[UPDATE]: Seven Dead, Seven Injured
in Isla Vista ‘Mass Murder’ Shooting

Santa Barbara Independent, by Tyler Hayden and Matt Kettman

Original Article

Posted By:SoCalGal, 5/24/2014 10:30:08 AM

A lone gunman killed six people and injured seven more during a shooting rampage Friday night in Isla Vista that Sheriff Bill Brown called “the work of a madman.” The suspect was killed after firing on responding deputies, but it’s not clear if the fatal wound to his head was self-inflicted or the result of return fire. (Snip)Initial reports suggested that two suspects were involved in the shooting, but Brown said during a 2:30 a.m. press conference Saturday morning that the gunman acted alone. Brown said the man was armed with a semi-automatic handgun and that investigators are working to

Article goes on to say that although the internet postings of Elliott Rodger may be connected, that has not been established. So the shooter´s name has not been confirmed.

This article has much more detail than the others posted. It does sound as though Rodger is the guy. The writers ran a match on the license plate on the car the shooter crashed and it was Rodger´s. His posting about doing the shooting was put up on the internet the day before.

A video he made is linked with a warning.

It took a while for me to get the article, but it was worth it.

Re #1, I erred on one thing. The Independent matched the license plate on the car they photographed at the crash scene with one he posted on his Facebook page. They did not run a DMV match.

Re #2, read again. The writers were quoting Santa Barbara County Sheriff Brown. That was his description of the weapon found with the shooter.

It was Sheriff Bill Brown, who said "The man was armed with a ´semiautomatic handgun´" #2. The Independent was quoting him as they should have. So if there is a mistake about the description of the weapon it is the Sheriff´s mistake, not the newspaper´s.

While the type of weapon is being nitpicked (one would think the sheriff would use a correct law enforcement desription), has anyone viewed Rodger´s YouTube video linked here?

I just did. He was a depraved man with a decidedly histrionic view of himself. This was a scripted video (he had to consult the script off to his left) -his own movie starring him - intended to terrify. Then he went through with it. Did no one see it and report it to authorities?

I have never been as concerned about overt macho types, even bullies, as I have about the meek-looking nerdy types. In my opinion many of them are simmering pots similar to Rodger, ready to boil over at some point.

#8: You´re correct about the "meek, nerdy types". They can be the biggest bullies going and they don´t just use brawn. The same things that make them out of sync with society often make them dangerous.

Nerds in and of themselves are not unpopular. They are often the life of the party. It seems like this guy wanted to be the life of the party and couldn´t come close. I feel so sorry for his parents, I don´t doubt they tried to integrate him with his peers.

On another note, he declared himself after "blondes". Also his father is of the successful Hollywood elite and California has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation. I think this story may not have legs after this initial flurry. But I´d certainly like to know how he got his gun when it´s very difficult for anyone else in CA to get one of that type. I´d also like to know what meds he might have been on.

I know I´m being a bit nitpicky myself here, but there are several types of handguns that are not semiautomatic, so the terminology is properly descriptive.
There are revolvers.
There are single shots like the Contender.
There are manually operated like the XP-100.
All are handguns, but none are semi-auto.

Thanks, #5. Too bad threads are hijacked by those who are nitpicking - and in error to boot. Happens too often.

Some were fretting about the fact that the shooter´s identity had not been released. They know who he is. But release to the public is pending notification of his family. The UK tabloids don´t care about such niceties - and they ran with a connection to a YouTube video (a connection made by others), not a positive ID by the police.

#9, it is not at all difficult to legally buy a handgun in California. The first obstacle is that one has to be 21. The other rules are not at all hard to follow and with the exception of the 10 day wait period there is nothing particularly hard to comply with for legal residents who own a car and have it registered within the state. Any gun store will walk you through the process and ten days later you have your handgun.

Even ammunition is getting much easier to purchase, particularly online where it is delivered to your home. The ten round restriction referring to magazine capacity is actually a reasonable limit even though it flies in the face of the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution as does all restrictions whatsoever.

Everything I´ve seen, read and heard says this was one seriously "disturbed" individual. Crazy as an out-house mouse is how the folks around here would describe him.

So I´ll ask the question that´s going to get me in trouble: where was mom and dad when this kid was running off the rails? He simmered for a while before the lid blew off the pressure cooker. No one noticed? Maybe he didn´t live at home and mom and dad hadn´t seen him in a while.

He didn´t have any friends?

Maybe not. Maybe it wasn´t just the girls who steered clear of him. May the guys shunned him as well.

Whatever. The whole thing is just sad beyond words.

Now we´ll have to go another round with the Gun Grabbers.

President Barack Obama is holding off for now on seeking new legal authority to send unaccompanied migrant kids back home faster from the Southern border, following criticism that the administration´s planned changes were too harsh. Instead when Obama formally asks Congress for more than $2 billion in emergency spending Tuesday to deal with the border crisis, the request will not be accompanied by the policy changes that the White House had indicated it planned to seek, according to two congressional aides. The aides spoke Monday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the matter by name

It´s probably safe to go back in the water. Despite a recent string of shark sightings off Manhattan Beach, including one that ended with a swimmer being hospitalized after he was bitten near the pier Saturday morning, reports of shark attacks are uncommon in the United States, records show. According to data tracked by the Florida Museum of Natural History, there were 39 reported shark attacks in California from 2001 to 2013, or 3.25 per year, and five of them resulted in fatalities. East Coast swimmers are much more likely to wind up the victims of a shark attack, according to the data.

LONDON — Eugenie Bouchard is a rising phenom, bound and determined to be a champ, but her fortnight at Wimbledon turned into a harsh wannabe’s tutorial Saturday when Czech star Petra Kvitova shaped the ladies singles championship into her own 55-minute clinic in speed dating with destiny. Kvitova, a fitter, faster, and more focused version of the woman who won here in 2011, pulverized Bouchard, 6-3, 6-0, in a thorough and powerful game of yellow-ball keepaway. For the brief time she was out there, the seemingly stunned Bouchard, a 20-year-old Montrealer, found herself unable to buy a second’s respite or

When Washington imposed sanctions in June 2012 on Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, he dismissed it as an empty gesture. Two years later, Shekau’s skepticism appears well founded: his Islamic militant group is now the biggest security threat to Africa´s top oil producer, is richer than ever, more violent and its abductions of women and children continue with impunity. As the United States, Nigeria and others struggle to track and choke off its funding, Reuters interviews with more than a dozen current and former U.S. officials who closely follow Boko Haram provide the most complete picture to date of how the group
