Why Santa Barbara shootings
are not just about gun control

Christian Science Monitor, by Mark Sappenfield

The fingers are already pointing, the headlines already blaring. Once again, a young man, angry at the world, has ended his life in a hail of gunfire, taking with him innocent victims.(Snip)But to researchers who have studied the trend, these are secondary – though important – factors. The young men who are overwhelmingly responsible for these shooting sprees fit a very clear portrait: self-obsessed yet marginalized in some way. Their rampages are not fits of senseless rage, but cold, calculating attempts to level the score with society. In the attempt to become an antihero – to lay bare how they

Mass murder as theater. An excellent article that gets into the real reason for these mass killings.

Note: There is a little anonymous "survey" before the article fully opens. One question about gum. I said I didn´t chew it and bingo, the article opened fully. Worth getting past the annoyance.

Press needs to stop romanticizing these narcissistic freaks and treat them as societal infestations that need to be contained and eliminated.
Three ale victims stabbed to death - is this the result of wussiffication of American males?
Why didn´t they overwhelm the freak?

Yep, good article. It´s similar to what the guy from The Belmont Club was saying in his PJ Media article yesterday. People imagine themselves in their own movie.

Those who are saying it´s about gun control are very cruelly ignoring those brutally stabbed who made up half of the victims.

Amen #3. This is NOTHING to do with gun control!!!!

He killed more people with a knife and a car than he did with a gun. If he didn´t have a gun, he simply would have killed more people by other means. And he probably would have lived so that we would have had to put the families of his victims through a trial, and then have had the taxpayers pay to take care of him for the next 60 years or so.

Of course, if he had lived and gone to prison, I´m guessing staying a virgin wouldn´t have been a problem after his first night in prison. A pretty boy like that would have gotten all the sex he could have handled by the nice big prisoners...

Re #1, at one point he said or wrote that he planned to lure some of the bad guys to his apartment, one by one, and kill them.

It is also possible that he killed them while they slept.

He was a crafty guy. He managed it somehow. And he obviously didn´t take on all three at one time.

(hit submit too soon)

This article is really worth more than a cursory one graph read. His motivation was not that unusual. It has been studied, as have parents and family dynamics like his. They are not unfamiliar to those who are studying these killers.

The killings are to pay back people whom he believes have slighted him, humiliated him, ignored him, whatever - and to get attention. To make people notice him. That is apparently what these mass killings are usually about.

Ironically the wide publicity they engender is just what the narcissistic perp was hoping for. And what future copy-cats will aim for. But how to stop that?

The article is really quite good and warrants more than the usual drive-by kneejerk one liners...

We can read and think about these serious issues. And post constructive comments. And try to come up with practical solutions.

Or we can drag out the same old tired stuff about prison sex. Somehow that belongs in a saloon rather than Ms. Lucianne´s salon.

I don´t think l-dotters are overly callous but we are seasoned in the reality of senseless killings and sometimes gallows humor is the only way to cope. All the well meaning, caring discussion won´t bring anyone back to life and if keyboard earnestness worked, this world wouldn´t be in the mess it´s in.

We have wage a very successful war on young men for over a generation now. We drug them so they act like girls in class. We eliminate their sports to make room for more girl sports. We kick them out of school for drawing what might look like a gun. We ostracize them for being attracted to girls. We have effectively eleimintate their ability to grow up as men. And we wonder why they get neurotic and go on rampages. Maybe, just maybe if we let them be boys that grew to young men and finally men, they would feel trapped and desperate for gorified attention.

Those who seek to blame SSRIs may be looking at a symptom of a bigger issue, not the cause of the shootings. SSRIs are over prescribed. One reason is because other more intensive - and expensive- methods of treatment have been taken off the table. The common thread I see in many of these mass murder cases has been undiagnosed paranoid schizophrenia.

SSRIs make an easy villain. Many messed-up people take them. Does it occur to anyone that the messed-up condition predates the use of the SSRIs, and the drugs are part of an attempt to treat the condition?

In the 1990´s I was very suicidal because of an abusive work situation. Even after I left that job, the suicidality continued. SSRIs saved my life. They returned me to something I had forgotten - normal. I don´t take them any more, but I am very very grateful that they were there when I needed them.

You have to wonder how many mass shootings would occur if there weren’t saturating news headlines for weeks? Instead, we get a week of the gun control, more money for mental health, stop violent videos, and other nauseating drum beaters. Meanwhile, the parents who raised this monster are left alone to grieve.

I have another take because I´m not a mental health expert like some of you who have "diagnosed" the killer.

I ask, why do the liberals all want to talk about "gun control" instead of mental health? Every time the subject of forcibly medicating mentally ill folks, if necessary to protect the public, the leftists change the subject to "gun control".

Let´s face it -

1. Voluntary medication programs don´t work for the seriously mentally ill.

2. Many are begging for help in dealing with family members who are mentally ill!

3. Most mass murders who are not dead are being held for "evaluation" by mental health professionals or defended based on their mental illness.

4. Yet the ACLU maintains these folks have the right to roam our streets until something sets them off (as Virginia Tech, the Colorado theater, and now Santa Barbara) clearly demonstrate.

