Walmart employee on light duty
claims bathroom assignment is punishment

KSLA-TV [Shreveport, LA], by Carolyn Roy

A Bossier City Walmart employee says what his managers made him do on a recent shift was degrading. 59-year-old Roger Digilormo has worked at Walmart for 11 years. After being injured on the job, he had to have surgery and physical therapy. When he returned to work, he was placed on light duty while under a doctor´s supervision. Unable to lift heavy boxes, Digilormo had been working in the store´s Garden Center, checking receipts and monitoring the entrance. But on Friday, he was given a new assignment after telling his supervisor that he could not out in the sun because of the medication he is currently taking.

Sounds as if the whiner was attempting to be placed on disability so he could collect workers comp.
Having been a long time volunteer for a non-profit, I can smell them a mile away.

I was employed at Publix for 11 years. I was hired to bag groceries AND take my regular turn at bathroom clean-up. Big deal, it was a paycheck and that was what I was there for.

No thanks for Wal-Mart from this guy for putting him on the light duty he requested in the garden section. It´s not their fault the sun interferes with his medication. They could have laid him off completely (and his disability probably wouldn´t have equalled his pay after 11 years) but they gave him other light duty for the time being.

It soundsas though Walmart has tried to find work for him that suits his limitations. Whom does he think should clean the bathrooms? I don´t believe "degrading" applies here.

He didn´t have to clean the bathrooms. He was to monitor them for cleanliness. To move from bathroom to bathroom to be sure they were up to standard. And that was only part of a shift. The chair was provided for his own comfort, so that he could sit down if he needed to. He wasn´t supposed to park in the bathrooms.

Management also says that all of the bathrooms ARE air-conditioned.

This is his brother Carl pitching a fit. Taking his photo. Whining "ain´t it awful" and wiping away alligator tears.

Feh.

Is he so disabled that he can´t do more than sit in a chair? Sounds like there is some meaning between the lines of this story.

Wal-Mart has handy little ear loop masks to use while you spray or squirt cleaner in the toilets. Gloves to wear and bowl brushes to use while you clean them, and throw away disinfectant wipes to wipe off all surfaces and toss in the trash. If there isn´t an automatic deodorizer, there are many deodorizers available at Wal-Mart as well. All of that can be done very easily, and he apparently has hours to get it all done. Even mopping isn´t the chore it once was.

He says he can´t be in the sun, so they gave him a job where the sun don´t shine. What´s his problem?
Years ago, I worked at a locally owned fast food restaurant in Seattle.(Burgermaster, best burgers and shakes in town BTW) Sometimes, the manager would tell me to go out and pick up litter in the parking lot. At first, i was a bit insulted, but when I did, I found the owner out picking up litter with me. No job is beneath you if it´s legal and you´re getting paid for it.
Off-topic, but a few years after I quit working there, I ran into the owner at a store and said hi, and that I used to work for him. He told me he remembered me because I was one of those who worked hard and caused no trouble. Sadly, he died a few years ago in a fall at his home. He was a nice guy.

Seems like a scam to me, too. But even if the management had been somehow cruel to him, that´s the management, not the company. Try doing this kind of thing as a PA (pretty much the same level of work he´s doing) in Hollywood and you´ll see how quickly you ever work again in the business.

I occasionally stop at a ChikFilA while traveling. On more than one occasion I have seen the store manager (who might also be the owner) cleaning the restrooms. While not the most pleasant or desirable job, it is a job that needs to be done, even at home.

FTA: Roger is due back for his next shift on Sunday. Cody says he is expected to return to greeting customers at the front of the store. (emphasis mine.)

So, he was used to standing inside the front door, inside the shade, airconditioned.
But when he came back to work after surgery, someone else was assigned to the front door.
And he was sent to the garden door, where there was some sunshine.
When he complained, rather than move the person assigned to the front door, they told him to check the bathrooms.
Unfortunately, they gave him a chair. Rather than walk between the two bathroom areas, he chose to sit (and publicly complain) for the entire shift.

Every Walmart store has bathrooms at the front of the store and at the back of the store. In over 30 years of shopping at various WM stores, I´ve never seen a chair or attendant in a bathroom.

Walmart would be within deciding that he could return to work when the doctor gave him a full release. They would probably be within their rights to fire him "for cause" (no unemployment if fired) for the online post disparaging the employer, but that would be covered in the Employee Handbook.

He was not to CLEAN the bathrooms. Just circulate around and check them. The chair was for him to sit down if he needed to.

He and his brother Carl have turned this half-day assignment into a cause celebre, to what end I cannot imagine.

Walmart did everything right, accommodating his inability to work full duty, lift heavy things, sit in the sun, etc. He is a kvetcher and a whiner and Carolyn Roy should be ashamed of herself for doing this absurd story.

The front door assignment will also require him to have a chair nearby as he is still recovering from surgery.

Many years ago when I was a single gal with no kids I worked as an operations manager at a retail store. Not only did I come in on my days off and unload trucks in steel-toed boots, jeans and a t-shirt; I would clean bathrooms in a business suit if they needed it. Don´t feel sorry for him. At least he gets paid hourly. I was on salary and worked 70-80 hours per week.

The percentage of adults without health insurance has plummeted since major provisions of the Affordable Care Act took effect at the beginning of this year, but opposition to the law has intensified, according Gallup-Healthways surveys. In a conference call Thursday, an analyst for the organization painted a comprehensive picture where the law known as Obamacare stands with the public and the effects it has had on health coverage. The results are based on some 2 million interviews the company has conducted since 2008. As of April, 43 percent of Americans approved of the law, while 51 percent disapproved. Dan Witters, research

The U.S. economy was battered even more than first suspected by the harsh winter, actually shrinking from January through March. The result marked the first retreat in three years, but economists are confident the downturn was temporary. Gross domestic product contracted at an annual rate of 1 percent in the first quarter, the Commerce Department said Thursday. That was worse than the government´s initial estimate last month that GDP during the period grew by a slight 0.1 percent. The economy last posted a decline in the first three months of 2011 when it dropped 1.3 percent. This year´s weakening reflected slower stockpiling

The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School.
