When Driverless Cars Break the Law
New York Times, by Claire Cain Miller

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 5/14/2014 2:20:48 AM

There is little doubt that the technology behind driverless cars is nearly advanced enough for mainstream use. Google plans to make its biggest public display yet of its cars on Tuesday, when it takes reporters on spins around Mountain View, Calif. Carmakers like BMW and Toyota are also preparing to sell cars that drive themselves. Instead, the bigger question about driverless cars is a legal one. Who is responsible when something goes wrong? Driverless cars are supposed to be much safer than cars driven by people because they don’t make human errors. But accidents seem inevitable. What happens when a driverless car kills someone?

Comments:
Just as important as who is responsible is how would one insure this car?

If the guys at Google are so smart, how come they can´t come up with a plan to keep their out-of-their-minds lib politicians from bankrupting the country.

I´m 73 and been driving since I was 16. I´ve been involved in one accident where I shared blame (backing out, striking another car backing out), and no others where I had any blame at all. I´ve had one speeding ticket. Can a driverless car beat that?

Yes, I´m bragging, but I´m sure there are many others with better records than mine.

I´ll be dead before driverless cars are common.

This whole concept is similar to the new cameras that take pictures of car licence plates as they pass through intersections. A few weeks later the owner of the car gets a ticket in the mail for driving through the intersection against the light. The problem with that was that driving infraction tickets are given to the driver, not the car. A fact that it didn´t take too long for lawyers to notice that and start filing petitions to vacate the ticket.

Its going to be interesting and probably dangerous to see how the cars handle very slippery roads. I-70 west of Denver will probably be closed for the entire winter due to "accidents".

#3, I received one of those tickets in the mail. The license plate was illegible, it was not the model my car is, and it was at an intersection I have never driven through in my life, many miles from my home.

I imagine "driverless cars" will be just about as reliable as that ticket system.

Anaheim, CA - President Obama, appearing emboldened after his recent move to cut carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants, on Saturday ridiculed members of Congress who deny climate change or plead scientific ignorance as an alibi for avoiding an uncomfortable truth. Speaking in gleefully sarcastic terms to a commencement ceremony at the University of California, Irvine, Mr. Obama likened those who deny climate change to people who would have told John F. Members of Congress called on President Obama Sunday to link up with Arab allies and quell a quick-moving crisis in Iraq, where Islamic militants swept toward Baghdad and left a bloody trail in their wake. Republican lawmakers said the administration has sat on the sidelines for too long as sectarian violence threatens to undo what U.S. troops accomplished during the war in Iraq. The bloodshed spurred by militants from an al Qaeda splinter group could topple the country’s fragile government while civil war rages in neighboring Syria, they said, offering a magnet for extremists from Iran and even western nations.
