The winner in Ukraine is China

I’ve been predicting that Russia would not send its army into eastern Ukraine, but stand back and let the country dissolve into chaos. (Snip) We set out to propagate democracy in Eastern Europe, and helped to push Putin’s popularity rating at home above 80%. In the entire sorry history of US diplomacy, I can think of nothing that more resembles an own goal. Nice going, guys. Putin isn’t a genius. We are complete idiots. We have urgent national security needs, but we don’t talk about them. Where is the sense of urgency

Comments:
...and neither is Spengler overly impressed by Obama-Biden-Clinton-Kerry statecraft. The next two and a half years cannot pass quickly enough.

James Van Allen, after whom the radiation belt is named, asked in 2004 whether human spaceflight is a legacy dream, a survival of some outdated science-fiction notion, now overtaken by harsh reality. (Snip) Would it be the Moon, would it be Mars, would it be the Space Station? They could hardly anticipate that Obama would actually shoot for “none of the above”; that in 2014 a resurgent Russia would actually threaten to deny the United States access to the space station and even the use of Russian rocket boosters. A “fundamentally transformed America” had gone from being able to put a

HONEA PATH, S.C. — The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office said a woman has been charged after a man died when a bullet missed the protective vest he was wearing when he asked a friend to shoot him. Anderson County deputies said they received a call at 2:41 a.m. from a home on Broadmouth Church Road and arrived to find the victim lying in the garage area of a home with a single gunshot wound to the chest. People at the scene performed CPR on the man, and paramedics were called before the coroner was called to the scene, deputies said.

TAMPA — Apologizing profusely, Julie Schenecker wept Thursday night as she told a judge she believes the two children she shot to death “are in no pain and they are alive and enjoying everything and anything heaven has to offer, Jesus protecting them and keeping them safe until we get there.” Schenecker had just been convicted of two counts of first-degree murder in the Jan. 27, 2011, slayings of her children, Calyx, 16, and Beau, 13. Jurors took less than three hours to reach their verdict, rejecting defense arguments that Schenecker was insane at the time she shot her children.

ELYRIA, Ohio - An Ohio appeals court has upheld a judge´s order that a deadbeat father can´t have more kids until he pays his back child support. The decision this week by the 9th District Court of Appeals didn´t provide an opinion about whether the judge´s order was appropriate. Instead the appeals court said it didn´t have enough information to decide the merits of the case without a copy of the pre-sentence report detailing Asim Taylor´s background. In January 2013, Lorain County Probate Judge James Walther said Taylor couldn´t have more children while he is on probation for five years.

National Security Adviser Susan Rice, at a foreign policy lunch on Wednesday, seemed to scoff at a question on whether a select committee investigation on Benghazi would reveal new evidence. "Danged if I know," Rice said, to audience laughter. "I mean honestly, the administration has produced, I think, 25,000 pages of documents. ... It´s hard to imagine what further will come of yet another committee. What I think about and focus on as the national security adviser is what we must do with Congress to increase our security of our embassies and facilities around the world." She was addressing the

China and Russia are meeting in Beijing to discuss a huge energy deal whose purpose is to replace sanction-driven reductions in demands from Europe with sales to China. But the Chinese are reportedly driving a hard bargain on price, citing cheaper gas from the United States. It is ironic that the most effective American leverage over Russia comes from instruments the Obama administration did not want. Today, union organizers and a handful of disgruntled fast-food employees are to protest large restaurant chains in the U.S. and other countries, demanding a $15 minimum wage. The organizers behind the demonstrations are misleadingly calling them “strikes.” In reality, they’re Potemkin village protests orchestrated by national labor unions and PR flacks. The muscle behind these protests is the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which has spent over $15 million on fast-food protests since January 2013. Until recently, the majority of this funding was distributed directly to the so-called “worker centers” that are the

This report was prepared by the US Global Change Research Program. Funded with a huge annual budget of $2.5 billion, not much less than the

Last November, America’s ethanol policy got a mite smarter. The EPA walked back on some of the mandates it had in place for fuel refiners to blend in supposedly “green” ethanol, part of the country’s Renewable Fuel Standard. Since then, the ethanol lobby, affectionately (or not) called “Big Corn,” has been railing against the decision as one coerced by the far more insidious-sounding “Big Oil” lobby. Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush said he would strive to be like Lyndon Johnson, the Democrat famous for expanding the U.S. welfare state through the "Great Society," if he were elected president. According to the Miami Herald, Bush made those comments Wednesday night in San Antonio, Florida at Saint Leo University, while speaking about education, immigration, and energy policy. Bush did not address Johnson´s Great Society and War on Poverty programs, about which Ronald Reagan once famously quipped, "We had a war on poverty, and poverty won." In 2011, Peter Gibson, a professor of gastroenterology at Monash University and director of the GI Unit at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, published a study that found gluten, a protein found in grains like wheat, rye, and barley, to cause gastrointestinal distress in patients without celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder unequivocally triggered by gluten. Double-blinded, randomized, and placebo-controlled, the experiment was one of the strongest pieces of evidence to date that non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), more commonly known as gluten intolerance, is a genuine condition. By extension, the study also lent credibility to the meteoric rise of the gluten-free

CONCORD, N.H. — Some residents of a predominantly white New Hampshire town are upset with racist remarks a police commissioner made about President Barack Obama. Resident Jane O´Toole said she overheard Wolfeboro Police Commissioner Robert Copeland use a racial slur in describing Obama. And in an email to her, Copeland, who is white, acknowledged using the N-word in referring to the president and said he will not apologize. "I believe I did use the ´N´ word in reference to the current occupant of the Whitehouse," Copeland said in an excerpt from an email he sent to his fellow police commissioners
