How the Internet Killed Tom Cruise
Washington Free Beacon, by Sonny Bunch

Original Article

There’s a great, longish piece by Amy Nicholson on how the Internet has made us misremember Tom Cruise’s couch-jumping misadventure with Oprah and the impact this has had on his career. You should read the whole thing; I just wanted to briefly highlight this: Building up to 2005, Cruise had tackled some of the most challenging dramas of any actor of his generation: Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia, Vanilla Sky. Even his popcorn flicks — Minority Report,Collateral, War of the Worlds — were intriguingly dark. He’d never played it safe or shot a cash-grab. He trusted that if he chose movies he

Actually, Sonny, Tom Cruise killed Tom Cruise. His obnoxious behavior and arrogance about Scientology did it and don´t for one second think anyone likes this guy anymore. Check out comments after any story about him.He is roundly disliked.

Tom cruise is ALWAYS tom cruise in a movie. Like costner was always costner in a movie and that gets to be so boring.

I don´t think that fully explains it, #4. John Wayne was always John Wayne and it never got boring.

Tom Cruise is just plain unlikable, best I can tell.

´Taps´ and ´Risky Business´ and ´The Firm´ were about real people in quirky situations. Tom did fine. Fis movies today-Tom stomping around with explosions in the backgrounds. Tom plays a tough secret agent trying to get something from villans. Tom doesn´t do so good. Especially when you can´t tell one film from another.

I liked Cruise best in South Park´s "Trapped in the Closet." He was quite animated in that röle. ("Oh, yeah? I´m gonna sue you....")

He was also good in Paul Thomas Anderson´s Magnolia. No doubt his proselytizing for Scientology and his close friendship with Scientology´s evil chief Miscavidge just magnified his unlikability.

#1 and #4 nailed it, all I´d add is:

The only thing Tom Cruise had to portray Jack Reacher is his ego (which the character does not have) his money bought the rights to make the film, but even ego can´t make Tom Cruise fill "six foot six with a 52 inch chest" as described in the books.

My ex was 6´5" and had Jack Reacher´s jack-rabbit reactions, a shrimp like TC can´t convey (or create) the shock and surprise when lightening strikes from a "lumbering, casual" big guy, as detailed in the books.

I wondered how many actors/actresses have suffered similar fates due to social media. I don´t understand why Anne Hathaway and Katherine Heigel are said to be among the "most hated actresses" but I´ve seen links (that I don´t open) to sites proclaiming this, I´ve seen it on Facebook, it´s everywhere. Cruise jumps on a couch, Heigel makes a snarky comment about the Emmys and it takes on a life of its own in social media.

Dr. West said he was happy Romney didn’t win, but far from satisfied with the Obama record and especially with the just-ended presidential campaign: So we end up with such a narrow, truncated political discourse, as the major problems—ecological catastrophe, climate change, global warming. So it’s very sad. I mean, I’m glad there was not a right-wing takeover, but we end up with a Republican, a Rockefeller Republican in blackface, with Barack Obama, so

National uproar over the Veterans Affairs scandal should refocus the nation´s attention to the issue of health care rationing. Under VA care, 40 patients died while waiting for treatment at a Phoenix, Ariz., facility. Not only is that the tip of the iceberg in terms of what government-run health care means for patients, it should also sound the alarm about the newest tactic for rationing care, bedside rationing. In an effort to bend the health care cost curve, oncology doctors may soon be encouraged to do the government’s and insurers’ bidding in rationing high-cost health care treatments and procedures. Reporting from Washington— The armed Taliban fighters who captured Bowe Bergdahl in southeastern Afghanistan on June 30, 2009, quickly handed him to a far more dangerous group that shuttled him between hide-outs in Pakistan´s rugged tribal belt for the next five years. For much of that time, CIA drones trolled the skies overhead, searching for signs of the missing U.S. soldier. Until late last year, the drones fired missiles that killed hundreds of fighters and at least one senior leader of the militant group, known as the Haqqani network. A five-month halt in the CIA drone strikes this year coincided with intensifying efforts

Today — Father’s Day — children of all ages will show their appreciation for their dads with gifts, cards or just spending time together. But for a growing number of men this Father’s Day, the best gift is one their kids can’t offer: a job. For that we can blame our chronically sluggish economy — and our bankrupt leadership in Washington. True, the nation churned out 217,000 new jobs in May. That means we’ve finally recovered all the jobs we’ve lost since the financial collapse, and the number countrywide is now at an all-time high. Even so, the picture is more complex. As

For at least three reasons, the contemporary persecution of Christians demands attention: It is occurring on a massive scale, it is underreported, and in many parts of the world it is rapidly growing. The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life finds that Christians are suffering persecution in more places today than any other religious group; between 2006 and 2012, Pew says, they were targeted for harassment in 151 countries—three-quarters of the world’s states. Similar findings are reported by the Vatican, Newsweek, the Economist, and the 60-year-old Christian support group Open Doors. Most people in the West are unaware of
