Paterson — The cost of assigning special fire watch officers to International High School continues to climb even though state officials say they completed work on a requisite smoke control system seven months ago. So far, the New Jersey Schools Development Authority (SDA) says it has spent $444,027 on the fire watch officers over a span of more than five years. The officers were assigned to the school as one of the conditions for the temporary certificate of occupancy that allowed International’s new building to open in September 2008 even though its smoke control system was not done. Reminds me of a retired small city firefighter telling me how much it costs for schools making him come in to teach little ditties/songs to first graders. Teachers should do it but it´s a requirement that a city fireman had to do it. Ka-Ching!

NEW YORK — Target is asking its customers to not bring firearms into its stores, even where it is allowed by law. In a statement posted Wednesday on the retailer´s corporate blog, interim CEO John Mulligan said that Target wants a "safe and inviting" atmosphere for its shoppers and employees. "Bringing firearms to Target creates an environment that is at odds with the family-friendly shopping and work experience we strive to create," he said. (Snip) A group called Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America gathered nearly 400,000 signatures for a petition asking Target to prohibit shoppers from carrying guns

As the investigation into the Bourbon Street shooting continued Tuesday, police confirmed that six of the victims were visitors from out of state, including a woman from Australia. NOPD spokeswoman Hilal Williams sent out a press release shortly before 2:30 p.m., which included a change in what authorities had previously said - that six of the victims were women and four were men. But victim nr. 7, who police previously identified as a woman, is in fact a 22-year-old New Orleans man, who was treated and has since been released from the hospital. The wounded included a 21-year-old woman

New Orleans is among the most risky real estate markets in the country when looking at the biggest gains and losses homeowners have experienced over the past three decades, Bloomberg reported recently. Bloomberg and real estate website Zillow.com analyzed data from 1979 through last year to find the biggest swings in home values. In the New Orleans market, which ranked the 15th most risky, a homeowner carries a 22 percent risk holding on to a house for five years, according to the report. The city´s worst year was 1987-1988 when values fell 7.2 percent; the city´s biggest gains were 2012-2013

With its finances in the red and its role sharply curtailed, questions are being raised about the long-term future of the agency that put New Jersey on the map of big-time sports. But no matter what its fate, the hard truth is that the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which once netted tens of millions of dollars annually from The Meadowlands Racetrack and Giants Stadium, will likely be a lingering financial liability for state taxpayers. A series of decisions by officials over time have left it marooned, with significant structural costs and little means to pay for them

It has been six weeks since the city turned off Nicole Hill´s water. Dirty dishes are piled in the sink of her crowded kitchen, where the yellow-and-green linoleum floor is soiled and sticky. A small garbage can is filled with water from a neighbor, while a bigger one sits outside in the yard, where she hopes it will collect some rain. She´s developed an intricate recycling system of washing the dishes, cleaning the floor and flushing the toilet with the same water. Mr Cameron made the comments in a preface to a book, "Rainbow over Westminster", which charts the increasing number of MPs who are black or from ethnic minority backgrounds. In the preface, Mr Cameron said that the book “serves as a reminder – that there is much more to be done. “Our Parliament is still nowhere near representative enough of

A failing hospital has paid at least 10 senior managers more than £200,000 a year despite providing unsafe care. An investigation by The Telegraph can disclose that Medway Foundation trust has hired more than 30 interim managers on six-figure packages over the past few months. The highest paid is receiving up to £540,000 a year. However, the hospital is about to be rated “inadequate” by regulators – the worst possible level – and even its own reports admit the trust needs 120 more nurses to provide patients with safe care. Once at the site of the one of the most important transgender riots in U.S. history, city officials unveiled a street sign honoring the late Vicki Marlane, one of San Francisco´s legendary performers. The Board of Supervisors in April approved a resolution to recognize the pioneer, who died of an AIDS-related illness in 2011.

A government-contracted security force threatened to arrest doctors and nurses if they divulged any information about the contagion threat at a refugee camp housing illegal alien children at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, sources say. In spite of the threat, several former camp workers broke their confidentiality agreements and shared exclusive details with me about the dangerous conditions at the camp. They said taxpayers deserve to know about the contagious diseases and the risks the children pose to Americans. I have agreed to not to disclose their identities because they fear retaliation and prosecution.

A crowd of 300 angry protestors forced three buses carrying 140 undocumented migrant children and their parents to turn around in Murrieta, California, on Tuesday after they blocked the road. The dramatic confrontation between the flag waving protestors and the Homeland Security buses came one day after Mayor Alan Long urged residents to resist the federal government´s plan to transfer the Central American migrants to California to ease overcrowding of facilities along the Texas-Mexico border. Holding up banners that said ´Return to Sender´ and suggesting the children should be sent to the White House instead, the irate protestors succeeded when the buses

"Don´t worry friends, it was a gag gift," Jarrett wrote, pivoting to some White House messaging about the economy. "Us strong women don´t need worship," she continued, "just an economy for the 21st century. #WomenSucceed." Business Insider directly

St. Claire Shores, MI -The feminists hadn’t shown up yet, but they could, at any moment, with their protest signs and screaming. The threat of them was an infuriating and exhilarating specter throughout the weekend, a symbol of the oppression facing the men’s rights activists who had gathered to meet for their inaugural conference. Early Friday before the opening session, a wispy trail of men — mostly white, college-through-retirement-age — waited for the doors to open outside of this Veterans of Foreign Wars outpost in suburban Detroit. One man talked about his ex-wife. A lot of guys talked about their ex-wives.
