As Publishers Fight Amazon, Books Vanish
New York Times, by David Streitfeld & Melissa Eddy

Amazon’s power over the publishing and bookselling industries is unrivaled in the modern era. Now it has started wielding its might in a more brazen way than ever before. Seeking ever-higher payments from publishers to bolster its anemic bottom line, Amazon is holding books and authors hostage on two continents by delaying shipments and raising prices. The literary community is fearful and outraged — and practically begging for government intervention. (Snip) The battle is being waged largely over physical books. In the United States, Amazon has been discouraging customers from buying titles from Hachette, the fourth-largest

On an earlier thread, someone mentioned an app that would let me read Kindle books on my Nook. But Mr. Google indicates that that was a bug that has been plugged by Barnes & Noble.

Anyone have any more information? I´m seeing indications that the Nook format is the Betamax of ebooks. I do love my Nook (tablet) better than my sister´s Kindle.

This is a lot more serious than you realize. Amazon is trying to take control of the entire publishing business, meaning that Amazon and only Amazon will decide what books are published and sold.

Maybe I am wrong but I did not see it that way. First off I can buy any book I want and not use Amazon. Amazon is so big and successful that publishers found it very profitable to sell there. Now that Amazon wants to raise its fees they do not like it and claim it is Holding them "hostage" and they are "fearful". Baloney sell somewhere else if they do not like the fees. Most new books are available through most library systems anyway. "Mr. Patterson’s novels due to be released this summer and fall are now impossible to buy from Amazon in either print or digital form." Well if I want his books I will go somewhere else and buy them.

You can root a nook. Then you can use the kindle app. That was what I did so I wouldn´t be locked into a format dictated by Barnes & Noble. As for Amazon - I tend to buy books in .epub format instead of Kindle format anyway - rather not be locked into a specific format dictated by Amazon either. The other solution - just by an iPad or an Android tablet and you can use both. I like the Nook. It´s a shame B&N is so juvenile.

Why Isn´t Obama Going to the Border?
National Journal, by James Oliphant & George E. Condon Jr.    Original Article
Posted By: LittleHoodedMonk- 7/7/2014 4:45:57 PM     Post Reply
President Obama evidently has decided not to put a human face on the crisis unfolding at the U.S. southern border—not even his own. The White House said over and over again Monday that Obama will not travel to the border with Mexico despite flying to Texas this week to raise money for Democratic candidates there. It´s certainly in part a political decision, one meant to avoid taking ownership of a difficult issue on which the White House would prefer to share blame. (Snip) In other words, if Obama goes goes to the border, he owns the problem. If he doesn't, he's blasted for a lack of leadership.

A federal judge approved a preliminary settlement between the N.F.L. and lawyers for the more than 4,500 retired players who sued the league, accusing it of hiding the dangers of concussions and repeated head hits. The judge’s consent, which was widely anticipated, means that all of the roughly 18,000 retired players and their beneficiaries can now vote on the deal, which includes a promise from the N.F.L. to pay an unlimited amount of awards to players with certain severe neurological conditions. Legal experts anticipate that it will be approved because the new settlement addressed the main concern United States District

Washington - The Central Intelligence Agency was involved in a spying operation against Germany that led to the alleged recruitment of a German intelligence official and has prompted renewed outrage in Berlin, two U.S. officials familiar with the matter said on Monday. CIA Director John Brennan has asked to brief key members of the U.S. Congress on the matter, which threatens a new rupture between Washington and a close European ally, one of the officials said. It was unclear if and when Brennan´s briefing to U.S. lawmakers would take place. The CIA declined any comment on the matter.

Uber’s war against entrenched taxi companies saw its most recent move Monday when the company announced that it would slash prices 20 percent in New York City. An UberX, the cheapest ride offered by the company, is now several dollars cheaper than a traditional taxi in New York City, where yellow cabs are still a staple, Uber says. Uber slashed its prices in Boston last month, knocking rates down a full 25 percent. The change would make an UberX trip from Copley Square to Harvard Square only $10. A taxi, the company says, would cost $17. San Francisco, where Uber was incubated, boasts an even more drastic disparity between

Publicly, Obama has remained noncommittal on the 2016 race, but privately he worries that Clinton would undo and undermine many of his policies. There’s also a personal animosity, especially with Bill Clinton, that dates from their tough race six years ago. A former Harvard law professor and administration aide, Warren would energize the left wing of the Democrat Party just as Obama did against Clinton in 2008.
