Toronto mayor in rehab: Canadian clinic
Australian Associated Press, by Staff

Original Article

A rehab facility in a small Ontario town has confirmed that Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is undergoing treatment at its clinic. GreenStone Clinic Muskoka in Bala, Ontario, said Ford consented to having the facility confirm his stay. Ford announced late last month that he was seeking treatment for an alcohol problem after a new video surfaced that appeared to show Ford smoking a crack pipe late last month. It was the latest twist in the ongoing saga of Ford, whose notorious and frequently filmed behaviour led the city council to strip him of most of his powers after he admitted last year that he had smoked crack in a "drunken stupor"

And the saga continues to the north...

An odd incident to report from the White House. A man approached officers at the northwest gate of the White House this afternoon and proceeded to take off all of his clothes. When the officers tried to subdue him, the disrobed man became combative and tried to assault them, according to a Secret Service spokesman. The man was arrested and charged with two counts of assault and one count of indecent exposure, authorities said, noting that during the arrest, the man sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. This is just the latest in a string of strange spectacles at the White House in recent weeks.

No more get-out-of-jail-free
cards for Minnesota legislators
Washington Post, by Reid Wilson    Original Article

Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie (D) is robbing state lawmakers of a cherished perk long used to get them out of sticky situations: A card that allows legislators to avoid arrest while the state House or Senate are in session. Under the state constitution, lawmakers cannot be detained except in cases of treason, felony or breach of the peace. The wallet-sized card has been used to get lawmakers out of drunken driving charges and other arrests, the Star-Tribune said. The cards don’t allow lawmakers to avoid being charged with a crime, but they cannot be detained unless charged with a felony.

A mortar attack on an election campaign tent packed with supporters of President Bashar Assad killed 39 people and wounded 205 according to Syrian state TV. The shelling earlier Friday marked the first attack on a campaign event ahead of the June 3 vote that Assad is widely expected to win, the Associated Press reports. Opposition activists and the West have condemned the elections — which come in the midst of a three-year civil war — as a sham. State television first showed images of Assad supporters in the southern city of Daraa dancing in a tent. Next it showed dead and wounded people, including children, lying on the ground.

Shelly Sterling is working to resolve the dispute amicably and has been in talks with her attorney and NBA lawyers for the last couple weeks. She wants to “have meaningful control” over the transaction. “She has no plans to sue the NBA,” the individual said.

President Obama is taking a swipe at the Founding Fathers, blaming his inability to move his agenda on the “disadvantage” of having each state represented equally in the Senate. At a Democratic fundraiser in Chicago Thursday night, Mr. Obama told a small group of wealthy supporters that there are several hurdles to keeping Democrats in control of the Senate and recapturing the House. One of those problems, he said, is the apportionment of two Senate seats to each state regardless of population. “Obviously, the nature of the Senate means that California has the same number of Senate seats as Wyoming.

Why do some political scandals stick while others fade? The level of media obsession seems to rise and fall as mysteriously as the stock market. On Benghazi, sell. Hold on the IRS audits. On the Department of Veterans Affairs scandal, buy, buy, buy. In the broader scandal market, fraud or criminality helps. Political intrigue is a plus. Sexual content increases attention but may eventually seem pathetically human and excusable. Conservatives are convinced that the liberal media are harder on Republicans. There is a natural human tendency to attribute good motives to people with whom you agree — and corrupt motives
