Mail Found Dumped in North Park
Trash, Inspector General Investigating

The U.S. Postal Service says it is investigating how hundreds of pieces of mail ended up in the trash last week. "The whole neighborhood´s mail was in the dumpster," including scores of city sticker renewal notices and "a lot of private mail," said Samuel Tenenbaum of the 60659 ZIP code, who made the discovery on Thursday.(Snip)"No explanation was given, no apologies. They were nasty, giving attitude." The postal employees "asked us to go away," he said. "They said we weren´t allowed to take any pictures," an order neighbors ignored.

I read a story a couple weeks ago about the awful mail delivery in Chicago. One law firm was virtually paralyzed because mail involving legal issues had never been delivered. Last I heard they were sending employees to the post office to pick-up the mail twice/day.

While we are talking about the Post Office - my husband writes prescriptions for controlled substances for patients who have to take these medications on a long-term basis. Because there are no refills or call-ins on controlled substance Rx´s, we customarily mail an actual prescription written on a special form to our patients once a month. (This is perfectly legal, by the way.)

Lately we have noticed that the Post Office will sometimes refuse to deliver mail to certain addresses. A few years ago, this was never a problem. Now it is becoming more and more common. When we mail these prescriptions out, often as not they go undelivered. The affected patients have to figure out some other address to which the mailman will deliver mail so that they can get their monthly prescriptions.

You might speculate that somebody is intercepting and filling these prescriptions for themselves. This is not happening, as far as we know. As soon as a prescription goes missing, we report the control number to the state so that prescription cannot be filled, and to our knowledge, nobody has ever tried to do so. The Post Office is just that lazy, self important and uncaring.

Several years back, we had a postal carrier who was so lazy (and overweight) who refused to come to our door when requiring a signature for a piece of mail. Instead, she would pull up and honk the horn.

Needless to say I complained not only to our local post office, but fired off a lengthy email to the postmaster general. I was surprised when I received a reply.

I worked briefly for the US Postal service long ago. It was Christmas time and very busy. Workers would toss packages marked "fragile" into the truck. As a new guy, I was given the hardest routes that would take all day, while the carriers with seniority had the easiest routes. They would be done by early afternoon, and spend the rest of the day in the bar, I heard, then come in to clock out. I was out until dark, because with junk mail, you had to go to every house, instead of maybe one in three. They were government workers, in a union, and didn´t care in the least about doing a good job. Government should never be in charge of anything.

It is long past time the USPS is closed down and the entire system contracted out. The companies that take the contracts can hire the good ones from the postal service and the bums can go on welfare.

Chicago is calling for a six-month moratorium on conversions of single-room occupancy hotels and residential hotels while it tries to figures out how to regulate the gentrification that has put thousands of very-low-income housing units at risk. An ordinance that would prohibit for six months the issuance of any city building permits for the demolition or conversion of the buildings is expected to be introduced at Wednesday’s City Council meeting by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and several aldermen. The moratorium would prevent almost all conversion projects, whether it was to a residential, non-residential, commercial or industrial use.

Former Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner writes in his memoir, released Monday, that Illinois Republican Mark Kirk was “delusional” in warning the Chinese not to buy U.S. debt — but a source who was actually at that meeting Kirk had with Chinese officials told me that Geithner, who was not present, got it wrong. Kirk’s long-held view is that Geithner — along with a host of administration officials up to President Barack Obama and many members of Congress — is crazy not to be more concerned about runaway U.S. spending.
