These Guys Use ´Small Business´ to

Saying that something helps small businesses is a great way to gain public support for your cause. Except when it’s not true. Take, for example, claims about the government-run Export-Import Bank, which subsidizes U.S. exports by providing discount loans to foreign governments and businesses to purchase American goods. According to bank Chairman Fred Hochberg: “Helping small businesses…grow and compete on the global stage is at the heart of the Bank’s mission.” Boosting the fortunes of mom-and-pop businesses certainly sounds noble — and much more likely to win support from Congress. But the real beneficiaries aren’t exactly what most people would consider “small.”

Gun Retailers: Obama
Admin Restricting Business

Gun retailers say the Obama administration is imposing regulations that will put them out of business, the Washington Times reports. The retailers say the administration is choking off their credit lines, freezing their assets, and prohibiting online sales. Since 2011, regulators have increased scrutiny on banks’ customers. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. in 2011 urged banks to better manage the risks of their merchant customers who employ payment processors, such as PayPal, for credit card transactions. The FDIC listed gun retailers as “high risk” along with porn stores and drug paraphernalia shops. Meanwhile, the Justice Department has launched Operation Choke Point, a credit

My Commencement Speech to Rutgers’

Rutgers Did Not Invite Me to Give Its Commencement Speech Today… The university got pretty confused about who would, after Condoleezza Rice declined. Rutgers invited, then disinvited, then re-invited Eric LeGrand, the Rutgers defensive tackle who was paralyzed from the shoulders down in a 2010 football game. LeGrand went on to write two books, become a motivational speaker, and finish his Rutgers degree via Skype. Between inviting and re-inviting LeGrand, Rutgers invited and confirmed the invitation of former New Jersey governor and former head of the 9/11 Commission Tom Kean. So the university has two—and, for all I know, still counting—commencement speakers. But

At the very start of the early New Left- circa the 1964-65 academic year- students at Berkley California started what was called The Free Speech Movement. (FSM) Back in those days, university administrators did not allow early supporters of the Civil Rights movement to try and gather support on campus or solicit donations to various civil rights organizations. The police were called in to arrest the offenders, mass arrests were made, and giant rallies surrounding the Sproul Hall steps had nationwide repercussions, including a backlash to the protests from California residents who backed Governor Ronald Reagan’s measures to reign in

Federal subsidy for Brazilian

Granite manufacturers are one of many U.S. industries struggling to compete with foreign competition -- which makes it odd that the federal government is subsidizing a Brazilian granite project. The Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) is a federal agency that subsidizes U.S. businesses that set up operations in foreign countries. In 2012, OPIC approved a $6 million taxpayer-backed loan to support a U.S. company expanding its Brazilian operation that extracts granite and cuts it into slabs for countertops to ship to the U.S. and other countries. “ ´The more you help these guys produce stuff, the more they ship here.´

fter allowing an anti-Semitic, anti-Israel infection to fester for months, the president of Vassar College has finally taken a stand for academic freedom and decency. That it took a display of actual World War II Nazi propaganda for her to act is appalling. President Catharine Hill slammed the anti-Israel Students for Justice in Palestine after the group attempted to tar pro-Israel advocates by displaying on the Internet a poster created in 1944 to sow anti-American feeling among the Dutch under German rule. The cartoon image, under the heading “Liberators,” shows a monster stomping on a European city while wearing a Star of

Members of the Class of 2014, I salute you. My warmest wishes on the occasion of your graduation from this fine institution. And, before I go any further, I would like to express my personal thanks to all of you for not rescinding my invitation. I know that matters were dicey for a while, given that I have held and defended actual positions on politically contested issues. Now and then I’ve strayed from the party line. And if the demonstrators would quiet down for a moment, I’d like to offer an abject apology for any way in which I have offended

VA Scandals Raise The
Specter Of Healthcare Rationing

Whistleblowers within the Veterans’ Administration health system are coming forward with tales of brutal disregard for the health and life of those who served our country. Allegations of extensive wait times for lifesaving care, deaths while waiting, and horrific mismanagement have triggered outrage. Unfortunately, the VA abuses are just the tip of a much larger, more menacing iceberg. The iceberg is covert health care rationing, and it’s inherent in single-payer systems like the VA. The obvious question to ask about the VA scandal is: Why? Why would a VA hospital administrator direct doctors not to perform colonoscopies until patients had three positive

