V.A. paid out millions to settle 167 cases

The Department of Veterans Affairs paid a combined $36.4 million to settle at least 167 cases related to delays in medical treatment, a new report alleges. The embattled agency — which has been criticized in recent months for a failure to treat veterans promptly — made the payments since 2001 either voluntarily or as the result of court actions, the Dayton Daily News reported Sunday, citing record obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. News of the settlement comes after reports emerged last month linking the death of at least 40 veterans to lengthy waits and shoddy care at a Phoenix,

Do We Need This Government

Why would anyone pay for something when the exact same thing is available for free? The answer seems obvious, yet the question remains relevant for an obscure federal agency still pursuing its Cold War mission in the age of the search engine. Say you wanted to know more about supersonic retro-propulsion wind tunnel testing. Or ancient land use in the Maya Lowlands. Or a 1996 hazardous waste characteristics scoping study. OK, you don´t really want to know about these things, but someone did, and someone did the research. Back in 1950, Congress created an agency to find that research. The National Technical

California Chrome has worn nasal strips during victories in the first two events of thoroughbred racing´s Triple Crown, but he might have to compete at the Belmont Stakes without one, if he competes at all. Trainer Art Sherman said California Chrome, who won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, might be held from the race if the 3-year-old horse is not allowed to wear the strips across his nose that help improve breathing. When asked about a reported New York rule against it, Sherman said, "The horse has been on a six-race winning streak with nasal strips. I don´t know why they

During last year’s budget negotiations, Senate and House Republicans warned that many Obamacare enrollees would provide false information about their income in order to obtain subsidies to which they are not entitled. In response, HHS Secretary Sebelius (remember her?) promised to put in place a system through which the government would thoroughly vet the salary information submitted by applicants for coverage. That promise was a predicate — or if you’re cynical like me, a fig leaf — for the bargain Congress reached. Consider Sebelius’ promise another lie of Obamacare. According to the Washington Post, hundreds of thousands of Americans are likely

Mayor Rahm Emanuel acknowledged Friday that he has alienated some Chicago voters with his polarizing personal style and would benefit politically from being “smoother around the edges.” “Thank God the election is not today,” Emanuel said, when confronted again with results of a Chicago Sun-Times poll that showed only 29 percent of those surveyed and 8 percent of African-Americans would support him if the election were held today. Friday’s “fireside discussion” hosted by the University of Chicago marked the anniversary of Emanuel’s third year in office. GM told engineers to avoid using dozens of words when communicating about vehicle problems that could potentially lead to recalls, including everything from “safety” to “Kevorkianesque.” A Powerpoint presentation included in the company’s consent agreement with NHTSA unveiled Friday shows the nation’s largest automaker told engineers to avoid terms both absurd and mundane for fear of e-mails leaking to the media or regulators. The presentation, given in the first quarter of 2008, was meant to teach engineers to use sparing, non-emotional language to describe problems that could potentially lead to auto recalls.

The EPA will launch the most dramatic anti-pollution regulation in a generation early next month, a sweeping crackdown on carbon that offers President Barack Obama his last real shot at a legacy on climate change — while causing significant political peril for red-state Democrats. The move could produce a dramatic makeover of the power industry, shifting it away from coal-burning plants toward natural gas, solar and wind. While this is the big move environmentalists have been yearning for, it also has major political implications in November for a president already under fire for what the GOP is branding a job-killing “War

One of the astonishingly depressing aspects of American life is that the public sphere often seems to be simultaneously too forgiving and too judgmental. We live in a culture that deems Henry Kissinger a wise man, and Oliver North an appropriate host of television shows. The sorry history of Donald Sterling was known before his disgusting private comments were captured on tape, and yet no one seemed to find him worthy of social stigma until now. Public figures beat their wives or girlfriends and suffer only temporary setbacks in fame and fortune. And yet, just take a look at what

If this clip is any indication, Rep. Trey Gowdy won’t be letting the media off the hook for its silence on Benghazi: Congressman Trey Gowdy (R-SC) turned the tables on the media and asked them questions about Benghazi . The silence was deafening. It seems like those in the room are a little embarrassed when Gowdy calls them out, and why shouldn’t they be? It is their responsibility to go after the hard questions – and when it comes to Benghazi, many asked nothing but fluff.

Yes - but what exactly is the president mad about? Is he mad that the VA deliberately falsified records showing that veterans were not being seen at VA hospitals in a timely manner? Attorney General Eric Holder said on Saturday while public utterances of bigotry are roundly condemned in the United States racial discrimination persists in more subtle ways. (Snip) He said the new battleground against discrimination should focus on policies and laws that appear race-neutral but in practice impede equal opportunity. "This is the work that truly matters - because policies that disenfranchise specific groups are more pernicious than hateful rants," Holder told the graduates at Morgan State, a historically black college. He cited disciplinary practices in schools that punish black males at three times the rate of their white peers. He

Dr. Benjamin Carson is becoming a serious voice in the political arena. In light of the Benghazi hearings and IRS scandal, Carson penned an editorial for the National Review, objectively pointing out why Obama is unfit for office. On Benghazi: “This should not be a partisan issue, because the implications of ignoring or prevaricating about the underlying mistakes will have far-reaching consequences. The main squeeze of openly gay NFL player Michael Sam comes from a family of Midwest mobsters. Vito Cammisano, the hunky 23-year-old former collegiate swimmer, is the grandson of the late Mafia boss William (Willie the Rat) Cammisano. His father, Gerlarmo (Jerry) Cammisano, 60, followed in the family’s shady business and ended up doing 14 months in prison for running a Kansas City-based gambling ring, according to records. But on Saturday the Cammisano name became part of a feel-good sports story of the year when Sam became the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team as Vito proudly stood at his

Rep. Based on my extensive 18-month investigation, it is my professional conclusion that the Internet video known as Innocence of Muslims, the video allegedly responsible for Middle East violence and more importantly, the September 11, 2012 attack in Benghazi that resulted in the death of four Americans can be directly tied to a covert intelligence operation and operational assets of the U.S. Department of Justice. Additionally, the individuals and entities responsible for the Internet promotion of the video of that name can be traced not just to an intelligence operation contemporaneous to the attacks, but to previous events of historical significance and

The news settled slowly over America’s journalists, creeping into their bones and leaving them in a state of flabbergasted paralysis. For years they’d covered the Great Recession in which 8.7 million people lost their jobs. Now it had finally happened to someone important. Then the paralysis

A prominent New York ophthalmologist believes that a special pair of glasses worn by former former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are the type used to treat the double vision sometimes caused by severe head trauma. In an interview with Fox News, Dr. Marc Werner said the glasses had a Fresnel prism. ´In order to see one object, your eyes need to be pointed in the same direction. If your eyes are misaligned, one way to optically align them is to put a prism ... on your glasses,´ he said.
