The 9/11 Story Told at Bedrock,
Powerful as a Punch to the Gut

New York Times, by Holland Cotter

After a decade marked by deep grief, partisan rancor, war, financial boondoggles and inundation from Hurricane Sandy, the National September 11 Memorial Museum at ground zero is finally opening ceremonially on Thursday, with President Obama present, and officially to the public next Wednesday. It delivers a gut-punch experience — though if ever a new museum had looked, right along, like a disaster in the making, this one did, beginning with its trifurcated identity. Was it going to be primarily a historical document, a monument to the dead or a theme-park-style tourist attraction? How many historical museums are built around an active

I´m sure with time the NYC Socialist Republic will ensure the memorial reflects 9/11 as a significant work-place violence episode or that it was the United States´ fault...

On the morning of October 17, 2012, a cadre of federal agents and sheriff’s deputies in Gainesville, Florida, went to the home of a suspected fossil smuggler named Eric Prokopi and arrested him. As I reported in The New Yorker in January, 2013, the case against Prokopi was unusual and aggressive: it included several counts of felonious smuggling, and characterizations of the defendant as a “one-man black market.” Two months after his arrest, Prokopi pleaded guilty to smuggling the bones of a Tarbosaurus bataar, a Tyrannosaurus rex cousin that lived seventy million years ago in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia, which

California Chrome co-owner slams

California Chrome flamed out in his bid for Triple Crown glory Saturday — and then his irate co-owner launched verbal bombs at the competition. The high drama at the 146th Belmont Stakes began with California Chrome finishing in a dead heat for fourth and ended with a shocking rant by outspoken co-owner Steve Coburn. The cowboy hat-wearing Coburn took aim at the winner Tonalist for cherry-picking races — sitting out the first two legs of the Triple Crown before competing at the Belmont. “That’s the coward’s way out,” he fumed. “It’s not fair to these horses that have been in the game since

For the media, the 2016 presidential race boils down to a contest between Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) for the far right’s affections. And certainly those two candidates are seeing the race in such terms. But the candidates, the media and the GOP at large make a mistake if they ignore Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Yes, Rick Perry. If ambition determined the presidential nominee, Paul and Cruz would have little competition. But the times are much less conducive to their candidacies. The tea party has peaked and appears now influential only in deep-red jurisdictions. President Obama’s foreign

Was Bog Bergdahl, father of deserter Bowe Bergdahl, in contact with Al-Qaeda? And was the US government aware of this? On Google Plus, Robert Bergdahl’s contacts include one “Anissa bint Yusuf Zaid Ibn Youssef.” Via Doug Ross:(Snip for graphic)And just who is Anissa? From this link (translated), she would seem to be a 10-year member of an Al Qaeda technology support team. If you think of the United States of America as a store, its recent decisions and scandals resemble a sale, perhaps a fire sale. Or maybe even a “Going Out of Business” sale. The list of dramatic markdowns is breathtaking. They include trading away five murderous terrorists for a likely Army deserter, an open invitation to tens of thousands of illegal immigrants to cross the Mexican border, and a decision to recognize the terrorist group Hamas as part of the Palestinian government. On the home front, environmental regulations will cost thousands of coal miners their jobs and drive up the cost of

The answer: Shut down debate before it begins. That’s what President Obama tried to do following his trade of five terrorists for one deserter. First he sought to shield

Is Brazil ready for the Cup? Yes, but just barely. All 12 stadiums Brazil built or rebuilt for the Cup have been approved for game play, but half missed completion deadlines, and several are still short on seats and other amenities. In Natal, where the U.S. plays Ghana in its June 16 tournament opener, workers have hung colorful canvas tarps depicting beach scenes over unfinished access ramps. Getting to the games could be a huge challenge, as many major transportation projects, including a promised high-speed rail line between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, have been delayed or abandoned. Alleged deserter Bowe Bergdahl may receive compensation by the U.S. military for being held in captivity by the Taliban for five years, depending on how his status is classified. If Bergdahl is deemed to have been a “POW” and receives military backpay for his time of service, he could claim more than $300,000 from U.S. taxpayers. Military.com breaks down the possible compensation scenarios: Service members designated by the Defense Department as “captive, missing or missing in action” are entitled to receive back pay and allowances, officials said. Monica Wehby, the Republican Senate candidate in Oregon, has fallen prey to a common delusion: that Obamacare can be "fixed." On her campaign website, Wehby, a surgeon, runs through a list of changes she wants made to the president´s health-care overhaul. She would, among other things, get rid of the individual mandate to buy health insurance, offer more catastrophic insurance options on the exchanges and make it easier for people to buy insurance across state lines. But she also wants to keep several Affordable Care Act provisions, including the one that bans insurers from discriminating against people with pre-existing health conditions. You can

The street had a crosswalk that was not governed by traffic lights, leaving the onus to stop with the driver, according to The Huffington Post. Hi, everybody. This is commencement season, a time for graduates and their families to celebrate one of the greatest achievements of a young person’s life. But for many graduates, it also means feeling trapped by a whole lot of student loan debt. And we’ve got to do more to lift that burden. See, in a 21st century economy, the surest pathway into the middle class is some form of higher education. The unemployment rate for workers with a bachelor’s degree is just 3.3 percent — about half what it is for high school graduates. The typical graduate of a four-year college earns $15,000 more per year than someone with just a high school degree.

U.S. fertility is not recovering from the financial crisis — and demographers aren’t sure why. The fertility rate fell to a record low 62.9 births per 1,000 women aged 15-44 in 2013, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. The total number of births, at 3.96 million, inched up by a mere 4,000 from 2012, the first increase since the financial crisis. But the total fertility rate, or TFR, the average number of children a woman would have during her child-bearing years, fell to just 1.86, the lowest rate in 27 years.
