Federal probe could leave
Utah ATV protest riders
facing charges

Federal agents have launched a damage inspection of protected archeological sites in southern Utah where public-lands activists on all-terrain vehicles staged a weekend protest ride challenging the prolonged government closure of a canyon trail. Undercover agents from the Bureau of Land Management monitored the Recapture Canyon rally and documented cases in which ATV riders broke the law by venturing into an area off-limits to motorized use, BLM spokeswoman Megan Crandall said on Tuesday. "At the end of the BLM´s investigation, all evidence will be referred to the U.S. Attorney´s Office for potential civil or criminal action," she said.

The fuse that was lit at the Bundy Ranch continues to burn. It IS connected to a powder keg.

Isn´t there a wildlife sanctuary on the Arizona border that is now closed to American´s because of the drug cartels running about on ATV´s? That seems like a good place for LEO´s to concentrate on.

Ok, I´ll offer the alternate view, or at least a slightly different take. Maybe some posters don´t know the damage ATVs and other motorized vehicles can do to fragile off-road terrain. The ranchers in my west Texas region bar them except for ranch maintenance such as feeding and fence repairs. We never allow them in for recreational activities. The PR problem the BLM has now, however, is people doubt their motives. Was it really to protect a delicate terrain or was it just to exercise control? A trail closed to motorized vehicles should remain available to hikers and horseback riders, I would think.

The trail in question is still open to hikers and horseback riders. It was closed to ATV use in 2007.

#4, Right. The issue is exactly that. A lot of people are unhappy with BLM or Washington and won´t miss a chance to show it.

Riding an ATV on federal land may be fun, you may have done it for years, but I don´t see it as a contractual or constitutional right.

The Bundy case is a legal dispute about - mostly - implied rights. It was badly handled, the BLM tried to bully then wisely stopped just before shooting started.

The NM fencing dispute can be sorted out. The cattle need water and the BLM should just watch them drink it until the courts have made a final ruling.

Why Does Obama Want

As his policies, foreign and domestic, are collapsing on pretty much every front, President Obama has increasingly sought refuge in talk about global warming. He wants the U.S. to reduce its emissions of carbon dioxide, and the EPA has done its best to bring this about via increasingly stringent regulations on coal-fired power plants. The Democrats wanted to enact cap-and-trade, but couldn’t get it through Congress, so Obama is doing the best he can through administrative action. Simultaneously, the administration has poured billions of dollars into specious “green” energy projects, many of which can’t be kept alive even with lavish

This past April, with the help of a knowledgeable reader, we took a deep dive into the fossil fuel investments of Democratic money man and environmental poseur Tom Steyer in “The epic hypocrisy of Tom Steyer.” Introducing our reader’s report, John wrote regarding Steyer: “Today, he is a bitter opponent of fossil fuels, especially coal. That fits with his current economic interests: banning coal-fired power plants will boost the value of his solar projects. But it was not always thus. In fact, Steyer owes his fortune in large part to the fact that he has been one of the world’s

The Wall Street Journal editorial page predictably bemoans the collapse of immigration reform and, equally predictably, insinuates that Democrats conspired to help kill it in order to benefit politically. (Favoring cooperation with President Obama on anything requires conservatives to argue that the president secretly hopes the measure will fail.) But the real news comes in the seventh paragraph, when the Journal reports that House Republicans were actually poised to pass a bill before Eric Cantor´s loss freaked them out: ... a majority of GOP Members wanted an immigration reform to pass as long as they didn´t have to vote for

Where Are Libertarians

Every major strand of American conservatism includes a strong libertarian streak, because the value of liberty is fundamental to just about all conservative thought. But today, especially, is said to be the libertarians’ moment. What once was a fringe movement, politically speaking, has moved front and center in our political life. And yet, in my view, libertarians of both the capital L and small l varieties punch below their weight. They have not contributed as much as they should to the conservative movement. This is partly because libertarians tend to founder on foreign policy, where many are merely modern-day isolationists. But

Great question, with the best answer being ZIRP, the Federal Reserve’s “zero interest rate policy,” now matched by many other central banks (with some actually now employing negative interest rates). The Israeli government has confirmed reports initially surfacing at the Associated Press and the New York Times that the bodies of three Israeli teenagers reported missing earlier this month have been found. The Israeli cabinet is conducting an emergency meeting on the matter. Officials are confident that they have found the bodies of Naftali Frenkel, Gilad Shaar, and Eyal Yifrach, who went missing in the West Bank earlier this month. Frenkel, a U.S. Citizen, and Shaar were 16 years old; Yifrach was 19. “They know it’s the three, they will know for sure after they do the autopsy," said an Israeli official to the newspaper on the condition of anonymity. He noted that the children appear to have been killed close to the time of kidnapping and had gunshot wounds. Israel's Haaretz newspaper added that the Israeli government was officially conducting a media blackout until all the details were confirmed.

If you are a disgruntled intelligence officer or official and want to undermine a program or aid enemies of the United States, Risen is the go-to guy. Risen’s accomplishments in this area have been overshadowed by the emergence of Edward Snowden, but Risen should not be forgotten. We know of two valuable national security programs that Risen (writing with his colleague Eric Lichtblau) and the Times destroyed by their disclosure of them. One involved the NSA’s ability to intercept al-Qaeda related communications of terrorists operating abroad.
