Science as McCarthysim
National Review Online, by Rupert Darwall

On Monday, Washington Post columnist Michael Gerson took a tilt at climate skeptics. “The assumption that the vast majority in a scientific field is engaged in fraud or corruption is frankly conspiratorial,” Gerson wrote. As a non-scientist, he decided that the answer to the question of whether humans had warmed the planet was to trust scientists. The article’s timing was unfortunate. Three weeks ago, Lennart Bengtsson, a leading Swedish meteorologist approaching his 80s, announced that he was joining the avowedly skeptical Global Warming Policy Foundation think tank. In an interview with Spiegel Online, Bengtsson spoke of the need for climate-model predictions

The difference is that McCarthy was right about the communist infiltration of government and Hollywood. I would say a better analogy would be the old Spanish Inquisition.

Bengtsson disturbed a sweet little scam in which scientific poseurs drew rent from agencies that benefitted from their support of Climate Fraud. Disturb a nest of hornets and a reaction will likely occur.

There are childhood memories so penetrating, they run like movie reels in the mind’s eye, molding our character. My vintage 8mm features my European-born grandmother turning tearful and tongue-tied upon mention of her family, lost in the Holocaust. Her heartbreak, and the gruesome photos I ogled in my parents´ edition of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, were mind-boggling. When I was 13, Holocaust survivor Gerda Klein appeared often in my thoughts, helping me process the unfathomable. Like a narrator, she recounted her death-defying odyssey from an idyllic childhood through ghettos, slave-labor camps,

“You can’t handle the truth!” Jack Nicholson shouted at Tom Cruise during the climactic court-martial scene in the movie “A Few Good Men.” Caught in a lie that exposed his “above-the-law” mentality, Nicholson’s character, Col. Jessup, justifies his lawlessness, declaring, “I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it!” It’s a riveting scene, pitting security against the rule of law. But before agreeing with Jessup that lawfulness conflicts with freedom, Think Again.

Shouldn’t college students know as much American civics as they do pop culture? MRCTV went to American University to find out, discovering few students who could name a single U.S. senator or the number of senators from each state, though most knew the Oscar-winning song “Let It Go.” Equally surprising are polls showing that only one-quarter of Americans can identify the vice president or name more than one of the five freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment (religion, speech, press, assembly and petition), though over half knew at least two cartoon characters from “The Simpsons.” Before suggesting Americans’ ignorance is bliss

Since Teddy Roosevelt counseled, “Speak softly and carry a big stick,” U.S. presidents have followed his advice, cautioning adversaries to resolve conflicts peacefully or suffer consequences. Even President Carter brandished America’s big stick upon learning that bad things happen when you’re not respected, prompting him to Think Again about deterrence given “the Soviets’ ultimate goals.” But today, after unilaterally “resetting” relations with repressive regimes including Iran and Russia — whose Ukraine incursion is “the gravest threat to European security and stability since the end of the Cold War,” proclaimed NATO’s chief — America’s posture is more akin to “speak loudly and carry

Shortly after Barack Obama rose to the presidency, the Right became fascinated by Saul Alinsky, and in particular by the philosopher and community organizer’s “Rules for Radicals.” Many on the right focused their attention on Alinsky’s Fourth Rule: “Make opponents live up to their own book of rules. You can kill them with this, for they can no more obey their own rules than the Christian church can live up to Christianity.” The strategy of “making them live up to their own book of rules” is frequently mentioned and discussed these days at Breitbart.com, Instapundit, Ace of Spades, and just

When Bob Bergdahl launched in Arabic, invoking Allah while standing next to President Obama in the White House Rose Garden, a number of Americans were startled. (snip) I am not knowledgeable enough to judge the claim of sanctifying the White House and claiming it for Islam, but I place a lot of stick in watching nonverbal cues, people’s quick reactions. And so, when our friends at iOwnTheWorld.com captured and enlarged President Obama’s reaction to Bergdahl’s invocation of Allah, it hit me hard. Watch for yourself and see if it means anything to you.

