Obamacare’s big opening day
touted one enrollment: report

Washington Times, by Cheryl K. Chumley

Original Article

Only one person successfully enrolled in Obamacare on its first day of business, a nonprofit government watchdog group found via documents obtained from a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit. Judicial Watch issued a 106-page report based on the documents it received after suing the Department of Health and Human Services — a case initiated to find out just how badly the enrollment process went. The report found how there were 43,208 accounts created on day one of Obamacare, but only one that was successfully completed. And that just shows how bug-ridden and convoluted the enrollment process was, despite the White House mantra

BAGHDAD — Residents of a religiously mixed town in northern Iraq fled for their lives into the desert on Monday after al-Qaeda renegades stormed in, and Secretary of State John F. Kerry said U.S. drone strikes “may well be” an option to help stop the insurgents’ advances. In an interview with Yahoo! News, Kerry said the radical Islamist fighters sweeping through northern Iraq post “an existential challenge” to the country and threaten the stability of the region. He said President Obama was thoroughly considering “every option that is available,” including drone strikes, and he stressed that “we are deeply committed

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been photographed taking a ride on the pride of his navy - an aging submarine. Photos appeared on state television of the dictator posing on the galley of the submarine´s conning tower, meeting the ship´s crew and apparently directing naval manoeuvres. South Korea´s government expressed surprise at the move as the pictures clearly showed the inside of one of the North´s most powerful ships. The South´s Yonhap News Agency said the "rusty, green submarine" was thought to be a 1,800-ton Soviet-built Romeo-class vessel, built in the 1950s. Pictures of the side of the conning tower showed what looked

The man who led the charge to have Eric H. Holder Jr. held in contempt of Congress is on a new crusade: to impeach the nation’s first black attorney general. “There’s a total disregard for the rule of law,” Rep. Paul A. Gosar, Arizona Republican, told The Washington Times. “We can’t sit idly by here as we see the Constitution and justice being defamed right and left at the whim of the attorney general.” Mr. Gosar’s list of what he says are constitutional violations includes the Justice Department giving the Obama administration permission to ignore the requirement of notifying Congress before transferring

Your first thought might well be, “Why do we need that? Liberalism is ruining America every day.” Point well taken, but that’s because you have absorbed the idea that “liberalism” means ever-expanding government that takes more and more of our income, spends it on thousands of wasteful special interest programs, and increasingly controls our lives. You think that “liberalism” means living under the heels of Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and their bureaucratic minions. There certainly is nothing to celebrate in that. But that conception of liberalism is an Orwellian perversion: war is peace, freedom is slavery, and now liberalism means omnipotent government. The

LONDON — Secretary of State John Kerry said on Friday that sexual violence in conflict zones should be banished “to the dark ages and the history books,” as he joined dozens of ministers and the actress Angelina Jolie to promote efforts to bring perpetrators of such crimes to justice. Mr. Kerry spoke at the end of a four-day conference in London designed to support victims and bring to account those responsible for rape and sexual violence that has scarred conflicts from the Balkans to Africa. “Sexual violence in conflict is one of the most persistent and neglected injustices imaginable, and ending this

The Obama administration is urgently considering an air assault on Islamic extremists that officials told the Guardian could be directed at targets in Syria as well as Iraq. President Obama announced on Friday that in the "days ahead" he will decide on a package of military and diplomatic options to halt the rapid advance of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isis), as the jihadist army´s march from Syria through Sunni Iraq has upended Obama´s achievement of extricating the US military from the Iraq conflict. Obama has ruled out sending US soldiers and marines back to the Iraqi

Baghdad, Iraq— Islamist rebel fighters captured two more Iraqi towns overnight in a relentless sweep south towards the capital Baghdad in a campaign to recreate a medieval caliphate carved out of fragmenting Iraq and Syria. U.S. President Barack Obama threatened military strikes against the radical Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant on Thursday, highlighting the gravity of ISIL´s threat to redraw borders in an oil-rich region with the risk of any new entity turning into a launch-pad for attacks on Western interests. In the spreading chaos, Iraqi Kurdish forces seized control of Kirkuk - an oil hub just outside their

A dozen years ago, Congress authorized President George W. Bush to invade Iraq to prevent the regime of then-dictator Saddam Hussein from posing a threat to this country with weapons of mass destruction we later discovered he did not have. In his second inaugural address in 2005, Bush described the broader utopian vision motivating his foreign policy. "So it is the policy of the United States to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world," Bush said. The Senate on Wednesday voted not to move forward on a bill from Sen. Elizabeth Warren that would have allowed an estimated 25 million with older student loans to refinance that loan debt at current, lower interest rates. President Barack Obama and second lady Jill Biden had thrown their support behind the bill in recent days, and Obama on Monday rolled out new executive actions to help address student loan debt alongside the action in the Senate. But Warren’s bill sparked a fierce debate in the Senate, where Republicans said Democrats are cynically capitalizing on student loan debt for election-year gains. “I’ve

There is a lot of talk about Hillary Clinton lately, but that´s not helping the public´s opinion of her, according to a new Gallup poll. While a majority of Americans continue to have a favorable opinion of her, it´s been on the steady decline since 2012 when it hit 66 percent. Now, 54 percent view her favorably, which is down from 59 percent in February. Her favorability rating is the lowest it´s been since Aug. 2008 (54 percent), when she was gearing up to speak at the Democratic National Convention and endorse then-Sen. Barack Obama for the 2008 presidential nomination.

