Weapons, militants and Haftar: Recipe
for state-society destruction in Libya?

Armed, bloody clashes among militants have characterised the political scene in Libya for almost three years: fighting and killing aren´t news anymore. Open conflict rose to the surface after the removal of long-time dictator Muammar Gaddafi from power in the 2011 uprising, with armed rebels refusing to unite under the umbrella of a national army functioning within the bounds of state authority. Yet the bitter fighting that erupted last week between forces loyal to retired General Khalifa Haftar and Islamist militants signaled a new low in the politico-security mess. A hint on Haftar - In most news outlets around the world, the actions, moves

Comments:
We may have found a real fighter (General Khalifa Haftar) who has an army and support of the CIA to fight the Al Qaeda in Libya. Time will tell. Notice his arrival was about a year before Ambassador Stevens was murdered in Benghazi.

When Hospital Systems

Another hospital system wants to buy another health insurance company, and consumers may well wonder what this trend could mean for them. (Snip) By acting in cooperation, a unified organization might be able to better design incentives for higher-quality care. Or, by combining similar functions like human resources or tech support, the organization might cut costs. A joint provider-insurer may also be better able to adapt to — and make more money from — new Medicare payment models in the Affordable Care Act. Eventually, an organization that combines the functions of health care provision and health care insurance might have

The Department for Education (DfE) has urged schools to be vigilant in guarding against the dangers of female genital mutilation ahead of the summer holidays, known to be a particularly dangerous time for at-risk girls. The department has sent out an email to all schools in England and Wales drawing attention to updated guidelines designed to keep girls safe before the start of the summer break, sometimes referred to as the "cutting season" for girls at risk of mutilation. Michael Gove previously wrote to all headteachers advising them of the dangers of the practice, which involves the removal of a girl's outer sexual organs and can lead to lifelong

Cairo - Egypt´s interim president urged Egyptians on Sunday to come out and vote in this week´s presidential election, saying the vote will shape the nation´s future. In a televised address, Adly Mansour also sought to assure Egyptians that state institutions, including his office, would not interfere in the Monday and Tuesday voting. (Snip) In separate development, a suspected member of an al-Qaida-inspired group has been killed by his own roadside bomb in Egypt´s restive Sinai Peninsula, according to Egyptian security officials. Washington - A price-fixing investigation into the auto parts industry has mushroomed into the Justice Department´s largest criminal antitrust probe ever, and it´s not over. The investigation was made public four years ago with FBI raids in the Detroit area. It´s led to criminal charges against dozens of people and companies, stretched across continents and reverberated through an industry responsible for supplying critical car components. Thirty-four individuals have been charged and 27 companies have pleaded guilty or agreed to do so. Collectively, they´ve agreed to pay about $2.3 billion in fines.

Richmond, Va. - Owners of brands geared toward children of all ages are battling to keep notable names like Thin Mint, Tootsie Roll and Cinnamon Toast Crunch off the flavored nicotine used in electronic cigarettes. Now the owners of those trademarks are fighting back to make sure their brands aren´t being used to sell an addictive drug or make it appealing to to children. General Mills Inc., the Girl Scouts of the USA and Tootsie Roll Industries Inc. are among several companies that have sent cease-and-desist letters to makers of the liquid nicotine demanding they stop using the brands and may take further legal action if necessary.

Pope Francis arrives in Israel
after visit to Jordan, West Bank
Ynet News [Israel], by Staff    Original Article

Pope Francis arrived in Israel to much fanfare Sunday after his visit to Jordan and the Palestinian territories. The Roman Catholic pontiff landed at Ben Gurion Airport and was greeted with a state ceremony. Before his arrival in Israel, Francis met with Palestinians at the Deheisheh Refugee Camp, where he listened to their grievances and hardships in the face of Israeli administration of the West Bank. The Pope also held Mass at Manger Square in Bethlehem. At the service, Francis called on Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to come pray for peace at the Vatican next month.

The nation’s last unchallenged state same-sex marriage ban is about to lose that status. “There will be a case filed challenging North Dakota’s same-sex marriage ban,” says Joshua Newville, a Minneapolis-based civil rights attorney who filed a suit Thursday against South Dakota’s ban on behalf of same-sex couples there. Newville is in talks with advocates and attorneys in North Dakota and confirmed that either he or another attorney will bring a lawsuit against that state’s ban within six to eight weeks. Pope Francis prayed in silence and pressed his forehead against the wall that separates Jerusalem from the West Bank town of Bethlehem on Sunday, during a visit which Palestinians claimed as affirmation of their claim to statehood. In an unscheduled stop during his visit to Bethlehem, the town where Christ was born, the Pope ordered his white Popemobile to stop as it passed the separation barrier built by the Israelis. He prayed for a few minutes at the graffiti-daubed section of the wall, beneath a watch tower manned by Israeli soldiers. "He got down from the Popemobile and walked up to the wall," said the

