Self-inflicted wounds:
White House flails on VA mess

New York Post, by John Podhoretz

My nephew once told me his grandmother had bought him a gun but told him he wasn’t allowed to use it to kill anything that wasn’t already dead. He was 5 at the time. He’s now 17 and says he’s in high school, but I suspect he may have secretly gone to work for the Obama administration’s damage-control team. Who else could have come up with the White House strategy to deal with the damaging revelations about the health-care system for America’s veterans — which was to make a big public show of firing someone who had already retired? This is the perfect

Obama’s Silence Amid VA Crisis
Raises the Stakes for Democrats

It’s rare, in the epicenter of partisan national politics, for a scandal implicating one of the political parties to unfold in slow motion. But that’s what has happened in Washington since charges of misconduct at the Department of Veterans Affairs were raised last month. That may explain the White House’s somewhat muted response – President Barack Obama hasn’t publicly addressed the issue since April 28, when he was asked about it during a trip to Asia. It’s become clear in recent days, however, that leaders on both sides of the aisle have woken up to the potential political fallout of the VA

The first good thing to happen to the Republican Party on May 13 was that Tea Party candidate Ben Sasse and establishment candidate Thom Tillis each won by large margins in their Senate primaries in Nebraska and North Carolina. The second good thing was that on the issues it was so hard to tell them apart. Establishment candidate Tillis had a strong and solid conservative record, and Sasse had a more-than-establishment resume, having been an assistant secretary of Health and Human Services in the George W. Bush administration and gone to Oxford, Harvard and Yale. To add to the mix, Sasse´s establishment

Meet a Senator With Six Figures
Banked—Who Still Has Student Debt

Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut likes to talk about his student debt. He brings it up when Congress debates student loans, as it did last summer. He brings it up now, as Senate Democrats push legislation to address skyrocketing debt. What he doesn’t talk much about is his bank account with six figures on deposit—ostensibly enough to pay off his loans, according to newly released Senate financial disclosures. Murphy, a freshman Democrat and former House member, lists outstanding educational loans of $15,001 to $50,000 for himself and $15,001 to $50,000 for his wife, disclosures show. The documents also indicate the senator has

A leading African American member of Congress from Illinois condemned the Chicago Sun-Times for running an “over the top” column last month that compared black Republican voters to Jews who collaborated with the Nazis. Democratic Rep. Danny Davis told the Washington Free Beacon on Tuesday that the piece by Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg was surprising, “inaccurate,” and “over the top.” Steinberg’s piece sparked a row in the Jewish and black communities last month after Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn’s reelection campaign tweeted—and then quietly deleted—several messages praising the article and encouraging followers to read it.

Plausible deniability is the order of the day at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Everything the administration does is coldly calculated to foster the impression that President Obama is author of all that is good and entirely blameless when things go wrong (as they often do). When 40 veterans died waiting to see a doctor at Veterans Affairs hospitals in Arizona, the White House insisted they were so disengaged from the scandal that they only knew what had happened after turning on the evening news. “We learned about them through the reports,” said White House spokesman Jay Carney. “That’s when we learned about

I am an undocumented American. I’m only doing the jobs that illegal aliens can’t be bothered doing, because they’re either on the dole or working under the table. Working, as Jeb Bush might say, is an act of love for my family. They love to eat, and nobody’s going to give them an EBT card, or a MassHealth card, like the one that Matthew Denice’s drunken illegal-alien killer was carrying so he could get better health care than an American veteran. As a former resident of the Un-American, I mean All-America City, I am proud that Mayor Joseph Curtatone is leading the

ST. LOUIS - Dr. Jose Mathews says he’s paying the price for being a whistle-blower at the VA hospital in St. Louis. He didn’t hold back as he told his story to KMOX. Mathews was head of psychiatry at the VA before he came forward to say that doctors were treating only half the mental health patients they had the capacity to handle. After, he says he was promptly removed from his position and specifically instructed not to contact any of the psychiatrists he was leading. But even though he was re-located to a basement office, Mathews continues going to

Tuesday was a great night for incumbents, the GOP establishment and self-funders. It was a bad night to be a Clinton in-law. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell defeated his GOP challenger in Kentucky by 25 points, a high-profile but low-suspense race on a critical primary day when voters cast ballots in six states. In Georgia, a Senate Republican primary headed to a runoff with the two candidates favored by GOP establishment leaders. And in Oregon, pediatric neurosurgeon Monica Wehby fended off a more conservative challenger in her Republican primary.

Evidence of the barbaric treatment of America’s retired armed forces personnel in the Veterans Health Administration system grows by the hour. Atop word last month that 40 vets died awaiting care in Phoenix, Sunday’s Dayton Daily News, reported that “The number of dead veterans could total more than 1,100 from 2001 through the first half of 2013” due to faulty treatment and waiting endless months for VA medical care. West Virginia VA psychiatrist Dr. Margaret Moxness told Fox & Friends Monday that two of her new patients committed suicide while waiting months for second visits. Meanwhile, VA personnel in 19

San Antonio failed to properly spend funds approved by Congress to combat the housing crisis while President Barack Obama’s expected nominee to run the Housing and Urban Development Department was mayor of the city, according to a 2012 report from the agency’s inspector general. San Antonio was awarded $8.6 million from HUD in 2008 as part of the national Neighborhood Stabilization

Below we give you the six most important things to watch: 1. Who will make the Republican runoff for U.S. Senate in Georgia? In the wildly unpredictable and increasingly nasty Georgia Senate race, there´s only been one certainty the

Karl Rove created a stir with his recent suggestion that former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton may have suffered traumatic brain injury in December 2012. Speaking at a conference in California, he noted, “Thirty days in the hospital? And when she reappears, she’s wearing glasses that are only for people who have traumatic brain injury? We need to know what’s up with that.” Let’s ignore the media hyperventilating and look at what Rove actually suggested. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, traumatic brain injury, or TBI, “occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain.” Secretary Clinton reportedly

President Barack Obama first learned of the scandal involving Department of Veterans Affairs hospital administrators concealing the true wait times vets faced in the press, according to a claim made by White House Press Sec. Jay Carney on Monday. While the president may have not been aware of the falsified wait lists, however, reports indicate that his administration was informed of excessive wait times at the VA as early as 2008. Obama even campaigned on the issue of VA waiting lists in 2007. “When was the president first made aware of these problems?” CNN reporter Jim Acosta asked. “These fraudulent

With the latest Benghazi! ™ extravaganza about to begin, the Democrats are faced with a dilemma. Should they boycott the silly hearings, thus leaving the Republicans to put on their pageant unimpeded, or should they join in with a full panel and add legitimacy to the process? The problem seems to be that whether they like it or not, these hearings are going to be covered. And if the press reaction so far tells us anything, they are looking for a show. This is why they should follow the advice of Ari Rabin-Havt in the American Prospect who says that

Brown reasserted that rising sea levels may precipitate the relocation of Los Angeles International airport (LAX). "We´ve got to deal with it. We´ve already appropriated $600 million. According to the study, commissioned by the university, the library would create 1,900 permanent new jobs. In addition, the report said, construction of the library would have a $600 million economic impact on the city and create 3,280 local jobs over the course of the construction period.