A headline at the Daily Caller complains: “Principals say Common Core tests make little kids vomit, pee their pants.” Top comedian Louis C.K. shook the educational world with this tweet: “My kids used to love math. Now it makes them cry.” Louis C.K. blamed Common Core. Twitchy.com ran this headline:: “What is Common Core doing to America’s children? Mom shares heartrending photo.” How do our professors work this sick magic? The basic technique is to create garbled problems that have no clear answer. Here is a hypothetical illustration of the basic gimmick: “Tom has six oranges. Mary has five oranges. Mrs. Smith

Retired Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the former Egyptian army chief who ousted Mohammed Morsi and is now running for president, said President Obama could do more to help fight Islamist terrorism. In an exclusive interview with Reuters, al-Sisi was asked if he had a message for Obama. “We are fighting a war against terrorism,” he replied. The White House froze $1.3 billion a year in military aid to Egypt after Moris was ousted in a people’s revolt and the interim government cracked down on the Muslim Brotherhood. “The Egyptian army is undertaking major operations in the Sinai so it is not transformed into

No. No there isn’t. The brilliant writers at Taiwan’s Next Animation Studio have made a name for themselves by creating animated YouTube videos of political and pop culture news stories from America. They’ve lampooned Al Gore’s massage grope controversy, Tiger Woods’ multiple extramarital affairs, and the JetBlue flight attendant meltdown. Now, they’ve turned their sites on Baldwin’s embarrassing arrest earlier this week for bicycling the wrong way down a one way street, and then subsequently mouthing off to New York’s finest. In the Taiwanese Animation video, Baldwin is seen riding a little girl’s pink bike. Baldwin is also seen

Madison, Wis. — In a ruling with stunning implications on political speech in Wisconsin and beyond, the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals declared unconstitutional portions of state campaign finance laws restricting issue advertising. The 88-page decision handed down late Wednesday sides with Wisconsin Right to Life Inc. and its state political action committee, which sued to block the enforcement of multiple state statutes and rules against groups that spend money for political speech independently of candidates and parties — so called issue advocacy groups.

President Barack Obama first learned of the scandal involving Department of Veterans Affairs hospital administrators concealing the true wait times vets faced in the press, according to a claim made by White House Press Sec. Jay Carney on Monday. While the president may have not been aware of the falsified wait lists, however, reports indicate that his administration was informed of excessive wait times at the VA as early as 2008. Obama even campaigned on the issue of VA waiting lists in 2007. “When was the president first made aware of these problems?” CNN reporter Jim Acosta asked. “These fraudulent

The news website Tout Haiti reported last month that two prominent lawyers have petitioned Haiti´s Superior Court of Auditors and Administrative Disputes, demanding an audit of Bill Clinton´s management of the Interim Haiti Recovery Commission (IHRC). Based on my extensive 18-month investigation, it is my professional conclusion that the Internet video known as Innocence of Muslims, the video allegedly responsible for Middle East violence and more importantly, the September 11, 2012 attack in Benghazi that resulted in the death of four Americans can be directly tied to a covert intelligence operation and operational assets of the U.S. Department of Justice. Additionally, the individuals and entities responsible for the Internet promotion of the video of that name can be traced not just to an intelligence operation contemporaneous to the attacks, but to previous events of historical significance and

A study released Monday by the University of Chicago shows that an Obama presidential library located on the South Side of Chicago would pour $220 million into the city’s economy each year. According to the study, commissioned by the university, the library would create 1,900 permanent new jobs. In addition, the report said, construction of the library would have a $600 million economic impact on the city and create 3,280 local jobs over the course of the construction period. TV watchers will recall the familiar advertising trope of yesteryear in which we were told “4 out of 5 dentists [or doctors] recommend” using fluoride toothpaste, aspirin for headaches, or some such. We were always left to wonder whether that fifth doctor was a moron or something, never pausing to consider that the fifth doctor might well recommend the same thing, but emphasize something else first (like flossing perhaps, or Tylenol instead of aspirin because of sensitive stomachs, etc). But Archie Bunker was coming back on the air in 30 seconds, so most of us didn’t follow up on these

Karl Rove created a stir with his recent suggestion that former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton may have suffered traumatic brain injury in December 2012. Speaking at a conference in California, he noted, “Thirty days in the hospital? And when she reappears, she’s wearing glasses that are only for people who have traumatic brain injury? We need to know what’s up with that.” Let’s ignore the media hyperventilating and look at what Rove actually suggested. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, traumatic brain injury, or TBI, “occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain.” Secretary Clinton reportedly