Beirut - A car bomb struck a pro-government neighborhood in the central Syrian city of Homs on Sunday, killing at least 10 people, setting cars on fire and sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky, activists and a government official said. The blast in the Zahra district, which is predominantly inhabited by Alawites and Christians, sent tremors through Homs, where rebels and the government have struck two cease-fire deals this month that have restored at least a semblance of peace to the shattered city. The provincial governor, Talal Barazzi, said the attack targeted such reconciliation efforts in Homs.

Bethlehem, West Bank - Pope Francis took a dramatic plunge Sunday into Mideast politics while on his Holy Land pilgrimage, receiving an acceptance from the Israeli and Palestinian presidents to visit him at the Vatican next month to discuss embattled peace efforts. The summit was an important moral victory for the pope, who is named after the peace-loving Francis of Assisi. Israeli-Palestinian peace talks broke down in late April, and there have been no public high-level meetings for a year. Francis landed in Bethlehem, the cradle of Christianity, in a symbolic nod to Palestinian aspirations for their own state.

The first Memorial Day I can remember was just a few years after the end of World War II. I was in second grade and my teacher, Miss Frank, told us, choking back her tears, what it meant. Her beloved brother had died just a few years earlier, training another young aviator in taking off from the deck of a carrier. Something went wrong and they both plunged into the sea and their deaths. My classmates and I had then still vivid memories of separation from our fathers, uncles, and brothers, and war deaths of our own loved ones. Memorial Day was sacred. In recent years the day’s meaning has often been lost in the holiday atmosphere

ASHINGTON — White House officials have been holding private meetings this week aimed at soothing lawmakers’ concerns over the U.S. posture in Syria, the future of the American military presence in Afghanistan and defense spending. The meetings come as a frustrated White House seeks to push back at criticism of President Barack Obama’s foreign policy. But the White House outreach appeared to be having little effect on some lawmakers’ concerns. Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, described Tuesday night’s White House meeting with chief of staff Denis McDonough and national security adviser Susan

What a society chooses to memorialize says a lot about what it values, which is worth contemplating this weekend as the nation recognizes the sacrifices of military men and women who died in service to their country. (Snip) Warrior culture pervades American society, from the military flyovers at major public events to the video games we play, to the movies and TV shows we watch. It even informs the vocabulary of our political life, where "war chests" finance "campaigns" by "foot soldiers" in "battleground" states directed by top "lieutenants." Less militarily, there´s the obligatory singing of the national anthem before

Two frightening incidents of vandalism in El Paso near the Mexican border in Texas have been interpreted as warnings from drug cartels. In both instances, a mannequin wearing a suit and tie was tied to a billboard with a noose and messages were scrawled over the placards. Local station KHOU reports that one of the signs reads ´Plata o Plombo´ which translates to ´silver or lead´, a threat used commonly against police officers effectively warning that if they do not accept the cartel´s bribes then they will be shot. ´This symbol has historically been used by Mexican drug cartels to

A gunman went on a drive-by shooting rampage in a Santa Barbara student enclave and at least seven people were killed, including the attacker, authorities said. Investigators believe a 22-year-old named Elliot Rodger driving a black BMW acted alone in the shootings late Friday night near the University of California, Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown confirmed at a news conference early Saturday that that seven people were killed, including the gunman, and seven wounded. Rodger is thought to be the son of Peter Rodger, assistant director of the Hollywood film franchise The Hunger Games. Authorities are examining

After breaking into an elderly widow’s house twice in a row, two teenagers were killed by an armed occupant, in self-defense. Steven Crider, 17, and Michael Sambrano, 14, were shot in the chest numerous times after breaking in to the widow’s home. Now, the dead thieves’ friends and family are publicly complaining that “it was wrong that they were shot” and that the thieves were just “tryin’ to eat.” Everyone needs to eat, but how many people actually need to steal in order to eat? The number must be extremely small.

They had a dream. For almost a hundred years now, the famed academic-artistic-and-punditry industrial complex has dreamed of a government run by their kind of people (i.e., nature’s noblemen), whose intelligence, wit, and refined sensibilities would bring us a heaven on earth. Their keen intellects would cut through the clutter as mere mortals’ couldn’t. They would lift up the wretched, oppressed by cruel forces. Above all, they would counter the greed of the merchants, the limited views of the business community, and the ignorance of the conformist and dim middle class.
