Dogs of war: Inside the incredible bonds
between servicemen and their working dogs

Daily Mail [UK], by Alex Greig

Dogs, with their superior senses and unshakeable loyalty, have been used in warfare since ancient times. The U.S. military had a force of roughly 2,500 working dogs at the height of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. And while it´s tempting to imagine the friendships between military officers and their dogs, this is no man-and-pet scenario. The dogs are regarded by the military as expendable pieces of equipment, to be replaced as needed. For some marines and their dogs, though, the professional relationship turns into something much more after the team endures the horrors of war together. National Geographic´s June

What a wonderful article! The photo on the cover of the magazine is magnificent. If you haven´t read the book Suspect by Robert Crais you should do so. It´s a mystery about a cop and involves a service dog. It´s just excellent.

Nasty Texas GOP race gets nastier
with brawl over psychiatric records

In the early days of the Texas Republic, candidates were known to call each other drunks and hog thieves. Elections haven´t gotten much tamer since. A brutal Republican runoff for Texas lieutenant governor is shaping up as one of the nastiest races in the country, let alone the Lone Star State. The feud hit a flashpoint just days before early voting got under way this week, as one candidate´s private medical history -- including caregiver notes from a psychiatric facility -- was released to reporters. The development follows a round of political mudslinging and attack ads. The verbal slugfest pits David Dewhurst,

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell vowed Thursday that if given the opportunity to lead the Senate he would watch over the upper chamber in a much different fashion that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Speaking at the American Enterprise Institute, Mr. McConnell said Mr. Reid, Nevada Democrat, has done “tremendous damage” to the comity of the Senate that is essential to the chamber’s operations. “He has turned the Senate into a graveyard of good ideas,” the Kentucky Republican, accusing Mr. Reid of blocking amendments from both parties and circumventing the normal committee process. “He has muzzled the people’s representatives and, through them,

The Obama administration is determined to continue mocking the separation of powers concept contained in the Constitution. Thus, the president is contemplating another unilateral move with regard to illegal immigration, allowing some illegal aliens brought here as children to serve in the United States military. The move is an outgrowth of another unilateral decision made by Obama, known as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). DACA provided work permits and deferred action from deportation to approximately 500,000 younger illegals who met certain eligibility criteria. The Defense Department “continues to examine the laws and policies that address the eligibility of noncitizens

President Obama declared his outrage at allegations of misconduct at VA hospitals at a Wednesday press conference after an Oval Office meeting with Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki. "I will not stand for it — not as commander in chief, but also not as an American,” he told reporters as furor grows over allegations of treatment delays and preventable deaths at the health care facilities. The VA Inspector General’s office said late Tuesday that 26 facilities are being investigated nationwide — up from 10 just last week — including a Phoenix hospital where 40 veterans allegedly died while waiting for treatment and

A terrible sort of insanity has gripped the Democratic Party. On almost a daily basis, when you see the party’s leaders in action, you want to start edging toward the door, murmuring “Nice doggie. Nice doggie.” Today it was Howard Dean (filmed a week ago, but seen on YouTube today). He was addressing a Democratic crowd in Colorado, and went off on a tirade against Republicans. Yes, he really did say that Republicans aren’t American. And that they should stay away from the United States, and go to Russia where they belong. One gets the feeling that if the Democrats

Republicans’ hopes of winning back the Senate received a big boost in primary elections Tuesday, with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) easily winning and other candidates favored by the party establishment beating back tea party challengers. After years of intraparty turmoil that cost Republicans key races, voters this year are coalescing around the GOP’s strongest candidates ahead of November’s general election, when control of the Senate during President Obama’s final two years in office will be up for grabs. On Tuesday, the most consequential day of voting so far this year, Democrats were left disappointed. GOP Senate candidates prone to

Time after time, President Obama has reportedly learned of a number of big administration scandals in the media, from the IRS to Fast & Furious and now the VA scandal over wait times and veterans dying before receiving proper treatment (Jay Carney said today the president learned about this scandal through media reports). All this apparent unawareness before the fact led Charles Krauthammer to argue on Special Report today that Obama acts like he “stumbled upon the presidency” only to be shocked by how much wrong there really is. Today, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney sought to partially walk back his statement yesterday in which he said President Obama learned about the growing scandal at the Veterans Administration by watching a report on the topic on CNN. After realizing just how bad that sounded, Carney returned to the daily briefing with the White House press corps today to say that his statement was being misinterpreted. According to Carney, what he really meant to say was that the president had only heard of the “specific allegations” about misconduct at VA hospitals by watching television.
