Atherton OKs transgender
non-discrimination policy

Courier-Journal [Louisville, KY], by Chris Kenning

Before a divided crowd of several hundred students, parents and advocates, Atherton High School´s site-based council on Thursday approved a new non-discrimination policy sparked by a controversy over a transgender student´s access to a girls´ bathroom. The school policy, which still must receive a second reading, bars discrimination based on a range of factors, including age, race or sexual orientation — but goes a step beyond a similar districtwide policy by also including gender identity. It didn't explicitly endorse Principal Thomas Aberli's recent decision to allow a student who was born male but identifies as female to use

Currently traveling in Minnesota, Barack Obama appears to be bristling at the notion that House Republicans are set to challenge him in the courts. PBS characterizes his demeanor as "mocking." Perhaps. But observers of he Obama White House might note that he often becomes petulant, if not downright immature whenever he feels his presumed authority is being challenged by another branch of America´s Constitutional form of government. “They’re not doing anything, and then they’re mad at me for doing something,” Mr. Obama said of Republican lawmakers, adding, “They’ve decided they’re going to sue me for doing my job.” This came

With the news of a massive influx of immigrants on the southern border, a new Gallup Poll shows that only 22% of Americans favor increased immigration. Only 14% of Republicans, 23% of independents, and 27% of Democrats favor increased immigration. The poll actually revealed a strong desire among Americans to decrease immigration, as 41% of respondents thought immigration should be decreased. This included 50% of GOP voters, 43% of independents, and 32% of Democrats. The percentage of those preferring to decrease immigration has jumped from 35% in 2012 and 2013 to 41% in 2014. There has been a slow but steady growth since

A black man in New Jersey has filed a lawsuit against his former employer, Benjamin Moore Paints, which he says named one of its paint colors after him and then fired him when he complained. Clinton Tucker, who managed online sales for Benjamin Moore, which is owned by the conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway, said that he was bothered by the names of several of the company’s paint colors, “Clinton Brown,” “Tucker Chocolate,” and “Confederate Red.” “Being a black man named Clinton Tucker, the plaintiff found this to be extremely racially offensive,” reads the complaint, filed in Essex County Court. Tucker claims

Comparisons between Hillary Clinton and Mitt Romney have been greatly exaggerated, Hillary Clinton says. Clinton practically rolled with laughter when PBS’ Gwen Ifill noted humorlessly that her own husband has been “forced” to defend her recent comments about being “dead broke” after leaving the White House. What was humorous in that remarks is known only to Clinton. “I shouldn’t have said the, I think, five or so words that I said,” the former secretary of state said. “My inartful use of those five words doesn’t change who I am.” Later in the interview, Ifill asked if Clinton had become the Democratic adaptation of

Lois Lerner is back in the news cycle after the IRS told a House committee recently a chunk of her emails are missing because of a failed hard drive, with House Republicans holding multiple hearings on the matter in the past week. And in an interview with POLITICO, Lerner’s lawyer says it’s “a little brazen to think she did this on purpose.” William Taylor III says all the Republican hand-wringing about Lerner doing something sinister is just “silly” because, he said, she honestly doesn’t know what happened to the emails. He charges that Republican “critics of Ms. Lerner and the

Dear Secretary Clinton, Please consider this in the nature of a friendly intervention. You have a money problem. It’s time to deal with it before it gets worse. Actually, you have two money problems. The first is how you talk about it. The second is how you collect it — or, to be more precise, the fact that you’re still frenetically collecting it. Let me be clear at the outset: The issue isn’t that you’re rich, or even that you and your husband became rich after leaving office. American voters don’t have a problem with wealthy candidates or even wealthy ex-presidents

Actress Amy Adams traded her first class seat on a Detroit to Los Angeles flight with a soldier who had been booked in coach. Adams reportedly noticed the American serviceman at the gate and quietly asked to switch seats with him. The five-time Academy Award nominee has often spoke glowingly of her father´s time in the military and of growing up on bases in both Italy and U.S. She then had a brief chat with the soldier near the cockpit and scurried to her seat in coach before many people noticed what had happened, according to ESPN host Jemele Hill, who witnessed the switch. 'I noticed Ms. Adams was in first class and as I was getting

What transpired in the Mississippi Senate run-off is a red line for many conservatives across the country, because the Republican Party establishment essentially took a civil war and escalated it to a war for independence. It’s one thing to oppose your base in a primary. It’s entirely another to despicably play the race card against your base, and bolster the legitimacy of the propaganda of our race-baiting opponents on the Left. But that’s exactly what the Kamikaze pilots running the GOP did. As a result, Chris McDaniel won Republican voters handily on Tuesday, but still lost the run-off statewide thanks

How far did the establishment GOP forces backing Senator Thad Cochran go in Mississippi this week? Too far, and their tactics are likely to leave permanent scars in a civil war with Tea Party forces that are out of all proportion to the importance the establishment placed on saving one 76-year-old senator’s ability to please Washington’s K Street lobbying interests. “This is a win for the establishment, but it’s a win with an asterisk, because it’s so tainted that it might be one of those things where they’re going to be sorry they ever won the runoff in Mississippi,” Craig

MINNEAPOLIS – Move over, Republicans. President Obama has a new boogeyman: The media. During his two-day tour here, the president has let out his frustrations on the fourth estate for failing, in his view, to cover serious issues facing the American people and instead focusing on the frivolous. “If you watch the news, you’d think, ‘Okay, Washington is a mess and the basic attitude is that everybody’s crazy,” Obama told a crowd of 3,500 here at the Lake Harriet Band Shell. Noting that he met with a local resident to discuss her difficulties paying her bills, Obama said: “You don’t

There are two arguments that advocates of Chris McDaniel are using to suggest that the results of Tuesday´s Republican Senate run-off election in Mississippi should be overturned. First, they argue that voters who voted in the Democratic primary and the Republican run-off should be eliminated from the total. And, second, they argue that Mississippi law prevents someone from voting in a party primary who won´t support the general election candidate. Neither argument will work. In the first case, there are almost certainly not enough Democratic primary/GOP runoff ballots to make up the nearly 7,000-vote gap between McDaniel and incumbent Sen. Thad

In an interview that aired on “Good Morning America” on ABC on Friday, President Barack Obama was asked by George Stephanopoulos about the ongoing crisis at the border caused by the influx of Central American youth overwhelming the U.S. Border Patrol and its resources. Stephanopoulos asked Obama if he thought he had done enough in voicing a warning not come, to which Obama insisted he had. Partial transcript as follows: STEPHANOPOULOS: You mentioned immigration. There’s a humanitarian crisis on the border. Some of your critics have said you need to speak out directly to the people of Central America and say, ‘Don´t come.
