Prison For D’Souza,
Beach Time For Corzine

Federalist, by Mollie Hemingway

Original Article

Conservative author Dinesh D’Souza pleaded guilty to breaking campaign finance laws. He was accused of having urged two friends to make $10,000 contributions to a Senate candidate and then reimbursing them. This is an illegal work-around of campaign contribution limits. He won’t be sentenced until Sept. 23 but faces 16 months in prison and a $30,000 fine. So a guy does something wrong and pleads guilty. What’s the big deal? Well, there’s the ridiculosity (that’s a word, right?) of such campaign finance laws and the pretty serious looming sentence for the crime. Prison. I should probably mention at this point that D’Souza really, really,

I am all for following the rule of the law but it must be applied to all of us equally. If it is not, there is no justice and we are at the mercy of the rich and powerful.

Hillary Clinton, for Richer or Poorer

News is surprise. The news out of Hillary Clinton´s book tour is that it hasn´t gone well. It was supposed to establish her iconic position in American political life while solidifying her inevitability. Instead it exposed vulnerabilities. The media was neither at her feet nor at her throat but largely distanced, which was interesting. Her claim that the Clintons were "dead broke" when they left the White House inspired widespread derision. Her exchanges on Benghazi didn´t bury the issue but kept it alive. The scripted answers were tiring. The old trick of answering the question you wish you´d been asked instead

The White House announced Thursday that it will impose further penalties against Uganda after its president signed a law that toughens punishments against gays and defines some homosexual acts as crimes punishable by life in prison. The admnistration will prevent Ugandan officials involved in serious human rights abuses, including against LGBT individuals, into the United States; discontinue or redirect money for certain programs involving the Ugandan Police Force, Ministry of Health and National Public Health Institute; and cancel plans to hold a U.S. military-sponsored aviation exercise in Uganda

Chelsea Clinton earned an annual salary of $600,000 at NBC News before switching to a month-to-month contract earlier this year, sources with knowledge of the agreement told POLITICO. Clinton, who joined NBC News as a “special correspondent” in November 2011, was up for renewal or non-renewal this year. Instead, the sources said, the network decided to keep her on the payroll on a month-to-month basis so that the two parties could sever ties if Clinton’s mother, Hillary, runs for president. Kamyl Bazbaz, a spokesperson for the 34-year-old Clinton, referred POLITICO to NBC News, which declined to discuss Clinton’s contract. “We don’t comment

The VA Scandal Is a Crisis of Leadership

The Veterans Administration scandal involves charges of manipulation and falsification of medical waiting lists and systemwide rigging to hide delayed or inadequate treatment, which may have caused the deaths of some of those waiting for care. There are whistle-blowers, allegations of local coverups, and the possibility of criminal charges. Also becoming clearer are two motives for those involved in what appears to have been a racket: their compensation and their career trajectories. This scandal won´t go away as others have, because all America is united in this thought: We care about our military veterans. We´ve asked a great deal of them,

Amid all of Chris Christie’s woes, Jeb Bush is increasingly being talked about as the Republican establishment’s top choice for the 2016 presidential nomination. There’s just that one minor problem identified by Bush’s own mother: America may not be ready for yet another Bush, given how swimmingly things turned out the last time around. Well, Jeb Bush already seems to be laying the groundwork for addressing that problem, by letting the world know that there is a crucial difference between him and his older brother George. Swiss group to allow assisted dying

A Swiss organisation that helps people take their own lives has voted to extend its services to elderly people who are not terminally ill. Exit added "suicide due to old age" to their statutes at an annual general meeting held over the weekend, allowing people suffering from psychological or physical problems associated with old age the choice to end their life. Assisted dying is legal in Switzerland and technically even a healthy young person could use such services. However, organisations involved in this work set their own internal requirements, which differ from group to group.

In “The Case for Reparations,” the long-brewing cover story of the June issue of the Atlantic, Ta-Nehisi Coates makes a painstaking argument that the gap in wealth, achievement, and a wide range of health and wellbeing outcomes between black and white Americans is the result of deliberate policy decisions. Those decisions, he says, lead to an inevitable conclusion: “An America that asks what it owes its most vulnerable citizens is improved and humane. An America that looks away is ignoring not just the sins of the past but the sins of the present and the certain sins of the future,”

HARRISBURG, Pa. (KDKA/AP) – Pennsylvania’s governor says he won’t appeal a court decision that struck down the state’s gay marriage ban. Gov. Tom Corbett’s decision Wednesday means that same-sex marriage will remain legal in Pennsylvania, without the threat that a higher court will reinstate the ban. On Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge John Jones III struck down Pennsylvania’s 1996 law banning recognition of gay marriage, calling it unconstitutional. Corbett released a statement saying: “I have thoroughly reviewed Judge Jones’ opinion in the Whitewood case. Given the high legal threshold set forth by Judge Jones in this case, the case is

Sarah Palin wants to impeach Barack Obama. In an op-ed article published last week, the former Republican vice presidential nominee declared that the crisis on the southern border (where young illegal immigrants are being detained) "is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ´No, mas´." The Republican Speaker of the House, John Boehner, thinks that´s loco. (Technically, he said, "I disagree".) For Republicans hoping to avoid the kind of drama that might derail what looks to be a very good midterm election year, this kind of call is both a nuisance and a trend.