Susan Rice has done it again. Defending the deal that freed Sgt Bowe Bergdahl from the Taliban, the national security adviser declared that Bergdahl had "served the United States with honour and distinction". [Snip] In the US military, walking off post isn´t regarded positively. Moreover, as I noted yesterday, Bergdahl´s unit--1st Battalion, the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment--lost seven men during its 2009-10 deployment. Parachute units like the 501st take great pride in their elite status within the military. Many Americans believe that administration is elevating a traitor (as they see it) above those killed in action. Visit an online US

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Wednesday that he didn’t know of any troops who had died in the search for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, amid a growing controversy over whether the former Taliban prisoner deserted his unit. “I do not know of specific circumstances or details of U.S. solders dying as a result of efforts to find and rescue Sgt. Bergdahl," Hagel said at a press conference in Brussels, Belgium, where he met with NATO defense ministers, Reuters reported. Bergdahl’s release sparked controversy after the Obama administration’s decision to swap him for five Taliban commanders being held in the prison at

NBC News Chief White House Correspondent Chuck Todd told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Tuesday that the White House has been surprised by the concerned reaction to the release of U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. He said that the White House expected criticism of the decision to release five Taliban in exchange for Bergdahl, but they also expected “euphoria” over the release of the last American soldier held captive in Afghanistan. “What’s been interesting, Andrea, what’s cost the White House off guard here, they were expecting Gitmo criticisms of the detainees that were chosen,” Todd said. “They did not expect this

Five years ago, I publicly raised questions about Bowe Bergdahl’s desertion from Blackfoot Company, 1-501 Infantry (Airborne), 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division. A few weeks after his so-called “capture” in late June 2009, three conflicting accounts had surfaced: U.S. officials told the Associated Press Bergdahl had “walked off” the base with three Afghans; the Taliban claimed on its website that “a drunken American soldier had come out of his garrison” and into their arms; and Bergdahl claimed in his Taliban “hostage video” that he had “lagged behind a patrol” before being captured. I asked on my blog: Were the

Des Moines, IA - State Sen. Joni Ernst has won the Republican primary for an Iowa U.S. Senate seat held for 30 years by retiring Democrat Tom Harkin. The 43-year-old Ernst won the nomination over five candidates. She´ll face Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley in the November general election. All the Republicans seeking the nomination described themselves as deeply conservative, but Ernst managed to stand out in part due to two television ads. One featured her on a farm, talking about her experience castrating hogs, and the other showed her firing a handgun. Ernst also received endorsements from a variety of groups and individuals,

Bill Clinton´s critics in Arkansas used to say that he would rather climb a tree and tell a lie than stand on the ground and tell the truth. In other words, Clinton would lie when the truth would do -- and when telling the truth would be easier. The saying might apply to the Obama administration´s public statements about Bowe Bergdahl, the U.S. soldier released from captivity in Afghanistan in a trade for five Taliban commanders held at Guantanamo Bay. There is substantial evidence to suggest that Bergdahl abandoned his post in 2009 -- he went AWOL, he deserted, whatever

NEW YORK — The Rev. Al Sharpton and other civil rights leaders pressed for greater diversity in NBA front offices in a meeting with Commissioner Adam Silver on Wednesday amid discussions about racial issues raised by the ouster of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling. A group including Sharpton, National Urban League President Marc Morial and incoming NAACP President Cornell Brooks met with Silver for more than an hour at the league’s Manhattan offices. They described the session as constructive and pressed for diversity in front offices and among suppliers. “There must be serious dialogue around ownership and business engagement

President Obama betrayed the highest obligation of his office — safeguarding national security — in trading five hard-core Taliban for the American serviceman who appears to have deserted in Afghanistan. The five sworn enemies of the United States are now in the Gulf state of Qatar, where they are free to come and go as they like, beyond the watch of American agents. In just one year, they will be free to return to Afghanistan to fight there and stage terror attacks far beyond that country’s borders.

Acting as commander-in-chief, President Obama exchanged five terrorist leaders for U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. The rationale was that the United States leaves no soldier behind on the battlefield or in enemy hands. That is half of the equation. The disconcerting other half is that Bergdahl may have left behind his own unit and gone over to the enemy. In 2009, then Pvt. Bergdahl (automatically promoted in absentia to the rank of sergeant) left his frontline unit under the cover of darkness. Soon after, the Taliban reported him in their custody. For weeks, thousands of American soldiers risked their lives to

The White House has apologized to Senate Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) for failing to alert her in advance of a decision to release Taliban commanders from Guantanamo Bay. Feinstein told reporters that she received a call from Deputy National Security Adviser Tony Blinken on Monday evening apologizing for what the administration is calling an “oversight.” “I had a call from the White House last night, from Tony Blinken, apologizing for it,” she said. “He apologized and said it was an oversight,” she added. The National Republican Senatorial Committee tells NBC News that it´s "all in" for Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., in his likely runoff against Tea Party challenger Chris McDaniel."We are all in for Thad," NRSC spokesman Brad Dayspring said. Cochran and McDaniel appear headed for a June 24 runoff after no candidate reached 50 percent of the vote in the June 3 Mississippi GOP Senate primary. With 99 percent of votes in, McDaniel has 49.6 percent and Cochran 48.9 percent. And while Cochran could very well be the underdog (incumbents this cycle haven´t fared well in runoffs), Dayspring says that McDaniel has
