Donetsk, Ukraine - Ukraine´s president-elect said Monday he wants to begin talks with Moscow and end a pro-Russia insurgency in the east, but the rebels escalated the conflict by occupying a major airport, and the government in Kiev responded with an airstrike. (Snip) The rebels, who declared independence for Donetsk and the neighboring Luhansk region after a hastily called and dubious referendum two weeks ago, regarded Sunday´s election of candy tycoon Petro Poroshenko as president to be illegitimate. In a victory speech, the billionaire promised to open a dialogue with residents of eastern Ukraine and to guarantee their rights.

Comments:
Wars can start over some pushing and shoving. Putin´s going to want more than the Crimea, especially with 0bama still in the White House.

Even the beltway-centric National Journal concedes that former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is right about the double standard in the mainstream media´s coverage of women. (Snip) After Palin blistered and mocked liberals and the mainstream press for coddling Hillary Clinton last week, Emma Roller noted in National Journal, "nearly every reporter covering the 2008 campaign bought into" the narrative of Palin as "a clueless bimbo." The press characterized Palin in this way even though Palin arguably accomplished more in her time as Alaska´s governor than nearly every major GOP presidential candidate during the last election cycle and

The Internal Revenue Service ruled it will impose a tax penalty on employers of up to $36,500 per worker for dumping employees into the Obamacare exchanges. The New York Times, which broke the story, reports: When employers provide coverage, their contributions, averaging more than $5,000 a year per employee, are not counted as taxable income to workers. But the Internal Revenue Service said employers could not meet their obligations under the health care law by simply reimbursing employees for some or all of their premium costs. The IRS ruling is an effort by the Obama administration to stop employers with 50 or

Berlin - German Chancellor Angela Merkel says the rise of right-wing populists in the weekend´s European elections is "remarkable and regrettable." She says the best answer is to focus on policies that create jobs and improve competitiveness. In one of the most prominent upsets, the far-right National Front topped polling in neighboring France. Merkel said in Berlin on Monday that it´s important to win back voters – and "that goes for France, too." She added, "A course directed toward competitiveness, growth, and jobs is the best response to those who are disappointed and have now voted the way we all didn't want."

Sydney - Analysis of the final ping transmission between Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 and an Inmarsat PLC satellite found the missing jetliner was likely descending after running out of fuel, according to Australian air-accident investigators. Investigators remain confident Flight 370 crashed into a remote stretch of the southern Indian Ocean within around 25 nautical miles of the final ping transmission, despite an initial underwater search and lengthy air-and-sea hunt for floating debris failing to find any trace of the plane. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said its conclusion about the plane´s likely location relied on calculations of how long

Dallas, TX - Texas conservatives are hoping to win two major Republican run-off elections on Tuesday, for lieutenant governor and attorney general, underscoring the Tea Party´s enduring influence in the state. Those two races were left undecided after no single candidate crossed the 50 percent threshold in the March 4 Republican primary, setting the stage for what has been a bruising run-off election between establishment candidates and conservative challengers who have the backing of both the Tea Party movement and its Texas star, Senator Ted Cruz. The winner of Tuesday´s run-offs will go on to face a Democrat in the November

A prolific computer hacker who infiltrated the servers of major corporations later switched sides and helped the government disrupt hundreds of cyberattacks on Congress, NASA and other sensitive targets, according to federal prosecutors. New York prosecutors detailed the cooperation of Hector Xavier Monsegur for the first time in court papers while asking a judge to reward him with leniency at his sentencing Tuesday. They credited Monsegur with helping them cripple Anonymous, the notorious crew of hacktivists who stole confidential information, defaced websites and temporarily put some victims out of business.

Disputes between unions and employers over paying for new costs associated with the Affordable Care Act are roiling labor talks nationwide. Unions and employers are tussling over who will pick up the tab for new mandates, such as coverage for dependent children to age 26, as well as future costs, such as a tax on premium health plans starting in 2018. The question is poised to become a significant point of tension as tens of thousands of labor contracts covering millions of workers expire in the next several years, with ACA-related cost increases ranging from 5 percent to 12.5 percent in current talks. One government agency has decided that the results of employee ratings are too discriminatory, and eliminated the process entirely. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced on Monday that it will now award all employees the highest rating regardless of performance reviews. The CFPB, which oversees transactions in the financial sector for the federal government, decided to no longer conduct employee reviews because there were just too many apparent “significant disparities” between the races, ages, and locations of its employees. White House officials are warning that First Lady Michelle Obama is launching into a new "sustained level" of political engagement this year, signaling a shift from her less public profile during the beginning of her husband´s first term in the White House. As Barack´s second term has gotten fairly underway, the White House claims that the President will be using his wife in more ways than ever and we should expect to see her acting as a solo political act far more than we have in the past. President Barack Obama made a surprise visit to U.S. troops in Afghanistan, promising an end to combat missions in Afghanistan by the close of the year and help easing veterans back into civilian life following their return to the States. Obama pledged a commitment to limited troop presence beyond 2014 in Afghanistan, which is undergoing a presidential transition, to safeguard the gains made against al Qaeda by American troops. He then name-checked the just-opened 9/11 Museum at Ground Zero, describing a flag from that day that had survived the attacks to maintain its patriotic symbolism, much as the troops he
