Newark — Dave Herman, the former disc jockey and radio personality charged last year with trying to lure a 7-year-old girl to the U.S. Virgin Islands to sexually abuse her, died this morning, authorities said. Herman, 78, who was being held at the Essex County Jail, died at University Hospital in the city, a county spokesman said. He had complained of chest pains Wednesday night and was taken to University, the spokesman said. Herman had been in custody since his arrest in October at the St. Croix airport. Despite opposition from Orange County prosecutors, a child molester with 17 known victims will be released from a state mental hospital within 72 hours, authorities said Thursday. The Orange County district attorney´s office put up "vigorous objection and arguments" to the release of former teacher Alan Thomas Rigby, 66, who has been at Coalinga State Hospital for 16 years. He was committed there after serving half of a 19-year prison sentence, according to prosecutors. At a hearing Thursday morning, a judge found that there is nothing suggesting Rigby is likely to engage in sexually violent predatory criminal behavior upon his

Fresno, Calif. — A California wind farm will become the first in the nation to avoid prosecution if eagles are injured or die when they run into the giant turning blades, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Thursday. The Shiloh IV Wind Project LLC, 60 miles east of San Francisco, will receive a special permit allowing up to five golden eagles to be accidentally killed, harmed or disturbed over five years. Previously, such a violation could potentially draw criminal charges and discourage private investment in wind farms known for catching birds in their rotors. Sure, the EPA´s new pollution rules will raise the cost of electricity, forcing many Americans to use less of it. But don´t think of it as a price hike. "It´s actually about providing (Americans) more opportunities to reduce waste," EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy told Congress on Wednesday. Under the EPA´s demand-reduction scenario, Americans can retrofit their homes and buy more energy-efficient appliances, she said. This, in turn, will create jobs in government-approved industries. The sweeping EPA plan announced earlier this month sets carbon-reduction targets for each state, then allows states to decide how to meet those targets,

But it now lies in the territory claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (Isis), prompting fears that its stone statues could be destroyed as idolatrous images by the militants. An American driver is facing a $48,000 fine after using a mobile signal jammer in his car to block motorists around him from using their phones on the road. Jason Humphreys reportedly used the jammer from the back seat of his Toyota Highlander for around two years before being caught by Florida police. The 60-year-old said that he used the jammer – which transmits radio signals that interfere with mobile phones – because he was ‘fed up’ with watching others use their phones on the road. Although it’s not illegal to make a phone call while driving in Florida, motorists are

With a surprisingly wide margin of victory, Congressman James Lankford won the Oklahoma Republican U.S. Senate primary, defeating former Speaker of the State House of Representatives T.W. Shannon by 23 points and avoiding a runoff election. Lankford now becomes the prohibitive favorite to replace outgoing Senator Tom Coburn, who is retiring with two years remaining in his current term. This was a very different race from the one taking place in Mississippi. Despite negative ads run against Lankford by conservative groups, the Oklahoma contest was not an example of an “establishment” Republican or RINO versus a Tea Party candidate. In

Thad Cochran’s political resurrection began with a campaign shakeup and ended with a Hail Mary television ad. Just three weeks ago, in the dead of night on June 3, the Mississippi senator’s staff sat shaken and dejected, crestfallen at the results of a primary that deprived the six-term incumbent of an electoral majority. With Cochran forced into a runoff fight against an aggressive and energetic challenger, a dark mood shadowed his backers in Washington and Mississippi.Yet almost immediately, the Cochran coalition began bouncing back. Even on that gloomy night of June 3, Cochran adviser Stuart Stevens was insisting to staffers: “We’re

President Obama is now reaching terminal velocity, like a skydiver plunging toward earth. Except he doesn’t have a parachute. There’s a mighty splat coming soon. With his approval rating at 40 percent, down 6 points from early June, and just 29 percent of Americans convinced the country is on the “right track,” the president is doubling down on his strategy of blaming Republicans for his failures. And he’s shifting into hyperpartisan drive, traveling the country to campaign for Democrats, many of whom wish he’d just stay away. Eventually, she lost her case. At one point Lerner even asked a targeted conservative if Pat Robertson prayed over him. (Sound familiar?) In 1996, while at the FEC, Lois Lerner harassed Republican Senate candidate Al Salvi and made him this outrageous offer, “Promise me you will never run for office again, and

Ordinarily, President Obama’s days are planned out to the smallest detail. But for his two-day excursion to Minnesota this week, the president boasted that he’s got little in the way of a formal agenda, has few firm plans, and warned Secret Service that he’s feeling “super loose” and could end up doing any number of things. “I don’t know. Republicans are in the strongest position to win back the Senate since losing it eight years ago. Over several months, the party has expanded its range of targeted seats, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has helped defeat insurgents it didn’t want representing the GOP in the midterm elections. This sober realization came to Democrats on Wednesday, as Tuesday night’s primary results showed they cannot count on Tea Party candidates upsetting more-electable incumbents. And Democrats are increasingly realizing that President Obama’s approval rating will probably remain mired at 45 percent or lower until

National conservative groups are angry after incumbent Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran pulled off a victory in the state’s GOP run-off — likely because of his campaign’s outreach to Democratic voters. “It’s disgraceful that self-described GOP leaders like Mitch McConnell, John McCain, the Chamber of Commerce and the NRSC would champion a campaign platform of pork barrel spending and insider deal-making, while recruiting Democrats to show up at the polls,” Matt Kibbe of FreedomWorks said after the results came in. Tuesday’s closely-watched run-off came after conservative state Sen. Chris McDaniel edged Cochran in votes in the initial election earlier this month.
