Italy´s Alitalia scraps Venezuela
flights over currency dispute: sources

CARACAS - Italian airline Alitalia has canceled service to Venezuela as of June 2 due to delays in repatriating revenue under the country´s 11-year-old currency control system, two sources told Reuters on Wednesday. Venezuela owes airlines some $4 billion, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), because the airlines are required to sell tickets in the local bolivar currency but the government has not granted them approval to repatriate that revenue. "The last flight arrives on June 1, the plane will go back (to Italy) and will not return," said a local company employee, who asked not to be identified, adding

Comments:
Have you ever tried to get a flight to Caracas? They are very few, because so many airlines have pulled out, and very very expensive. Now, they are getting more expensive and rare.

I hope that I am never in a situation where I have to get a flight to Caracas.

The country is falling down around their Communist ears. Inevitable though. It will take a real revolution to change things now.

Seems to me to show a certain slowness in these airlines. If one doesn´t get paid for your service, cut them off immediately until they satisfy the arrears. Then insist on payment up front. Otherwise pack up and leave permanently. Venezuela is not likely to improve their business obligations any time soon. Cut them off and do it now.

THE RED PROCE$$ION. I have reviewed some analyses on the upcoming congress of ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) in a scenario of ineludible confrontation. Last week, I posted an extensive notice on the regrouping of internal forces that, fearless, have made known their differences. Héctor Navarro, Jesús Faría, Ana Elisa Osorio, Rodrigo Cabezas and Freddy Bernal (members of the party national directorate) have been some of them. I have been told of meetings of Ronald Blanco La Cruz, ex Táchira state governor, and Castro Soteldo, Portuguesa state governor, with some other original members of

Venezuela wants to increase oil supplies to the United States to regain its lost market share over the past decade, as Caracas views the shale oil boom in the United States as an opportunity to increase heavy crude exports, said Venezuelan Minister of Petroleum and Mining Rafael Ramírez. After meeting with investors and bankers in London last week, Ramírez –also the president of state-owned oil conglomerate Pdvsa–, said Venezuela is working to get a loan of USD 4 billion from China secured by oil sales. However, he remarked the total debt of Venezuela with Beijing was under USD 20 billion,

The letter addressed by Foreign minister Hector Timerman to his peer Luis Almagro informs Argentina will take the case to international tribunals and is currently ´reassessing´ bilateral relations. ERBIL, Iraq — The American Embassy in Baghdad plans to evacuate a substantial number of its personnel this week in the face of a militant advance that rapidly swept from the north toward the capital, the State Department announced on Sunday. The embassy, a beige fortress on the banks of the Tigris River within the heavily-secured Green Zone, where Iraqi government buildings are also located, has the largest staff of any United States Embassy. The exact number of people being evacuated was not clear Sunday. The embassy would remain open, a person familiar with the planning said, and much of its staff

As the situation in Iraq begins to looks more and more like a complete state meltdown, Russia has stepped in with a familiar refrain: "We told you so." "We are greatly alarmed by what is happening in Iraq. We warned long ago that the affair that the Americans and the Britons stirred up there wouldn´t end well," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday, according to Voice of Russia. He also described the Iraq war as a "total failure" and said Russia was sorry that its forecasts had come true. It´s hard to deny that Russia was vocal in saying that the

John Avlon’s dishonest column on the cop-killers in Las Vegas should be studied by journalism students as an example of how to exploit a tragedy for political purposes. It is a shame he gets on CNN as an “analyst,” which gives him undeserved authority and prestige, when he deliberately confuses and misleads people. In this case, he tried to blame conservatives for the murders of two policemen. His Daily Beast column carried two titles, one of them being, “The Bonnie and Clyde of Ultra-Right Hate.” He said Jerad and Amanda Miller killed two metro cops while shouting, “This is a revolution!,” and then

In early 2010, the editors at Harper’s Magazine began reviewing a lengthy manuscript submitted by Chris Hedges, a former New York Times reporter. In the piece, Hedges had turned his eye to Camden, New Jersey, one of the most downtrodden cities in the nation. Hedges’s editor at Harper’s, Theodore Ross, who left the magazine in 2011 and is now a freelance writer, was excited when he saw the draft. “I thought it was a great story about a topic—poverty—that nobody covers enough,” Ross said. The trouble began when Ross passed the piece along to the fact-checker assigned to the story. As

It is just about impossible to keep up with all of the Obama administration scandals, but the corruption of the Internal Revenue Service ranks near the top. Unfortunately, it has gone hand in hand with Barack Obama and Eric Holder’s corruption of the Department of Justice. The perversion of law enforcement agencies for political ends is starkly revealed by the fact that in 2010, as part of its effort to stem the Tea Party movement, the IRS gave the FBI disks containing more than 1.1 million pages of documents on Section 501 non-profits, so that the FBI could selectively prosecute

Wikipedia has an article describing the six times Republican politicians suggested impeaching Barack Obama, the most serious of which was a hearing by the House Judiciary Committee “formally titled ‘The President’s Constitutional Duty to Faithfully Execute the Laws,’ that has been viewed as an attempt to begin justifying impeachment proceedings”. (Snip) The problem with the “Obama is unimpeachable” argument is that he has already been impeached as Leader of the Free World. Any observer of Obama’s collapse will have noted his marginalization in international councils. Britain flatly refused to go along with him in enforcing a Red Line in Syria.

Bill Clinton is by far the most admired president of the past quarter century, a new poll shows, underscoring how much he has done to burnish his profile since leaving the White House in 2000. Asked which president of the past 25 years they admired most, some 42% of respondents named Mr. Clinton in the new Wall Street Journal/NBC News/Annenberg Survey. That was more than twice the share that named any other president. The other three presidents of the quarter century all polled about the same: 18% said they most admired President Barack Obama; 17% named George W. Bush; and 16%

Hardly anyone accepts the IRS’ claim to have lost two years of Lois Lerner’s emails. Those most familiar with government record retention requirements, and the technology used, probably are the most skeptical. The supposedly lost emails cover January 2009 to April 2011, the period when Lerner is suspected of targeting conservative groups with heightened and invasive scrutiny. Those emails also pertain to communications Lerner may have had with agencies other than the Internal Revenue Service. That’s key, because many suspect that the Obama White House knew about, and may have coordinated, the targeting.
