WASHINGTON — VA Secretary Eric Shinseki issued a message to veterans Thursday defending his leadership and promising to fix delays in care that have rocked his agency and the Obama administration in recent days. The 71-year-old head of the Department of Veterans Affairs, the second largest federal agency, is resisting calls for his resignation. Shinseki used the narrative posted on the VA website to tout several accomplishments during his nearly six years of leadership. He noted that allegations of VA employees´ misconduct have surfaced over the last several weeks, beginning with scheduling delays at the Phoenix VA and said that if found to

Islamic extremists are overrunning major cities in Iraq that U.S. forces liberated at the cost of American lives. Children from Central America are pouring illegally into America in numbers that far exceed our capacity to deal with them. Veterans are dying because they can’t get medical treatment. What do these developments have in common? No reasonable American can possibly think they are desirable. trivial, or unrelated to action (or inaction) by the Obama administration. This distinguishes them from, say, the Bergdahl deal. Although I have strongly criticized the deal, it is not beyond the bounds of reason to believe that the release

It could easily be mistaken for preparations for a presidential campaign event. The sign were hung just so. An advance team has scouted out the location. Local police officers have been requested. Officials were weighing the all-important decisions about where to put all the TV cameras and how to manage the lines of eager well-wishers. All the presidential-style activity is for the next stop on the Hillary Clinton book tour for “Hard Choices.” At the sprawling Costco in Arlington, Va., store employees are preparing for her arrival Saturday to sign 1,000 books in two hours.

The sprawling San Antonio Military Medical Center where freed prisoner of war Bowe Bergdahl will soon make his return to the United States is no stranger to healing the mental wounds of those who have gone through traumatic experiences abroad. Bergdahl, a U.S. Army sergeant held five years by the Taliban before being freed on May 31, has left a U.S. military hospital in Germany en route to San Antonio, where he will arrive on Friday for further treatment, a Pentagon spokesman said on Thursday. The initial elation that greeted news of Bergdahl´s release from captivity has been tempered after

Families of the people on Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 are being paid $50,000 a person from the airline´s insurers as interim compensation, a Malaysian official said. Some of the families have already received the money, said Hamzah Zainuddin, deputy minister for foreign affairs, who is the head of a Malaysian government-appointed committee to oversee the needs of the next of kin of the 239 people on Flight 370. The final payment hasn´t been decided, and it could be the subject of a legal battle between the families, the airline and Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, according to some experts.

Of course it isn’t yet clear what Eric Cantor’s stunning and decisive defeat at the hands of an unknown challenger with one twentieth the campaign funds means for direction the House GOP. On domestic issues, including immigration, Cantor has been a chameleon—an establishment figure, a reformer, a “young gun,” a Tea Party insurgent with legislative tactician skills, a supporter of immigration reform (aka amnesty), and then a professed opponent of the same immigration reform. (I should note there was a time, in the 1990s, when immigration “reform” meant tightening the borders and tinkering with the legal immigration system so it

One of the five senior Taliban leaders transferred to Qatar in exchange for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl played a key role in al Qaeda’s plans leading up to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Mohammad Fazl, who served as the Taliban’s army chief of staff and deputy defense minister prior to his detention at Guantánamo, did not have a hand in planning the actual 9/11 hijackings. Along with a notorious al Qaeda leader, however, Fazl did help coordinate a military offensive against the enemies of the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan the day before. Let’s just say that the Iraq army isn’t exactly anchoring a democratic awakening in Middle East. Earlier this week, Iraq’s armed forces in Mosul – trained and supplied by United States to secure the wellbeing of its people and institutions – reportedly dropped their guns, shed their uniforms, and surrendered to black-flag waving Sunni insurgents in a mere four days. No Thermopylae here. And around a half a million civilians have left the second largest city in Iraq to flee what is surely going to become a hotbed of beheadings and other assorted acts of Jihad. And now, according to CNN,

Bloodthirsty al Qaeda-inspired insurgents moved dangerously close to Baghdad on Thursday, after capturing major cities in northern Iraq and threatening to destabilize the entire oil-rich region. The desperate Iraqi government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki called for citizens in the predominantly Shiite capital to take up arms against the approaching Sunni insurgents. Thousands of men, young and old, have been flooding into army recruiting stations, vowing to defend Baghdad against fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, who were just 80 miles outside the capital, Iraqi state TV reported. President Obama on Thursday pledged to help the besieged Iraqi government.

The climate change crusaders, who have been at it for a quarter-century, appear to be going clinically mad. Start with the rhetorical monotony and worship of authority (“97 percent of all scientists agree!”), add the Salem witch trial-style intimidation and persecution of dissenters, and the categorical demand that debate about science or policy is over because the matter is settled, and you have the profile of a cult-like sectarianism that has descended into paranoia and reflexive bullying. Never mind the scattered and not fully suppressed findings of climate scientists that the narrative of catastrophic global warming is overstated, like nearly

Let’s play a parlor game. Quick: What words come to mind when you think of the House political leadership? For John Boehner, you’d probably say “country club” or “insider.” Paul Ryan would conjure up “wonk” or “budget.” “Motherhood” or “pro-life” would suffice for Cathy McMorris Rodgers. What about Eric Cantor? He’s the second-most powerful Republican congressman and, before Tuesday, was likely the next speaker of the House of Representatives. Yet adjectives and nouns don’t exactly plummet from the clouds when his name is mentioned. And while you might dislike Boehner’s or Ryan’s personas, they at least have public identities that they’ve owned

It’s that time of year again, when the Supreme Court wraps up its term ahead of the summer and court watchers anxiously await decisions in the year’s major cases. But some of the court’s biggest cases have yet to be decided. Between now and June 26, the Supreme Court will rule on issues from the Affordable Care Act to abortion clinic protections to

The Islamic State of Iraq and greater Syria (ISIS) is shredding Iraq. After seizing the northern city of Mosul on Monday, on Tuesday ISIS stormed down Iraq’s route 1 highway to take Tikrit. BOSTON — Once fearing he would be viewed as "a loser for life" if he failed to win the presidency, Mitt Romney is trying to re-emerge as a force in Republican politics. Romney has quietly sought kingmaker status in the GOP´s fight for the Senate majority this fall and its quest to retake the White House in 2016. The effort at revival is fueling whispers about a third presidential run. But those closest to Romney suggest he´s more interested in shaping party politics by lending his name and record-breaking fundraising machine to what he considers the next generation of electable conservatives. After praising the school’s focus on career-centered education and encouraging graduates to give back to their communities, Mr. Obama addressed the rising cost of higher education, blasting Senate Republicans for stalling a Democrat-backed bill that would allow borrowers

Chelsea Clinton earned an annual salary of $600,000 at NBC News before switching to a month-to-month contract earlier this year, sources with knowledge of the agreement told POLITICO. Clinton, who joined NBC News as a “special correspondent” in November 2011, was up for renewal or non-renewal this year. Instead, the sources said, the network decided to keep her on the payroll on a month-to-month basis so that the two parties could sever ties if Clinton’s mother, Hillary, runs for president. Kamyl Bazbaz, a spokesperson for the 34-year-old Clinton, referred POLITICO to NBC News, which declined to discuss Clinton’s contract. “We don’t comment
