Aden - Dozens of suspected Qaeda militants launched a night-time assault on one of southeastern Yemen´s main cities sparking fierce fighting that killed at least 15 people, security sources said on Saturday. They attacked army bases and public buildings in Seiyun, second city of Hadramawt province, with car bombs, rocket-launchers and heavy machineguns, the sources said. The regional military headquarters, the special forces base and the main police station were all targeted, along with local government offices and banks. The assault in Hadramawt, a jihadist stronghold that has seen large-scale attacks on the army in the past,

Why are we now seeing "Qaeda" instead of "Al Qaeda" - is this a linguistic correction or is there some PC reason?

The Biggest Non-Story in
Tuesday’s Elections? Mississippi
Voter ID Implemented With No Problems

It wasn’t the biggest story following Tuesday’s elections in various states, but it was the biggest and most-ignored non-story. Mississippi’s new voter ID law got its first run in the June 3 primary, and the sky did not fall. Despite the tiresome and disproven claims by opponents that such laws cause wholesale voter disenfranchisement and are intended to suppress votes, Mississippi “sailed through” its first test of the new ID requirements, according to The Clarion Ledger, the newspaper of Jackson, Miss. Aside from being able to use any form of government-issued photo ID, like every other state with ID requirements,

Washington - A group of Roman Catholic bishops and Orthodox Christians wants the Vatican to lift a ban on married priests for a small segment of the American church. The committee wants the Vatican to allow ordination for married men in Eastern-rite Catholic churches in North America. Eastern-rite Catholics accept the authority of the pope but have many of their own rituals and liturgy. There are more than a dozen Eastern Catholic church groups in North America, but their total numbers are small. Eastern Catholic churches in the Middle East and Europe already ordain married men. But the Vatican banned the practice in America in the

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reveals in her new book that Barack Obama’s team asked her to attack Alaska Governor Sarah Palin after Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) chose her as his running mate in the 2008 presidential race. "[The Obama camp] immediately issued a dismissive statement and reached out to me in hopes I would follow suit,” she wrote. “But I wouldn’t.” (Snip) “I was not going to attack Palin just for being a woman appealing for support from other women,” she wrote. “I didn't think it made political sense, and it didn't feel right. Both Democrats and Republicans have rejected an excuse offered by the White House for why they were unable to inform Congress of the Bergdahl prisoner swap. The White House has offered several excuses for why it failed to notify Congress 30 days in advance as required by law. In a briefing for Senators Wednesday, the White House claimed Bergdahl´s life was in danger if word of the swap leaked to the media. The AP was first to publish word of the threat to Bergdahl´s life on Thursday. Their initial story was only a few paragraphs and attributed the claim to three unnamed "congressional officials."

There he goes again. At a press conference in Brussels Thursday, President Obama was asked if he was surprised by the controversy over his decision to trade Bowe Bergdahl for five high-ranking Taliban leaders. His response was vintage Obama: “I’m never surprised by controversies that are whipped up in Washington.” Thus establishing from the start that he considers the controversy to be a kind of partisan farce, he proceeded to rebut criticisms virtually no one has made. This is Obama’s favorite rhetorical trick; he builds and then tears apart a straw man while insisting that the American people are on

The Obama White House genuinely believed the release of the American soldier who disappeared in 2009 in Afghanistan would provide a triumphant moment for the president and a moment for national unity. Otherwise, there would have been no Rose Garden celebration featuring the president and Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s parents. Some in the White House surely saw the Rose Garden bit as a chance to play rope-a-dope with their political adversaries after weeks of getting beaten up over the Veterans Administration scandal. They might have calculated that a knee-jerk Republican offensive against the deal — Bergdahl in trade for five

Angry debate on Morning Joe

This debate has raged on blogs and social media ever since Barack Obama put his arm around Robert Bergdahl, so having it erupt of Morning Joe today is less of a surprise and more of a cathartic. Chuck Todd, traveling with Obama on his tour of Europe, reacted to criticism from Joe Scarborough of the elder Bergdahl for his Taliban-friendly behavior prior to the release. Todd rebuked Scarborough for criticizing the father of a captive, a situation that’s impossible to imagine without experiencing it himself, but Scarborough angrily retorts that the father’s actions are open to criticism — especially those prior to his son’s desertion:

The seeds of what blossomed grotesquely in the Rose Garden last weekend — a celebration of the release of five senior Taliban military leaders in exchange for a U.S. sergeant purported to be a deserter — were sown a long time ago: on the second and third days of President Obama’s first term, to be precise. On his second day in office, the president signed an executive order directing that the Guantanamo Bay detention facility be closed. You can watch the cringe-inducing video of the signing ceremony on YouTube, as the president stumbles through a reading of the order to

One of the most striking elements of the Bowe Bergdahl affair is word that top Army officers were so anxious to keep the matter a secret that they directed Bergdahl´s fellow soldiers to sign a pledge of silence about his 2009 decision to walk away from duty in Afghanistan. "Many of Bergdahl´s fellow troops…signed nondisclosure agreements agreeing to never share any information about Bergdahl´s disappearance and the efforts to recapture him," wrote CNN´s Jake Tapper, who first reported the agreements last Sunday. U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl at one point during his captivity converted to Islam, fraternized openly with his captors and declared himself a "mujahid," or warrior for Islam, according to secret documents prepared on the basis of a purported eyewitness account and obtained by Fox News. The reports indicate that Bergdahl´s relations with his Haqqani captors morphed over time, from periods of hostility, where he was treated very much like a hostage, to periods where, as one source told Fox News, "he became much more of an accepted fellow" than is popularly understood.
