Since the last century, the most this country has to take care of ICU patients (the sickest of the sick) is a full 33% below the required manpower. And to solve the cost issue, goobernment decreases the number of doctors trained in ICU care and decreased how much they are paid. Thus, exacerbating the problem. This isn’t a major scandal, this is the moment the Titanic hit the iceberg. The real disaster is about to unfold and all of us will be impacted. The shortage affects all of us and will only get worse.

Take the doctors and nurses who are doing union work and being paid by the taxpayers and put them into patient service. Pay the doctors for work performed and not bonus them because they are government employees. Then get out of here with the excuses.

I don´t see why we have bureaucrats in charge. I would much rather see a military presence in the administration of the VA facilities. After all that´s who the recipients are. I think the VA was established to consolidate the medical treatment for all the branches of service instead of having each branch with it´s own. Maybe it´s time to go to a distributed system somewhat. Or, at least get the various branches represented. Dump the bureaucrats (parasites).

Where are the medical students graduating going after med school ? Back to their home country ?

Who remembers years ago when they said there were too many students going to med school so they gave more seats to foreign students ?

Less than 3 percent of the U.S. population identify themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Tuesday in the first large-scale government survey measuring Americans’ sexual orientation. The National Health Interview Survey, which is the government’s premier tool for annually assessing Americans’ health and behaviors, found that 1.6 percent of adults self-identify as gay or lesbian, and 0.7 percent consider themselves bisexual. The overwhelming majority of adults, 96.6 percent, labeled themselves as straight in the 2013 survey. An additional 1.1 percent declined to answer, responded “I don’t know the answer” or said they were “something

Tomorrow is the deadline for the public to comment on the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) attempt to regulate the Internet under the seemingly innocuous moniker of “net neutrality.” The architect of this movement, and the man who coined the term “net neutrality,” is Columbia law professor Tim Wu. Unfortunately, he has proved to be immensely influential among regulators. Net neutrality rules have been sold for a decade as a way to keep the Internet “open and free” by keeping Internet service providers (ISPs), such as phone and cable companies, from blocking or degrading Web sites. Its advocates have argued that ISPs

For the mothers of those missing from this dusty northern Nigerian town, nightfall is a time when rest proves impossible, when three hours of fitful dozing is the most one can hope for. And for the fathers, it is a time for round the-clock-vigils, patrolling the edges of town in case of yet more attacks. Some readers and commentators have described the story as an overheated statement of the obvious: that surveillance of one person includes the content of people who talk to him. Others have said The Washington Post, not the government, invaded the privacy

Where is the red line of impeachment? In theory, a red line might be located somewhere on a list of impeachable offenses – perhaps at the point where a certain number of transgressions is exceeded, or next to a specific instance because of its significance or impact. In reality, though, that red line exists along a spectrum of “political will.” As Andrew McCarthy explained: “You can have a thousand provable impeachable offenses, but before Congress may remove the president from power, there must be strong popular support – a public will that cuts across partisan and ideological lines.”
