Legendary author Maya Angelou dies

Maya Angelou, a renowned poet, novelist and actress whose work defied description under a simple label, has died, her literary agent, Helen Brann, said Wednesday. She died at her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Brann said. A professor, singer and dancer, Angelou´s work spans several professions. In 2011, President Barack Obama awarded her with the Medal of Freedom, the country´s highest civilian honor. She spent her early years studying dance and drama in San Francisco, but dropped out at age 14, instead becoming the city´s first African-American female cable car conductor. Angelou later returned to high school to finish her

After reading her obit, I have respect for her. She had a hard life in her early years (abandoned by her parents, reared by her grandmother, raped by her mother´s boyfriend at seven years old) but worked hard as a young woman (worked multiple jobs and became the first black cable-car conductor in San Francisco). After all that, she made something of herself which in itself is admirable.

May she rest in peace.

For those who don´t know the genesis of her writing, FTA:

"The famous poet got into writing after a childhood tragedy that stunned her into silence for years. When she was 7, her mother´s boyfriend raped her. He was later beaten to death by a mob after she testified against him.
"My 7-and-a-half-year-old logic deduced that my voice had killed him, so I stopped speaking for almost six years," she said. From the silence, a louder voice was born. "

I appreciate the fact that she overcame huge obstacles in her life and went on to learn multiple languages and work overseas; I am not so enamored of her writing (most of it) but can respect her for her real accomplishments.

But, RIP, Maya. You pulled it off.

I read the NYT obituary. They said critics called her prose "facile and solipsistic." I was shocked that they offered criticism of Ms. Angelou´s literary talents, which is echoed by most posters above. Of course she was another media creation, like Obama, revered because she was black and from an impoverished background (although Obama was from an affluent family...which goes generally unreported.)

Interestingly, the moderated comments in the NYT did not include even one critical comment regarding Ms. Angelou´s literary accomplishments. Obviously, when a media proclaimed literary genius dies, every one agrees! Liberals seem to live in this filtered, rarefied, world where their icons can be nothing but superlative.

Ms. Angelou seemed like a lovely woman, and she led a very interesting life, but as I read in another obituary, Billie Holiday said upon hearing her sing, "Maya will a be famous but not or her ability to sing." Yes, Ms. Angelou, was, indeed, famous as promoted by the media, but not for her literary abilities. Rest in peace. I am sure she needs it after experiencing 15 minutes of fame that seem to last more than a generation.

Friday on "Democracy Now," Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL) attacked his "shameful" Republican colleagues for wanting to change the 2008 child trafficking law so that the children from from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador current streaming across the border in hopes of evading deportation will be treated the same as those from Mexico before approving the $3.7 billion in emergency funding the president has requested. The Illinois Democrat said, "I think it is shameful that in the Congress of the U.S. we see members of Congress engendering and creating fear of children. We should be protecting children, not creating fear of them." Yesterday,

The “ugly American” has gotten a lot uglier over the past few weeks, from the streets of California to the halls of Congress and state houses around the country. A growing number of our fellow Americans have taken on grotesque features, in looks and sounds, in reaction to the thousands of children from Central America who have crossed our borders as they flee poverty and violence in hope for something better. Sadly, the arrival of these youngsters has been greeted by flag-waving, sign-carrying, Bible-thumping and Constitution-quoting citizens demanding that they not be received here and that they be returned immediately to their

Inquiring minds wonder if there’s a “G” in the grading repertoire. And that does not stand for “good.” Pollster John Zogby has given President Obama an “F” this week for the White House performance on the global stage, and the researcher has no imminent good news for the president. “Some people have really bad weeks. Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff got an ‘F’ after the nation’s soccer team lost to Germany. But President Obama’s week was just as bad,” Mr. Zogby says. “Israel and the Palestinians are at war again. The president should have visited the U.S.-Mexican border, where so many immigrant children are in danger and so many

On July 16, comic character Archie Andrews, of Life With Archie, will die after being shot while protecting gay friend Kevin Keller. Keller is "Archie Comics´ first openly gay character." According to the Associated Press, Keller is "a married military veteran and newly elected senator who´s pushing for more gun control in Riverdale after his husband was involved in a shooting." Archie Comics´ publisher and co-CEO Jon Goldwater said the way in which Archie will die was carefully chosen. While he could have been killed saving "Betty" or saving "Veronica," doing so for Keller was something "that would really resonate