5. This is just another government failure to protect the public and we let the liberals get away with it!

As horrible as it has to be to have parented a child who becomes a mass murderer, when said parent publicly blames the NRA (or society at large) for the tragedy it says a lot about what that child has been taught. Rich, privileged, and mentally ill, this kid ran off the rails while his Dad was busy playing in Hollywood. There appears to have been plenty of warning signs of this and 6 more people are dead.

...James Knoll, director of forensic psychiatry at the State University of New York´s Upstate Medical University, wrote that mass killers are " ´collectors of injustice´ who nurture their wounded narcissism."

While our POTUS has not personally engaged in any mass killing sprees, he is doing it vicariously -- Obamacare´s death panels, the VA´s death panels, putting people in jail who don´t belong there while letting people out of jail who do belong there, allowing our people overseas to die without sending help, running guns into America by criminals, refusing to prosecute black on white crime,...the list goes on.

Obama is also a grievance-collector. Look at his past. Abandoned, no friends, no paper trail, no real accomplishments. Now we see what a grievance-collector looks like when it runs the country. Without conscience, feeling, entitled to adulation he doesn´t deserve, wealthy beyond most people´s wildest dreams, in the public eye and famous, hobnobbing with celebs. It´s the wet dream of Narcissists.

So is the neglect of Obama´s childhood similar to the neglect of Elliot Rodger´s neglect by his parents? They may have given him everything but themselves.

These mass killings by entitled people are not that uncommon these days, instead of looking for chemical, psychological or biological pathology, why not look at the idea that those who feel ignored have every right to kill those who ignore them? You cannot say that in every case, the person is mentally ill unless you start defining much of the entitlement culture as mentally ill. Maybe it is. Maybe killing people because you don´t get your own way is the New Normal.

Rodgers never made the connection between his overbearing materialism and girls´ not wanting to date him. He never connected his own behavior to why people avoided him.

Neither does our POTUS. Where are his old college buddies?

Sorry for mixing the two stories but the similarities are eerie.

A great friend sat at my dining table in 1988 ...

" .. I wish I was an alcoholic. Or, had a drug habit. Then I could find a date. Or, if I could bring myself to hit a woman or treat her like dirt .. but I can´t. Being a gentleman I can´t do it."

So .. nothing´s changed. Except my pal owns a number of car dealerships and is worth a fortune and did finally meet someone but he was right ..

Our culture, controlled by marketing and the media, has convince most of us all that we can have life "our way".
But that is a lie and when people who believe it get smacked in the face by reality, what do they do?
Well, some go crazy.

Much of what is happening in America is coming from people who love money and power and are willing to sacrifice America and Americans to get more of them.

Marketing is selling us, not just "things" but ideologies that are harmful to us. They want consumers who are self-indulgent and narcissistic.
Politicians, at least those on the Left, are no different, selling us excuses, handouts and a safety net when we screw up our lives... for a vote.
Combined, America is allowed to embrace the vice of choice, the sin they love the most, without judgment, condemnation or consequences. Freedom has been redefined to mean, freedom to do wrong. Anything and everything is OK to do so long as you don´t say anything negative about someone else´s vice or sin.
Try to embrace the values and morals of our Creator and you will get the wrath of the nation coming down on you, because you make people feel guilty; you are being judgmental, critical and bigoted.
This kid is a product of a culture gone bad. Most people are a part of it but don´t go around killing others when truth and reality hits... but there are exceptions.

I believe the best article on this sad case is the one by Jack Cashill. Cashill is so far the only one I´ve read who actually dissects the 140-page manifesto and other background details to get at the root causes of Rodger´s madness...lack of cultural roots, lack of parenting, lack of love, excess of feelings of smallness and worthlessness, excess of violent video games.

Each and every shooting like this gives more impetus to the facile anti-gun zealots, and more material for anti-Second-Amendment propaganda. But this has more in common with O.J. Simpson´s double murder than with Newtown or Columbine.

Nobody is entitled to another person´s affection or regard. Nobody is above being subject to rudeness and rejection. And ou can´t make someone love you or respect you. So if they don´t, then get over it.

Before he shot anyone he killed three people with a knife. In fact, he killed the same number of people with a knife as he did with a gun. Why isn´t anyone talking about knife control?

He hit and almost killed two cyclists with his car. There are more guns in the U.S. than there are cars, but more people get killed by cars every year than by guns. Why isn´t anyone talking about car control?

You don´t need a car that can go 120 miles per hour for any legitimate purpose. There should be a ban on these assault cars.

Actually, in need to be careful because some "progressive" will decide that is a good idea.

Objectification of women is to blame? I´m curious as to who has been at the forefront of this objectifying movement? Could it be modern feminists who mistook sexual promiscuity as a signal of power? Could it be that applying the serial sexual activity of the male to the female has led to the seriously frustrated and overwrought misery of so many women today? Is it possible that when denied what some men believe is a rightful position at the sexual feeding trough that some young men believe that they are marginalized by women who now openly use sex as a power chip in the high stakes game of meaningless sex? Combine all of the intrinsic mixed signals that is the social norms of the Porn Generation with the mental instability that many unguided youth have, and it´s a recipe for the periodic madness that results in these types of murders.

