Pryor Turns to Seniors
in Ark. Senate Resurgence

Real Clear Politics, by Caitlin Huey-Burns

Original Article

Posted By:Toledo, 5/14/2014 7:51:11 AM

At the start of the 2014 election cycle, Mark Pryor´s future in the Senate was widely considered as dead as the raccoons at the Gillett Coon Supper, an annual fundraiser and gathering spot for Arkansas pols. The two-term Democrat’s seat is viewed as a top pickup prospect for Republicans, who hope to control the Senate next year. Given President Obama’s low approval rating and the state’s red hue, Pryor seemed doomed. But recent national polls that show him leading once-formidable GOP challenger Tom Cotton have given hope to Democrats -- and have observers wondering how this could be. (The RCP Average

Pryor, or his handlers, have resorted to scaring senior adults. The ads tell us Tom Cotton is trying to take away their Social Security and their Medicare. He is trying, so the ads say, to delay Medicare benefits to age 70. Ditto for Social Security. The ones most frightened are the folks over 70 who have had their benefits for years.

Yes, Mark Pryor is looking out for his constituents. He is a do nothing Senator who holds his daddy´s old Senate seat. He thinks he is entitled to the Senate seat because of his daddy. No doubt half of the Dems in Arkansas believe David Pryor is still the Senator. Mark Pryor (D-My Father´s Seat)

In S.F., Rick Perry compares

San Francisco Chronicle, by David R. Baker    Original Article

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, speaking in San Francisco on Wednesday night, said the U.S. would better serve its diverse population by letting the states handle many economic and social policies, a point he perhaps inadvertently drove home when he compared homosexuality to alcoholism. Addressing the Commonwealth Club of California, Perry argued the federal government should give up much of its policy-making power, letting states chart their own courses on issues ranging from business subsidies to abortion. He joked about his frequent habit of luring California companies to Texas and called the competition between the two states healthy for both, as well

Elites Beware: Eric Cantor´s Defeat

WEST CHESTER, Pa.—Expecting House Majority Leader Eric Cantor to win his GOP primary in Virginia, I spent Election Day in Pennsylvania—interviewing angry Republicans, Democrats, and independents about the rise of political populism. I was in the wrong state, but I had the right topic. Cantor´s defeat has less to do with immigration reform than it does with an uneven movement that should frighten conservative and liberal political elites to their shallow cores. Americans see a grim future for themselves, their children, and their country. They believe their political leaders are selfish, greedy, and short-sighted—unable and/or unwilling to shield most people

Here’s all you need to know about Eric Cantor’s stunning loss in the Republican primary for Virginia’s seventh congressional district. For almost as long as I’ve lived here, which is coming up on 20 years now, the purpose of the seventh district has been to re-elect Eric Cantor every two years. It’s a strongly Republican district that spans across a very conservative stretch of rural Central Virginia, from the Richmond suburbs to Culpeper. So what were we going to do, vote for a Democrat? No, we were going to vote for Cantor.

Teachable moment for Clinton

Hillary Clinton’s tone-deaf comments about being “dead broke” after she and her husband left the White House were unfortunate, revealing and — if Clinton chooses to learn from them — instructive for the likely presidential campaign ahead. ABC’s Diane Sawyer asked Clinton about her reported $5 million in speaking fees since leaving the Obama administration, and Bill Clinton’s supposed $100 million pile. “We came out of the White House not only dead broke but in debt,” Clinton responded. “We had no money when we got there and we struggled to, you know, piece together the resources for mortgages for houses, for

More Americans disapprove than approve of the prisoner exchange that freed Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl from Taliban captivity – especially if it’s established that he deserted his post. And if he did desert, nearly three-quarters say Bergdahl should be charged with a crime. Fifty-one percent in this ABC News/Washington Post poll are critical of the deal, in which the Obama administration exchanged five Taliban detainees for Bergdahl; 39 percent approve, and strong disapprovers outnumber strong approvers by 2-1. See PDF with full results, charts and tables here. Moreover, if it’s found that Bergdahl deserted his post before his capture five years ago, as some

