2+2=What? Parents say Common Core
curriculum makes kids´ math homework
needlessly confusing

Associated Press, by Michael Rubinkam

Original Article

Posted By:John c, 5/15/2014 2:54:55 AM

An Iowa woman jokingly calls it "Satan´s handiwork." A California mom says she´s broken down in tears. A Pennsylvania parent says it "makes my blood boil." What could be so horrible? Grade-school math. As schools around the U.S. implement national Common Core learning standards, parents trying to help their kids with math homework say that adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing has become as complicated as calculus. They´re stumped by unfamiliar terms like "rectangular array" and "area model." They wrestle with division that requires the use of squares, slashes and dots. They rage over impenetrable word problems.

Comments:
A nightmare for public schools and I am amazed that parochial schools adopted this garbage by choice.

In my book, simple math functions do not need to be wrapped up in fanciful gobbledegook decriptions. First there was New Math, then came Fuzzy math and now this latest interest deterring silliness. Are the people writing curricula just working on job security? There must be a money trail here somewhere.

It´s quite simple, the goal of our Marxist-Progressive overlords is to completely gut the learning process and utterly destroy the parent-child educational relationship. This levels unfair privilege-based "Intelligence Inequality" by making everybody as bone-jarringly stupid as the lowest common denominator minority groups haunting the school systems.

They´ve got to be stopped and I mean stopped HARD by any means necessary!

Heard two things last nite:

One, what Bill Gates had to say on a video (National Conf. of State Legislature in Philadelphia in 2009) posted on Glenn´s site, where Bill Gates talked about a "large uniform base of customers". If anyone doesn´t think Common Core is not about selling product to conform to the mind-numbing Common Core curriculum, there´s a bridge in Brooklyn...

But watching Gates, the quintessential technocrat, I realized that if Common Core gets fully implemented from K thru 12 that we will have a generation of conforming Bill Gates personalities being formed to their specifications as if they were computer chips.

Second thing I heard was a program where Fulton Sheen, a really Master Teacher, was dissecting the poem, "The Hound of Heaven" by Francis Thompson. And religion aside, I´d rather our children be taught by someone who has a soul opening up their minds to the truth that they have a soul as well.

Common Core doesn´t educate; it seeks to indoctrinate - bad idea.

What happened to addition, subtraction and division? Not too long ago I needed to divide something so I did and a young fella asked me what I was doing? Tells me a lot about today´s education.

When will these morons learn to leave well enough alone? As with Obamacare, every "advance" takes us further backward.

Reset your thinking.

Common Core is NOT about bettering education in any way.

What it IS represents the continued dumbing down of our institutions to yield sheeple.

Got that? If you don´t get it you are doomed!

Was appalled to see that Michelle Reeve (sp?) backs Common Core. She obviously does not understand how bad the teaching materials are nor the need to keep local control of schools. How does the Nat´l gov´t make rules for my area...a central core of academia surrounded by (good) rural schools that meet both academic and technological needs of the students? Do they teach basic life skills such as managing finances and good social science? Civics? Furthermore, while there are many smart teeachers out there, my experience is that many are not capable of doing the elaborate math methods used. (I had to struggle thru New Math myself and spent most of my Masters´ study time on that course that term and then never used it).

Kids need to know how to add, subtract, multiply and divide (one way is enough) so they can buy stuff, make change and get through grammar and middle school and perhaps get a job at McDonalds in high school. If they can do arithmetic they´ll be able to handle geometry and algebra and science high school courses which is about as far in mathematics that 95% of them will go. There is no need for them to learn arithmetic through an application of the theory of numbers. Rote learning and algorithmic methods are perfectly acceptable and hard enough for most of them. They´ll learn number theory if they go for a math degree in college.

By the way the new math isn´t new. It was around in the sixties and got the same reaction then that it´s getting now. I thought it had failed and was discontinued but I thought wrong. Here it is again.

With all the electronic aids (called brains when I was young) why is it necessary to perform basic arithmetic? Everyone I know uses some kind of aid. When I was in high school we multiplied numbers using logarithms; which is certainly no longer necessary. Occasionally, I like to read Euclid´s elements which makes my head hurt. But it´s good for me. And Euclid wasn´t into multiplication tables. My bone to pick with education is reading and writing which many of them simply can´t do. Computers can do math but creative writing is a problem.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, whose stumping for the “hammered” middle class has won fanatical progressive support, clearly has ambitions far beyond Congress’ upper chamber, her demurring about a 2016 presidential bid notwithstanding. She now has a perfect opportunity to boost her profile and expand her own fan base beyond her party’s left wing. All she has to do is get on board the Hillary train. Because odd as it may seem, Hillary Clinton needs Liz Warren. And Liz Warren needs Hillary Clinton. Just days into her unofficial first campaign blitz — thinly disguised as a book tour — Hillary’s ham-handed attempts

House Speaker Robert DeLeo’s new proposal to reduce gun violence has barely emerged with a favorable report from a legislative committee, foreshadowing a potentially turbulent reception in the full House and Senate. (SNIP) The bill (H 4121) has been on the fast track since DeLeo filed it on May 27. The close vote follows a lengthy committee hearing last Tuesday, when supporters said the bill will curb gun violence and opponents countered that the bill unfairly imposes hardships on legal gun owners, while not focusing enough on illegal gun owners. The bill, created with the aid of a task force