But I could be wrong.

The problem here is trashy parenting. Maybe I should say lazy parenting. It´s just my opinion, but that kid should not have been living on his own. The father has no business blaming guns when he knew his son had Asperger´s and he let him run wild with money.

JERUSALEM — Plans for a truce devolved into threats of a wider war Tuesday as the first significant attempt to end more than a week’s worth of round-the-clock fire between Israel and Hamas ended before it had even begun. WASHINGTON — Bowe Bergdahl, the Army sergeant who spent nearly five years as a Taliban captive in Afghanistan, was returned to regular duty Monday with a desk job that makes him available to Army investigators for questioning about his disappearance in 2009. In a brief statement, the Army said Bergdahl is now assigned to U.S. Army North at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston in Texas, the same base where he has been decompressing and recuperating from the effects of his lengthy captivity. His exact administrative duties were not immediately disclosed, but a Pentagon spokesman, Army Col. Steve Warren, said

"This is another attempt to give credibility to a deserter to protect the decision to free five extremely dangerous Taliban," Sondra Andrews, mother of fallen 2nd Lt. Darryn Andrews, said in a message to NBC News. Her son was killed in eastern Afghanistan in September 2009, and members of his platoon told the family that he was searching for Bergdahl when he was

There’s a movement sweeping the land, and if you want to call it “reform conservatism,” I agree that it’s good marketing. It promises a freshness and idealism that are appealing. What is reform conservatism? Let’s quote from one of its key documents (emphases added): Republicans . . . have always taken the side of the individual, whose freedoms are threatened by the big government that Democratic [ideas have] spawned. Our case for the individual is stronger than ever. A defense of the individual against government was never more needed. And we will continue to mount it. But we will redefine and broaden

A Fox News exclusive reported this morning by Jana Winter inexplicably buried the lede. Winter reports that several dead children have been discovered “washed up along the riverbank” of the Rio Grande, but fails to note that there have been no reports by the Obama administration on this. This indicates a pattern of covering up dead illegal alien kids by the Obama administration. It was two weeks before news was reported on the sole child death acknowledged by the Obama administration, Gilberto Ramos, a 15 year-old boy from Guatemala whose body was found in the Texas brush dead from the

The U.S. deported Honduran children as young as 1-1/2 years old on Monday in the first flight since President Obama pledged to speed up the process of sending back illegal immigrant minors from Central America. Fleeing violence and poverty, record numbers of children from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala have crossed into the United States over the past year, sparking intense debate about how to solve the problem. Monday´s flight from New Mexico to San Pedro Sula, the city with the highest murder rate in the world, returned 17 Honduran women, as well as 12 girls and nine boys, aged

Professor Stephen Hawking is backing the academic boycott of Israel by pulling out of a conference hosted by Israeli president Shimon Peres in Jerusalem as a protest at Israel´s treatment of Palestinians. Hawking, 71, the world-renowned theoretical physicist and former Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, had accepted an invitation to headline the fifth annual president´s conference, Facing Tomorrow, in June, which features major international personalities, attracts thousands of participants and this year will celebrate Peres´s 90th birthday. The Obama administration quietly announced on Tuesday that it intends to change the way Americans learn about natural disasters and other major emergencies during radio and TV broadcasts, giving the president the ability to flip a switch and address the entire nation at once. The Emergency Alert System, the latest version of a program first established in 1951, blasts out emergency messages in the event of local weather emergencies, but can also be used to warn Americans about terror attacks and major natural disasters. “Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security. The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

Senate Budget Committee ranking member Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) has warned all of his colleagues in Congress that President Barack Obama’s new immigration strategy—his plans to legalize millions of illegal alien adults through executive power—could destroy America as we know it. “I write to inform you of a development that threatens the foundation of our constitutional Republic,” Sessions, Congress’s top immigration hawk, wrote in a letter that was hand-delivered to all 535 members of Congress on Monday and provided exclusively to Breitbart News. Sessions cites a recent report from the National Journal, in which reporter Major Garrett detailed how, despite the ongoing

Inquiring minds wonder if there’s a “G” in the grading repertoire. And that does not stand for “good.” Pollster John Zogby has given President Obama an “F” this week for the White House performance on the global stage, and the researcher has no imminent good news for the president. “Some people have really bad weeks. Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff got an ‘F’ after the nation’s soccer team lost to Germany. But President Obama’s week was just as bad,” Mr. Zogby says. “Israel and the Palestinians are at war again. The president should have visited the U.S.-Mexican border, where so many immigrant children are in danger and so many

President Obama is known for being competitive on the basketball court, but he´s also apparently a cutthroat pool player. Gov. Attorney General Eric Holder encouraged Americans not to forget race while working for justice and equality in their country. “As it stands, our society is not yet color blind -- nor should it be -- given the disparities that still afflict and divide us.” Holder explained, “We must be color brave, and we must never forget that all are made better and more prosperous if all are given equal opportunities.” Holder made his remarks during a speech at Howard University on Tuesday for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Civil Rights Act. “We must take into account not only the
