Zanesville -- Every two weeks, an Ohio man drives 4,200 miles to save unwanted dogs from overpopulated shelters in the South, packs them up in a semitrailer and finds them loving homes in the northeastern United States. Greg Mahle, 51, begins the five-day journey in his Zanesville hometown in eastern Ohio and drives down to Houston. He picks up about 80 dogs there and at stops in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Tennessee. He then takes them to pre-arranged homes in states including Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Vermont. Mahle estimates that he and his Rescue Road Trips company

That is a lovely story. Thanks for posting it.

Our dogs are rescue animals (one at a time, though), but it´s hard to walk through those shelters and choose only one.

God bless him. Every dog should have a lifelong human companion. I have nine rescued huskies, and every day they add value to my life.

I am unaware of the background of all of them, but for some, their start in life was very unpleasant. They seem to know they are now safe and loved, and truly enjoy the life they nearly were denied.

Perhaps it´s time for a visit to the shelter...

We adopted a Coon Hound from Virgina two years ago. You could not ask for a sweeter, more loyal dog. She was captured and taken to a shelter after living in the woods of Virgina for what the shelter people calculated was about two years. She had healed scars on her ears which they said looked like she was in a fight with a wildcat. She also had buckshot in one of her flanks. My daughter, who was attending college in Williamsburgh at the time went to the shelter with a friend over the weekend and couldn´t bear to leave her there so she called and told us she was bringing someone home to visit for the summer. We were suprised when she opened the car door and out jumped Ruby. She immediately ingratiated herself into the family and was lavished with affection, which she more than reciprocated. Its like she knows this is her second chance and wants to make sure that she doesn´t blow it.

I sponsor rescues in the Orlando area.
There is no doubt in my mind that these dogs know they have been given a second chance at life, and show how grateful they are for the rest of their lives.

We adopted a ´Traveling Gentleman From the South´ over five years ago and he´s been my constant companion from day one.

We think maybe his 80 lbs of bone and muscle is a cross between German Shepard, Coon Hound and something with a purple tongue.

He´s 10+ now and his muzzle is quite gray but he´s still young in spirit and I refer to him as “My Ten Year Old Puppy”.

He now only trots quickly as he returns from his inspection tour of the ´Back Forty´ each morning instead of displaying his Rin-Tin-Tin act by running with the wind as if he was auditioning for ´The Dog of The Year´ award.

I often ponder what I will do when he passes.

There are several ´Dog Transporters´ like Greg Mahle who move thousands of dogs from the South to the North East yearly. I don´t think any of them make a good income from their work although Greg certainly does it in quantity with that trailer.

´No Kill Clinics´ in the South rescue dogs and cats from city and county pounds and care for them until they are adopted. Our clinic had 300 dogs when we adopted and didn´t charge a fee for the adoption.

Please search for these clinics and donate a few dollars a couple of times a year for food, bedding and chewy toys.

Here in Virginia (outside northen VA), the shelters are full of large breed dogs; hounds, pit bull mixes, etc. Many shelters will ship these dogs to New England/ NorthEast as there is a demand for these dogs and they in turn ship to Virginia the smaller breeds.

#14, you are so right. After our last cat died at a ripe old age, I couldn´t bring myself to get another. We´d lost enough furry friends to know I didn´t want to go through that again.

Then one of our children brought him a kitty from the shelter, and it was love at first sight. She is such a joy to us.

So, everyone, do yourself a great favor, and save one of God´s creatures. They will repay you with love and loyalty.

A source tipped me off last week to a curious occurrence: It seems that two planeloads of illegal aliens were recently shipped to Massachusetts. The first reportedly landed at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford. According to my tipster, approximately 160 illegal immigrants arrived on that flight and stayed nearly a week before being transferred to a Department of Homeland Security site and then released. The second flight reportedly was diverted from Hanscom to Boston´s Logan Airport this past weekend. I am told that both Massachusetts and New Hampshire officials were on hand. I reached out to Hanscom AFB for

I´ve always thought entrenched left-wing journalists in Washington needed their heads examined. Much to my satisfaction, it appears the corporate media bosses of at least one Beltway anchor now agree. According to The Washington Post this week, NBC News hired a "psychological consultant" to examine why flailing "Meet the Press" moderator David Gregory has been bombing in the ratings. The overpriced shrinks (NBC prefers the euphemism "brand consultants") came from the New York-based brand fixer-upper Elastic Strategy. They interviewed Gregory´s wife. They interrogated his friends. They crunched their numbers. They compiled their reports. And after all that, the "experts" are

The Obama administration once again has punted on a final decision for the Keystone XL pipeline, announcing ahead of the holiday weekend that it is extending a key review period indefinitely -- a move that could push off a determination until after the midterm elections. Republicans, as well as red-state Democrats who want the pipeline approved, slammed the administration for the delay. "It´s absolutely ridiculous that this well over five year long process is continuing for an undetermined amount of time," Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.H., said in a statement. Republican Nebraska Rep. Lee Terry called the decision "shameful," particularly since

God hates Fred Phelps. I so want to hold up a placard emblazoned with that message and stand yards away from members of Phelps’ family as they grieve the death of their hate-mongering patriarch. But I cannot. Phelps founded the Westboro Baptist Church, a Kansas–based church that spewed homophobic vitriol for decades. While Phelps also hated Jews and an assortment of other minorities, it was his vile diatribes against gays that reached epic proportions. He discovered that by protesting funerals – particularly military funerals – he could get national attention. And he did. He also inflicted pain on the families

The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security.
