Duck commander Phil Robertson

Many are ready to stride on stage at the three-day Republican Leadership Conference, which begins Thursday in New Orleans. There’s a new entry on the roster, though: the plainspoken “Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson, simply billed as “patriarch of the Robertson family” by the organizers of the event. There are other luminaries scheduled. Among them: Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Ted Cruz of Texas - who will lead a prayer breakfast - plus Reps. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Govs. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Rick Perry of Texas, Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus, Donald

A lineup like that is enough to make a liberal froth at the mouth.

Parents of slain Bartlett soldier

(Video) The parents of a local soldier who they say was killed while searching for missing U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl demanded an investigation into whether Bergdahl deserted and how his release was engineered. Private Matthew Martinek, 20, of Bartlett, was killed on patrol in Afghanistan in September 2009 when his unit was hit by a roadside bomb and attacked with a rocket-propelled grenade and gunfire, the military said. Martinek’s mother, Cheryl Brandes, and step-father, Ken Luccioni, said members of their son’s unit in the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment based in Alaska have told them that Martinek was on a

Bowe Bergdahl remained in a U.S. military hospital in Germany Wednesday night. In the meantime, we´ve learned more about his service record in Afghanistan, in the months before he was captured. When he was captured, Bergdahl had less than a year of military service and his official performance record was without blemish. But an internal military investigation conducted after his 2009 disappearance found that he had wandered off post without permission at least once before. Yet his unit members failed to report it. Fellow soldiers told investigators that Bergdahl had talked about wanting to explore Afghanistan, and exhibited behavior that

PROVIDENCE — Two conservative organizations in Washington have filed complaints with the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Ethics, charging that Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse has unlawfully exerted pressure on the Internal Revenue Service to investigate whether nonprofit conservative groups have engaged unlawfully in partisan politics. The Center for Competitive Politics asked that the panel look into actions by Whitehouse and eight other senators, who the group said had sought such probes and interfered with IRS adjudications of nonprofit tax status. The Tea Party Patriots asked the Select Committee on Ethics to “investigate whether Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., violated Senate rules by

WASHINGTON— President Barack Obama´s goal of closing the Guantanamo Bay prison is facing re-energized opposition from Republicans and increased questioning from fellow Democrats amid widespread anger in Congress over the swap of five Taliban detainees for the last American prisoner of war in Afghanistan.Obama appeared to advance his effort last month when a Senate panel approved greater authority for him to transfer suspected terrorists to the United States, on condition he presented a plan to close Guantanamo and Congress approved it. But the deal that freed Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl after five years of captivity has driven a new wedge between

Senators said Wednesday they still have a lot of questions after attending a classified White House briefing about the prisoner exchange with the Taliban to secure the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. Officials from the State Department, Pentagon and intelligence agencies briefed the lawmakers in an attempt to ease the mounting criticism surrounding the deal to free Bergdahl, who was held in captivity by the Taliban for five years. However, many said the briefing did little to quell their concerns, with Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., saying he left the briefing with more questions than answers. Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss agreed.

The controversy surrounding President Obama´s efforts to free Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl has rattled the country, as fellow soldiers insist Bergdahl deserted and their lives were put on the line to find him. Those who have not spoken-- who cannot speak-- are the six soldiers who ultimately gave their lives in the search for Bergdahl. The six men who died--Staff Sergeant Clayton Bowen, Staff Sgt. Kurt Curtiss, 2nd Lt. Darryn Andrews, Pfc. Morris Walker, Staff Sergeant Michael Murphrey, and Pfc. Matthew Michael Martinek--were part of the same command unit as Bergdahl and died on missions related to his search. Bowen and Walker

It wasn´t hard to spot Bill Cosby at Lewis Katz´s memorial today. The famous comedian was one of nearly 1,400 mourners who gathered at the Temple Performing Arts Center for an emotional memorial service honoring the philanthropist and Philadelphia Inquirer co-owner, and in the sea of black clothing, Cosby stood out wearing his bright burgundy Temple sweats. His informal attire was to pay respects to his close friend and fellow Temple alum, who died after his private jet crashed during takeoff in Bedford, Mass. late Saturday night. Establishment Republicans are in a tough spot in Mississippi. They want Thad Cochran to win the coming runoff, and could spend tons of cash to attack tea-party challenger Chris McDaniel. But they know the sitting senator is more likely to lose, and going after his opponent will only damage the party´s ability to beat the Democratic candidate and take over the Senate. It´s an excruciating decision for all of Cochran´s supporters, from the National Republican Senatorial Committee to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. And even though they´re reiterating their support, it already looks like they are ready to scale back,