At the end of the Civil War, but before the pernicious reach of Jim Crow undermined the Union Army’s battlefield victory, former slaves and free blacks found themselves in possession of a most precious right -- the right to vote. It didn’t matter if a man had been a war hero in the famed, all-black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment or a house servant in a Southern plantation. All that mattered was that he was a man. To say that this development didn’t sit well with the progressive-minded women of this country is an understatement. By 10 p.m. on Sept. 11, 2012, when Hillary Clinton received a call from President Obama, she was one of the most thoroughly briefed officials in Washington on the unfolding disaster in Benghazi, Libya. (Snip) She had no doubt that a terrorist attack had been launched against America on the anniversary of 9/11. However, when Hillary picked up the phone and heard Obama’s voice, she learned the president had other ideas in mind. With less than two months before Election Day, he was still boasting that he had al?Qaeda on the run. If the truth about Benghazi became known, it would blow that argument out of the water.

I still think President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, even though for 14 years he allowed his literary agent to circulate a bio blurb stating he was born in Kenya, and even though for many years he attended a church where his pastor friend shouted such things as “God damn America!” I still think that he just pretended to be Kenyan to be cool, to sell books and, perhaps, to get a foreign student scholarship at those colleges from which he refuses to release his transcripts. He’s probably not actually Kenyan. But as I speculated

There are times that I have senior moments and forget certain names and events but after the recent Obama Iraq war implosion, I´m convinced most political pundits are suffering from them as well. What is unusual is that this revision of history is being committed by conservatives who should know better. Recent commentary by Glenn Beck, George Will and Charles Krauthammer indicate that they have significant memory lapses about why we went to war in Iraq. They now suggest that it was a wrong decision whereas my complaint is that we took too long to invade and oust Saddam Hussein.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) cancelled its longtime relationship with an email-storage contractor just weeks after ex-IRS official Lois Lerner’s computer crashed and shortly before other IRS officials’ computers allegedly crashed. The IRS signed a contract with Sonasoft, an email-archiving company based in San Jose, California, each year from 2005 to 2010. The company, which partners with Microsoft and counts The New York Times among its clients, claims in its company slogans that it provides “Email Archiving Done Right” and “Point-Click Recovery.” Sonasoft in 2009 tweeted, “If the IRS uses Sonasoft products to backup their servers why wouldn’t you choose

All the time I was growing up in Atlanta, the face of Robert E. Lee was taking shape on the side of an enormous granite mountain just outside town. He loomed like a god above us, as much a presence as any deity, and God knows he was accepted as such. It was only much later that I began to question his sanctity, and then to hate what he stood for. When I was in elementary school, the face of Lee on Stone Mountain was a rough-cut thing, weathering and wasting as the generation that began it in 1912—a generation

The decision this past week by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to rescind federal trademark protections for the Redskins may ultimately tip the balance in the controversy over the 80-year-old name of Washington’s football team. If so, that would be a shame. Not because there’s insufficient reason to consider the name “disparaging to Native Americans,” as the patent office determined. Many of us recoil at the reference to skin color as a team identity. The problem is that the Redskins case is just the latest example of a federal agency going beyond its brief to inappropriately insert itself in

US Secretary of State John Kerry has arrived in Iraq´s capital, Baghdad as Sunni insurgents expand their control of towns across north-western Iraq. In Egypt on Sunday, Mr Kerry warned that Sunni militants Isis´ "ideology of violence and repression is a threat not only to Iraq but to the entire region". On Sunday rebels--spearheaded by Isis militants--captured border crossings to Syria and Jordan. The strategically important airport in the northern Tal Afar has also fallen. The town controls the main road from the Syrian border to Mosul, Iraq´s second biggest city, which was captured by the rebels two weeks ago.

With much of the Obama administration´s foreign policy in tatters, John Kerry is clear on at least one goal he hopes to achieve by the end of his time as secretary of state: having lesbian, bisexual, and transgender ambassadors representing the United States. In remarks to a GLIFAA (formerly Gays and Lesbians in Foreign Affairs Agencies) Pride event in the Ben Franklin Room at the State Department, the secretary ran through a litany of accomplishments by the Obama administration that benefit the "LGBT/gay community." The least loved institution in America today is the U.S. Senate, and one of the reasons it is reviled is a zero-sum approach to women´s medical care. It´s time we changed that and adopt modern policies that make sense instead of using women´s medical issues as an election-year power play. One of the most rational ways for Washington to break this gridlock is to approve oral contraception for over-the-counter purchases by adults. Since "the pill" was first approved 44 years ago, it´s been one of the most proven and tested pharmaceuticals of our time. It is safe, reliable, effective, and presents
