Is the politics of gun violence pushing
gunmakers out of liberal Northeast?

Christian Science Monitor, by Patrik Jonsson

ATLANTA - After being targeted for regulation by lawmakers in liberal states, the country’s premier gunmakers are making quiet but bold calculations to move some of their operations out of New England’s “Gun Valley” and into states they believe will appreciate them more. (Snip) That clash between gunmakers and lawmakers undergirds a massive recalibration of arms manufacturing in the US, with companies like Beretta, Ruger, Remington, Mossberg, Stag Arms, and Magpul making plans to downsize their presence in states that are perceived as unfriendly, while building state-of-the art plants in regions and states with lower labor costs, bigger tax incentives,

Hey Patrik, try this quiz:

You´re going to be taxed for every word that is published. How long would you stick around for that?

I truly feel sorry for those who work in the gun industry living in that area. It´s USUALLY not their fault that their governments are so, so, stupid.

Now, noodle this one: are gun-control laws in the Northeast working where law-abiding citizens are required to register or sell or surrender firearms? (Hint: nope.)

In NH Ruger is treading water. Sig Sauer has just expanded to Newington´s Pease Tradeport, moving their offices and expanding manufacturing.

I heartily endorse moving to gun friendly states, but some moves are just to consolidate manufacturing plants. If a state´s resident can´t buy what the manufacturer makes, why make that product in that state?

A Fourth of July parade float that depicted a figure standing outside an outhouse labeled the “Obama Presidential Library” has created a stir on social media and is also receiving criticism in Norfolk, Nebraska. (Snip) Neither the float nor the pickup identified a sponsor; a sign in the windshield said it was entry No. 29. Liz Guthrie of Pierce, Nebraska, took a photo of the float that has been widely circulated on social media and shared about 1,000 times on Facebook. From where she watched the parade, Guthrie said she could hear the crowd laughing and clapping as the float

Seattle — Randy Oliver has a pressing question as legal marijuana sales are about to begin in Washington state: Where´s all the weed? Oliver is the chief scientist at Analytical 360 in Yakima, the only lab that has been certified to test the heavily taxed marijuana that will wind up on store shelves next month. So far, just two licensed growers have turned in samples for testing, with another due to turn in a small batch next week, he told The Associated Press on Saturday. "There´s such a small stream of samples coming through," he said. "There's going to be some long lines and some high prices." The state's Liquor Control Board has been

When Do the Right Thing was released a quarter-century ago, few people could have imagined that the $6 million indie about racial tensions in America would one day be hailed as one of the great masterpieces of our time -- by the first black president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the first black president of the United States, no less. But that is precisely what happened on Friday night. In front of an overflowing crowd on the campus of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the film's writer-director-star Spike Lee signed books, attended a reception and then participated in a Q&A about the film -- introduced by

“The View” is secretly one of the most important political series of the 2000s, one that, at its peak, put forceful opposing opinions about the biggest issues of the day in front of viewers. The famous Rosie O’Donnell-Elisabeth Hasselbeck fight that prompted O’Donnell’s departure was about civilian casualties in the Iraq War — and the fact that neither O’Donnell nor Hasselbeck argued her case particularly clearly was part of the personality of the show. The show’s hosts discussed hot-button issues, and interviewed politicians, in a strikingly colloquial manner, one that seemed to update the genteel chumminess of executive producer Barbara

The economy contracted dramatically in the first quarter of 2014, according to re-revised data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The federal department´s initial assessment of Q1 2014 was that the nation´s economic activity had expanded slightly. After getting more data, it revised that estimate to a 1 percent contraction. The third estimate, however, is much more severe: the economy contracted 2.9 percent. But this probably won´t cause President Obama to lose too much sleep. Wonkblog´s Yian Mui walked through the qualifiers on the number: "It was really cold during the winter. Hiring picked up dramatically as spring grew closer.

The U.S. economy turned in its worst quarter in five years during the first three months of 2014, shrinking more sharply than previously estimated. The nation´s gross domestic product in the first quarter fell at a 2.9% annual rate vs. the 1% contraction previously believed, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg expected a 1.8% drop in output. The decline was the sharpest since growth tumbled 5.4% in the first quarter of 2009 during the Great Recession. The last time the economy shrank was in the first quarter of 2011, slipping 1.3%. The more dramatic drop was largely

With ISIS forces nearing Baghdad´s city limits, U.S. officials don´t believe the relatively small, ill-equipped army of Islamic militants will be able to take the city by a frontal assault. Instead, they fear that ISIS will terrorize Baghdad by launching a wave of suicide bombings and possibly cutting off water and electricity to the city of 7.5 million. The strategy, according to the officials, appears aimed at demoralizing residents of the city and inciting a new wave of sectarian violence that could further undermine the ruling Shia-led Iraqi government. Los Angeles - The Islamic extremists who have seized swathes of Iraq could destabilise the entire region and threaten the United States, President Barack Obama has warned. The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis) could spread conflict to neighbouring states and pose a “medium and long-term threat” to the US, Obama said in an interview aired on Sunday. "We´re going to have to be vigilant generally,” Obama said. “Right now the problem with Isis is the fact that they´re destabilising the country. That could spill over into some of our allies like Jordan." Secretary of state John Kerry,

After morning prayers on Saturday, she sent off her husband and eldest son to join a military parade by the Mahdi Army, a Shiite militia run by the populist cleric Moktada al-Sadr. Then she phoned her girlfriends and told them to come watch the parade wearing white shrouds draped over their black chadors, as a sign that they, too, the women of the Mahdi Army, were ready for martyrdom. “Yes, we are women,” said Umm Saif, a nickname meaning “mother of Saif,” giggling from behind her black face cover. “But don’t be mistaken. A charter plane believed to be carrying immigrants arrived this evening at San Diego’s Lindbergh Field, apparently from Texas. Three Homeland Security buses arrived a few minutes later, trailed by numerous law enforcement vehicles. There is no information as to the buses´ destination. Earlier this week, federal officials said that 140 immigrants who had been detained crossing the border in Texas would arrive Friday. But since the blockade by protesters Tuesday at Murrieta, officials have declined to provide information about the movement of the immigrants.

The Obamas have spent over 44 million dollars in taxpayer money on travel and vacations. Some are even calling him the “most well-trvaeled, expensive” president in our nation’s history. President Obama has quietly promised Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren complete support if she runs for president — a stinging rebuke to his nemesis Hillary Clinton, sources tell me. Publicly, Obama has remained noncommittal on the 2016 race, but privately he worries that Clinton would undo and undermine many of his policies. There’s also a personal animosity, especially with Bill Clinton, that dates from their tough race six years ago. A former Harvard law professor and administration aide, Warren would energize the left wing of the Democrat Party just as Obama did against Clinton in 2008.
