Jacqueline Kennedy’s private letters, chronicling her previously unknown relationship with an Irish priest, sat untouched in a college safe for 50 years, before an antiques roadshow brought them to light. The New York Times dismissed Jill Abramson as executive editor on Wednesday, replacing her with Dean Baquet, the managing editor, in an abrupt change of leadership. Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr., the publisher of the paper and the chairman of The New York Times Company, told a stunned newsroom that had been quickly assembled that he had made the decision because of “an issue with management in the newsroom.” (Snip) Mr. Baquet becomes the first African-American to serve as The Times’s executive editor. Ms. Abramson’s hiring also made history — she was the first woman to run the newspaper. Her dismissal,

The long-planned September 11 museum is due to open for the first time tomorrow when President Obama and relatives of the victims are welcomed into the site in lower Manhattan. Heart-wrenching artifacts like personal momentos and the mangled steel beams from the collapsed towers are among the most moving displays. The museum will open to the public on May 21 but the President will be on hand, along with a number of New York politicians, for the dedication ceremony on Thursday. SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO - The steel and glass museum houses more than 10,000 artifacts, 23,000 photographs, 1,900 oral histories

Bill Clinton did more today than defend his wife, Hillary Clinton, from recent accusations leveled by GOP strategist Karl Rove that she suffered brain damage after falling in December 2012. The former president revealed that his wife’s injury “required six months of very serious work to get over,” he said during a question-and-answer session at the Peterson Foundation in Washington. “They went to all this trouble to say she had staged what was a terrible concussion that required six months of very serious work to get over,” he said. “It’s something she never low-balled with the American people, never tried

In the wake of New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson’s unexpected decision to step down from her position Wednesday, several questions linger. Was Abramson forced out? Where will she go next? How will her departure affect operations for one of America’s most prestigious news outlets? Most of all, what will Abramson do with her New York Times tattoo? The existence of the tattoo was made public last month, when Abramson appeared on Catie Lazarus’ podcast Employee of the Month to discuss her position at the Times. In between discussions about Nate Silver’s departure and the challenging transition from reporter

Saira Blair will graduate from a West Virginia high school later this month. She posts photos of her smoothie habit on Instagram, volunteers at the Martinsburg VA hospital and helps raise money for the Make-a-Wish foundation. She will not be eligible to vote until July. But on Tuesday, she beat a sitting state delegate who was seeking a third term in office. With all 13 precincts in her Martinsburg-area district reporting, Blair beat state Del. Larry Kump (R) by an 872-728 vote margin. Blair campaigned on an antiabortion, pro-Second Amendment platform, offering her cellphone number to constituents and pledging not

(Four-minute Video) Hillary supporters are ready for a “new, fresh face” in office and that entails checking the vital two boxes of “Democrat” and “first female president.” I mean, what else is there? Qualifications? Those are for dysfunctional countries heading down the wrong track. Bonus giggle/giant face desk: One supporter thinks Hillary was “remarkably adept” at handling “Benghazi.” At least he doesn’t think that’s the new take-out place

Or the fact that he´s just been interviewed about his company in front of a couple hundred tech enthusiasts in an Austin bar at the South by Southwest Interactive festival, where half the audience was concerning itself with throwing back tequila, searching for the free T-shirts, or exchanging business cards. Another day, another milestone: President Obama´s 1,000th trip aboard Air Force One. The president hit the millennial mark with Wednesday´s trip to New York, according to Mark Knoller of CBS News, who keeps meticulous White House records. Obama´s airplane pace is behind that of predecessor George W. Bush, who took 1,675 flights on Air Force One during his eight years in office, Knoller reports. The current president is in New York for two days as he delivers an infrastructure speech, headlines a pair of Democratic fundraisers, and helps dedicate the new 9/11 museum.

A slow-motion and irreversible collapse of a massive cluster of glaciers in Antarctica has begun, and could cause sea levels to rise across the planet by another 4 feet within 200 years, scientists concluded in two studies released Monday. Researchers had previously estimated that the cluster in the Amundsen Sea region of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet would last for thousands of years despite global climate change. But the new studies found that the loss is underway now as warming ocean water melts away the base of the ice shelf, and is occurring far more rapidly than scientists expected. The

It´s a fact of American life that a good share of the electorate is disappointed, disapproving and even disdainful of President Obama. What´s less certain are the reasons why. For some Democrats, the explanation is simple: race. In recent weeks, West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller, Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson and former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist have all said racism is the driving force behind Republican resistance to the president. Republicans, unsurprisingly, say their disdain for Obama is based not on the color of his skin, but on the content of his policies. The Obama administration’s “hashtag diplomacy” has been under criticism for some time, though condemnation of its participation in the campaign to rescue the girls kidnapped by Nigeria’s Islamist terror group Boko Haram–tweeting messages along with the tag #BringBackOurGirls–was especially voluble this weekend. I agree with Jonathan on First Lady Michelle Obama’s decision to join the hashtag campaign: it’s harmless; she’s a political celebrity without the power to do more than speak out anyway; and while she certainly can simply tell her husband to “bring back our girls” in private, doing so publicly is more meaningful, and possibly more effective. However, it

The huge West Antarctic ice sheet is starting a glacially slow collapse in an unstoppable way, two new studies show. Alarmed scientists say that means even more sea level rise than they figured. The worrisome outcomes won´t be seen soon. Scientists are talking hundreds of years, but over that time the melt that has started could eventually add 4 to 12 feet to current sea levels. A NASA study looking at 40 years of ground, airplane and satellite data of what researchers call ´the weak underbelly of West Antarctica´ shows the melt is happening faster than scientists had predicted, crossing

After successfully bringing more than 30% of the U.S. economy — the health care and financial services industries — under political control during his first term, President Obama made it clear last week that a priority of his second term is to go after the energy sector — another 10.5%. The purpose of the White House´s orchestrated release of the National Climate Assessment on May 7 was to set the stage to drive energy markets and fossil fuels under the heel of more government regulation. Most Americans would celebrate knowing that the U.S. is on the cusp of oil and

A U.S. congressman from Florida was caught last week digging his finger in his ear and then eating whatever it was he found. Representative Joe Garcia was at a May 7 House Judiciary Committee hearing on government surveillance, but it was his own reconnaissance mission that C-SPAN footage has now revealed. It was a live shot, in fact, and the Key West congressman had the poor timing to undertake his treasure hunt while sitting directly behind his colleague as she took the floor. Before the cameras have left him, the first term Democrat even looks at his fingers before putting

Russia is to deny the US future use of the International Space Station beyond 2020 and will also bar its rocket engines from launching US military satellites as it hits back at American sanctions imposed over Ukraine crisis. Russia’s deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin announced a series of punitive measures on Tuesday against the US in response to sanctions imposed after Russia annexed Crimea. The two countries have long cooperated closely on space exploration despite their clashes in foreign policy. The Space Station is manned by both American and Russian crew, but the only way to reach it is by using Russia’s Soyuz
