Beirut, Lebanon — Lebanese security forces on Sunday arrested a radical Islamic cleric who was long prominent in Britain and was wanted here under a new security plan to curb violence in the northern city of Tripoli that has been exacerbated by the war in neighboring Syria. The cleric, Omar Bakri Muhammad, was arrested in the town of Aley, (Snip) Lebanese authorities viewed him with increasing concern after he expressed support for an extremist group that has taken over parts of northern Syria, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, and called for it to activate cells in Lebanon. He has denied ties to Al Qaeda, but has called for the group’s flag

Comments:
There will be no winners, only losers in the Syrian Civil War. One group of terrorists are fighting Al Qaeda to control the country, while the "rebels" kill each other for command of forces. That´s the good news. Arresting this animal who was previously allowed to try to foment anarchy in Britain is another "win."

The State Department’s Counter Terrorism (CT) Bureau promoted on Friday a controversial Muslim scholar whose organization has reportedly backed Hamas and endorsed a fatwa authorizing the murder of U.S. soldiers in Iraq. The CT bureau on Friday tweeted out a link to the official website of Sheikh Abdallah Bin Bayyah, the vice president of the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS), a controversial organization founded by a Muslim Brotherhood leader “who has called for the death of Jews and Americans and himself is banned from visiting the U.S.,” according to Fox News. Kabul - Afghanistan on Sunday expressed anger at the United States for allegedly monitoring almost all the country´s telephone conversations after revelations by the Wikileaks website. Wikileaks editor Julian Assange said on Friday that Afghanistan was one of at least two countries where the US National Security Agency "has been recording and storing nearly all the domestic (and international) phone calls". The Afghan government responded to the claims by ordering the interior and telecommunication ministries to stop illegal monitoring of calls, and said it would lodge a complaint with the US. Bagram, Afghanistan - Afghan President Hamid Karzai was offered a meeting with President Barack Obama at Bagram Air Base outside Kabul but declined, a US official said Sunday. The official said that Washington was not surprised that the meeting did not work out at short notice, after Obama arrived at the base on a surprise visit after night fell on Sunday. "As we said, we weren´t planning for a bilateral meeting with President Karzai or a trip to the palace, as this trip is focused on thanking our troops," the official said. "We did offer him the opportunity to come to Bagram, but we're not surprised that it didn't work on short notice.

Kiev & Donetsk, Ukraine - Billionaire Petro Poroshenko claimed Ukraine´s presidency on Sunday after exit polls gave him an absolute majority in a first round of voting and, vowing to end a conflict with pro-Russian rebels, he pledged to align his country with Europe. Exit polls gave Poroshenko, a confectionery magnate with long experience in government, more than 55 percent of the vote, well ahead of former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko in second place with just over 12 percent. If confirmed by results on Monday, there will be no need for a runoff vote on June 15. Ukrainians, weary of six months of political turmoil,

Detroit women are turning to abortion at a staggering rate as poverty and crime grip the city, with more than one-third of pregnancies being terminated. According to 2012 figures, the most recent year for which data are available, 31 percent of pregnancies among Detroit residents ended in abortion — compared to about 14 percent for all of Michigan, The Detroit News reported. (Snip) Dr. Susan Schooley, chairwoman of the Department of Family Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital, said the statistics make Detroit look “more like some Third-World country than someplace in the United States.”

John Wayne vs. John Wayne

We’re in the midst of a John Wayne moment, pilgrims. (Snip) You could argue we’ve been in a John Wayne moment ever since his first, star-making closeup in 1939’s Stagecoach. But he also remains a polarizing figure. If you belong to an older, less-diverse generation, you probably revere The Duke. If you’re younger, or not white, there’s a good chance his cowboy swagger and outspoken, old-fashioned conservatism stand for everything you hate. Public Enemy’s indelible takedown of Wayne and Elvis Presley in the 1989 hit “Fight the Power” still reverberates. Even if he fashioned himself as an outsider, Wayne stands for the power.

Weapons, militants and Haftar: Recipe

Armed, bloody clashes among militants have characterised the political scene in Libya for almost three years: fighting and killing aren´t news anymore. Open conflict rose to the surface after the removal of long-time dictator Muammar Gaddafi from power in the 2011 uprising, with armed rebels refusing to unite under the umbrella of a national army functioning within the bounds of state authority. Yet the bitter fighting that erupted last week between forces loyal to retired General Khalifa Haftar and Islamist militants signaled a new low in the politico-security mess. A hint on Haftar - In most news outlets around the world, the actions, moves

Another hospital system wants to buy another health insurance company, and consumers may well wonder what this trend could mean for them. (Snip) By acting in cooperation, a unified organization might be able to better design incentives for higher-quality care. Or, by combining similar functions like human resources or tech support, the organization might cut costs. A joint provider-insurer may also be better able to adapt to — and make more money from — new Medicare payment models in the Affordable Care Act. Eventually, an organization that combines the functions of health care provision and health care insurance might have

The Department for Education (DfE) has urged schools to be vigilant in guarding against the dangers of female genital mutilation ahead of the summer holidays, known to be a particularly dangerous time for at-risk girls. The department has sent out an email to all schools in England and Wales drawing attention to updated guidelines designed to keep girls safe before the start of the summer break, sometimes referred to as the "cutting season" for girls at risk of mutilation. Michael Gove previously wrote to all headteachers advising them of the dangers of the practice, which involves the removal of a girl's outer sexual organs and can lead to lifelong

ASHINGTON — White House officials have been holding private meetings this week aimed at soothing lawmakers’ concerns over the U.S. posture in Syria, the future of the American military presence in Afghanistan and defense spending. The meetings come as a frustrated White House seeks to push back at criticism of President Barack Obama’s foreign policy. But the White House outreach appeared to be having little effect on some lawmakers’ concerns. Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, described Tuesday night’s White House meeting with chief of staff Denis McDonough and national security adviser Susan

What a society chooses to memorialize says a lot about what it values, which is worth contemplating this weekend as the nation recognizes the sacrifices of military men and women who died in service to their country. It even informs the vocabulary of our political life, where "war chests" finance "campaigns" by "foot soldiers" in "battleground" states directed by top "lieutenants." They had a dream. For almost a hundred years now, the famed academic-artistic-and-punditry industrial complex has dreamed of a government run by their kind of people (i.e., nature’s noblemen), whose intelligence, wit, and refined sensibilities would bring us a heaven on earth. Their keen intellects would cut through the clutter as mere mortals’ couldn’t. They would lift up the wretched, oppressed by cruel forces. Above all, they would counter the greed of the merchants, the limited views of the business community, and the ignorance of the conformist and dim middle class.

President Barack Obama secretly slipped into Afghanistan under the cover of darkness Sunday for a weekend visit with U.S. troops serving in the closing months of America´s longest war. White House officials are warning that First Lady Michelle Obama is launching into a new "sustained level" of political engagement this year, signaling a shift from her less public profile during the beginning of her husband´s first term in the White House. As Barack´s second term has gotten fairly underway, the White House claims that the President will be using his wife in more ways than ever and we should expect to see her acting as a solo political act far more than we have in the past.