When Bob Bergdahl launched in Arabic, invoking Allah while standing next to President Obama in the White House Rose Garden, a number of Americans were startled. (snip) I am not knowledgeable enough to judge the claim of sanctifying the White House and claiming it for Islam, but I place a lot of stick in watching nonverbal cues, people’s quick reactions. And so, when our friends at iOwnTheWorld.com captured and enlarged President Obama’s reaction to Bergdahl’s invocation of Allah, it hit me hard. Susan Rice has done it again. Defending the deal that freed Sgt Bowe Bergdahl from the Taliban, the national security adviser declared that Bergdahl had "served the United States with honour and distinction". [Snip] In the US military, walking off post isn´t regarded positively. Moreover, as I noted yesterday, Bergdahl´s unit--1st Battalion, the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment--lost seven men during its 2009-10 deployment. Parachute units like the 501st take great pride in their elite status within the military. He said that the White House expected criticism of the decision to release five Taliban in exchange for Bergdahl, but they also expected “euphoria” over the release of the last American soldier held captive in Afghanistan. “What’s been interesting, Andrea, what’s cost the White House off guard here, they were expecting Gitmo criticisms of the detainees that were chosen,” Todd said. “They did not expect this

Five years ago, I publicly raised questions about Bowe Bergdahl’s desertion from Blackfoot Company, 1-501 Infantry (Airborne), 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division. A few weeks after his so-called “capture” in late June 2009, three conflicting accounts had surfaced: U.S. officials told the Associated Press Bergdahl had “walked off” the base with three Afghans; the Taliban claimed on its website that “a drunken American soldier had come out of his garrison” and into their arms; and Bergdahl claimed in his Taliban “hostage video” that he had “lagged behind a patrol” before being captured. Des Moines, IA - State Sen. Joni Ernst has won the Republican primary for an Iowa U.S. Senate seat held for 30 years by retiring Democrat Tom Harkin. The 43-year-old Ernst won the nomination over five candidates. She´ll face Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley in the November general election. All the Republicans seeking the nomination described themselves as deeply conservative, but Ernst managed to stand out in part due to two television ads. One featured her on a farm, talking about her experience castrating hogs, and the other showed her firing a handgun. Ernst also received endorsements from a variety of groups and individuals,

From the moment the father of Bowe Bergdahl took the stage with President Barack Obama, it was clear the Bergdahls were not an average US military family. Sporting a long, bushy beard that he refused to trim since his son went missing in 2009, Bob Bergdahl spoke Pashto, Afghanistan´s main language, and also a few words of Arabic at the White House press conference announcing his son´s release. Some critics of the deal to free the only remaining American prisoner of war have shifted their attention to Mr Bergdahl and his controversial statements. Just a few days before his son

President Obama betrayed the highest obligation of his office — safeguarding national security — in trading five hard-core Taliban for the American serviceman who appears to have deserted in Afghanistan. The five sworn enemies of the United States are now in the Gulf state of Qatar, where they are free to come and go as they like, beyond the watch of American agents. In just one year, they will be free to return to Afghanistan to fight there and stage terror attacks far beyond that country’s borders.

Bill Clinton´s critics in Arkansas used to say that he would rather climb a tree and tell a lie than stand on the ground and tell the truth. In other words, Clinton would lie when the truth would do -- and when telling the truth would be easier. The saying might apply to the Obama administration´s public statements about Bowe Bergdahl, the U.S. soldier released from captivity in Afghanistan in a trade for five Taliban commanders held at Guantanamo Bay. There is substantial evidence to suggest that Bergdahl abandoned his post in 2009 -- he went AWOL, he deserted, whatever

Acting as commander-in-chief, President Obama exchanged five terrorist leaders for U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. The rationale was that the United States leaves no soldier behind on the battlefield or in enemy hands. That is half of the equation. The disconcerting other half is that Bergdahl may have left behind his own unit and gone over to the enemy. In 2009, then Pvt. Bergdahl (automatically promoted in absentia to the rank of sergeant) left his frontline unit under the cover of darkness. Soon after, the Taliban reported him in their custody. For weeks, thousands of American soldiers risked their lives to