WASHINGTON — Hillary Clinton attempted to walk back remarks that she and her husband came out of the White House “dead broke” — saying she knows their life is “obviously blessed.” “Let me just clarify that I fully appreciate how hard life is for so many Americans today,” Clinton said on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Tuesday. “Bill and I were obviously blessed. We worked hard for everything we got in our lives … So for me it’s just a reality what we faced when he got out of the White House, it meant that we just had to keep working really hard.” Her

Since its first introduction into our lexicon, the definition of the word metrosexual has changed several times. At first it was used to describe young, urban males who were more interested in fashion, grooming and appearance than the traditional masculine male. Sexuality ran the gamut from officially gay, straight or bisexual. Then an article in Salon.com by Mark Simpson narrowed it down to the following: "He might be officially gay, straight or bisexual, but this is utterly immaterial because he has clearly taken himself as his own love object and pleasure as his sexual preference." In his book Male Impersonators,

After World War I, Americans had it with European wars. The United States lost 116,516 men and suffered 204,002 casualties, plus 3,350 soldiers were missing in action -- not to mention the monetary expense. The price paid for ignoring the rest of the world was enormous. The death toll in World War II topped 73 million soldiers and civilians, including 420,000 Americans. For while people in the United States focused solely on their own troubles, evil rose and took root in Germany, Italy and Japan. In 1938, America’s allies from World War I were forced to appease Hitler. First, the allies ceded the

President Obama has a new set of critics of his decision to release five suspected terrorists from Guantanamo Bay detention center for Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl — individuals from a population of 300,000 Afghans who literally ran for their lives from Mohammed Fazl in 1999. Local residents are “responding with fear and dismay to the U.S. release of the notorious commander,” who perpetrated a “scorched earth offensive” to obtain control, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. Whether it’s recognizing a Palestinian government that includes Hamas, negotiating with the Taliban, releasing five Guantanamo Bay detainees or imposing new regulations on carbon emissions, one thing is constant: The inner President Obama is being unleashed. During his 2008 campaign, there was a lot of debate over whether Obama was more likely to govern from the left, or more moderately. He spoke a lot about breaking with Washington consensus – the type of thinking that led to the Iraq War, made the U.S. government reflexively pro-Israel, shied away from diplomacy, and failed to address the issue of global warming. We´ve all heard that the law requires the administration to give Congress 30 days notice before releasing prisoners from the U.S. terrorist detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba — a provision the White House willfully ignored in the recent release of five Taliban commandos in exchange for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. But the law — specifically the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2014 — requires much more than that. Congress did not intend for the president to give lawmakers a simple heads-up. Instead, the House and Senate ordered that any such 30-day notification must include: 1) A detailed statement of

Or was this just one of those highly, highly unusual computer crashes that affects only the email account of Lois Lerner and any executive branch official with whom she happened to

BOSTON — Once fearing he would be viewed as "a loser for life" if he failed to win the presidency, Mitt Romney is trying to re-emerge as a force in Republican politics. Romney has quietly sought kingmaker status in the GOP´s fight for the Senate majority this fall and its quest to retake the White House in 2016. The effort at revival is fueling whispers about a third presidential run. But those closest to Romney suggest he´s more interested in shaping party politics by lending his name and record-breaking fundraising machine to what he considers the next generation of electable conservatives. ISIS, the brutal insurgent/terrorist group formerly known as al Qaeda in Iraq, has seized much of western and northern Iraq and even threatens towns not far from Baghdad. From where did ISIS spring? One of George W. Bush´s most toxic legacies is the introduction of al Qaeda into Iraq, which is the ISIS mother ship. If this wasn´t so tragic it would be supremely ironic, because before the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, top Bush officials were insisting that there was an al Qaeda-Iraq axis of evil.
