More Hispanics Declaring Themselves White
New York Times, by Nate Cohen

Original Article

Hispanics are often described as driving up the nonwhite share of the population. But a new study of census forms finds that more Hispanics are identifying as white. An estimated net 1.2 million Americans of the 35 million Americans identified in 2000 as of “Hispanic, Latino or Spanish origin,” as the census form puts it, changed their race from “some other race” to “white” between the 2000 and 2010 censuses, according to research presented at an annual meeting of the Population Association of America and reported by Pew Research. The researchers, who have not yet published their findings, compared individual

It´s a start. Now if they start declaring themselves Republican, or even better, conservative, the Old Gray Lady may implode/explode all over 43rd Street.

News to NYT. Many Hispanics are white. Rita Hayworth was Hispanic, so is Charlie Sheen and Martin Sheen. Why should Hispanics get their own category, and Italians or Greeks or Bulgarians not? It makes no sense.

I wonder how many American are self-identifying themselves as "human"?

That is my go-to answer when I am asked about race. When I´m asked about my ethnicity, I clearly state "Texan". The language I speak is Texan (I do not sound anything like an English person).

to previous points, esp #2 there is a difference and I struggle to say it nicely.
The Poles, Russians, Filipinos, Cambodians, and Serbs that I know, came to America to become unhyphenated Americans. They learned English quickly and used it at home. Yes, the Greeks still send the kids to Greek school on Saturday, but that is about the only exception (outside the Muslims, which is a separate issue).
But many of the Hispanics that I know, not so much. I´ve encountered those whose grandparents came here, yet still do not consider themselves Americans and scorn the use of English.
There is also the matter of class structure in the "old" country. Have, again, encountered those who are for most purposes Castilian Spanish in genetics and consider themselves white. Others who are primarily (75 per cent or more) of "indio" origin, who have a different take on things and want to reclaim long-lost Aztlan. And do not want to self-identify with the despised conquerors of Europe. And will not call themselves ´white´, not ever. Some still - even in the US - speak at home the old pre-Columbian tongues.
Not a simple situation. Classing all "Hispanics" as a lump is, well, racist in fact: treating someone as a group member rather than an individual.

For those who didn´t click through and read the entire article. Here are the last two short paragraphs:

The results are a strong sign that fears of a unique “Hispanic challenge,” where Hispanics immigrants might remain as a permanent Spanish-speaking underclass, are overblown.

In that regard, the census numbers are not new: There is mounting evidence that Hispanics are succeeding in American society at a pace similar to that of prior waves of European immigrants.

Ditto #12. I lived in South Texas (Corpus Christi) nearly 20 years and there the old line Hispanics who had been there several generations usually refer to themselves as "Tejano," which roughly means "Texan of Spanish origin." Except for the fact their names often end in the letter ´z´ you can distinguish them from Gringos.
And they do tend to be conservatives -- mostly because they own enough to want to conserve it!

President Barack Obama tried to fend off criticism of his Iraq policy, as that country fell into the clutches of a terrorist army this week, by insisting that he was considering "all the options" for a response. "I don´t rule out anything," he said. Of course he doesn´t. The essence of postmodernism--of which this president is the political fulfillment--are a profound moral relativism, a habitual flexibility, a hermeneutical hanging-out. Yet what it mean to consider "all the options"? The president uses that phrase to suggest that he has not ruled out military force. He said much the same thing about

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says Iraq’s government must make a sincere effort to address sectarian differences, or else U.S. military help won’t succeed in curbing the insurgency there. He says, quote, “We can’t do it for them.” Obama says the U.S. won’t send troops back into Iraq. But he says he’s asked his national security team to prepare a range of other options. He says he’ll review those options in the coming days. Obama says the risk posed by terrorists in Iraq could eventually pose a threat to U.S. interests, too. And how can it address the problem of growth without addressing the collapse of the dollar? And how can address the collapse of the dollar without addressing a debt ceiling that Mr. Cantor kept voting to raise? These are questions that were well marked by
