Haverford commencement

Another commencement speaker has fallen to student protests. Robert J. Birgeneau, former chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley has backed out of speaking at Haverford College’s commencement scheduled for Sunday, following concerns expressed by Haverford students and several professors over his leadership during a 2011 incident when UC police used force on students protesting college costs. Haverford President Daniel H. Weiss announced on Tuesday morning that Birgeneau has declined the college’s invitation to speak and receive an honorary degree. Birgeneau is known for his support of undocumented and minority students, but became controversial when students, as part of the

Comments:
He did not support destructive Occupy protestors during campus protests. Is that the new litmus test? Former lefty chancellor at Berkeley not good enough? Liberal Arts colleges (and most other colleges and universities) are no longer educational institutions (grads need to learn how to say, "do you want to supersize that?"). He would have been forced to accept nine conditions? Ha! Do they realize how absolutely silly they look?

The liberals will soon start eating themselves because even a liberal can´t please everybody all the time. I can´t wait until all liberals are either gingham dogs or calico cats. I´ll just sit and watch like an old Dutch clock.

There may be more to the comment of #2 than one might at first think. At its inception, Nazi ideology was quite fashionable among the "intellectual" and wealthy classes.

I went to Haverford in the 1970s. It was a wonderful place. I had a Russian History professor who absolutely refused to let us get drawn in by the stupidity and propaganda of pro-leftist, Soviet-appeasing, pro-communist morons and I am forever grateful to her for that - and she was not at all politically conservative but recognized fascists regardless of their labels. But there was plenty of idiocy then and plenty now. The student body would probably let the head of state in Venezuela speak even though he beats people up for no reason at all. And Haverford likely would never have admitted me if it could have predicted how I´d turn out in my 50s.

Maybe it´s time to just mail out the diplomas and forget the ceremony. Let the graduate family celebrate with a party at home. Left-wing "diversity" is getting ridiculous.

I had a column on the home-page yesterday about a practical step congressional Republicans could take to combat the rampant presidential lawlessness I’ve documented in Faithless Execution—to wit, they can start impeaching subordinate executive branch officials who have been involved in either (or both) the IRS abuse of Americans over their political beliefs or the cover-up of that constitutional affront, which has involved misleading testimony, destruction of evidence, and obstruction of justice. I also weighed in this morning at PJMedia with a post about House Speaker John Boehner’s feckless plan to confront the president by filing a lawsuit that would

The video was posted to Facebook, a video of teens laughing as one of them goes up to an unarmed 58-year-old man sitting at the Aronimink trolley stop in Upper Darby and punches him square in the jaw. The punch is so hard you can hear it. "It was a violent, vicious, cowardly, punk act," said Upper Darby police Superintendent Michael Chitwood. "He´s lucky he didn´t kill him." Chitwood said the unprovoked violence was part of the "knockout game." "They were conspiring to go in and do the knockout game thing on this guy," he said. "It fits the profile: They plan it, they videotape it and they Facebook it. The whole thing,

With humor and words of admiration, philanthropist Lewis Katz was remembered Wednesday at his beloved Temple University for his loyalty, wide-ranging generosity and devotion to his family. During a more than 2 1/2-hour memorial service at Temple´s Peformance Arts Center, mourners laughed, applauded and wiped away tears at reminisces of Katz - funny, moving, sad. The message over and over again was to keep Katz´s memory and work alive.

Robert Petzel resigned last week as the top health official for the Department of Veterans Affairs, just one day after testifying before a Senate committee that he knew VA health clinics were using inappropriate scheduling practices as early as 2010. Whistleblowers claim the schemes continued until this year, leading to a recent wave of outrage that sent the VA and White House scrambling to correct the alleged problems and restore confidence in the department. Petzel admitted that he knew of the issue after Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) questioned him about the memo below, in which a top VA executive warned

Nearly six months after the disastrous launch of Healthcare.gov, with the website running smoothly and more than five million people signed up as open enrollment heads to a close, a new glitch has come to light: Incorrect poverty-level guidelines are automatically telling what could be tens of thousands of eligible people they do not qualify for subsidized insurance. The error in the federal marketplace primarily affects households with incomes just above the poverty line in states like Pennsylvania that have not expanded Medicaid. The mistake raises the price of their insurance by thousands of dollars, making insurance so unaffordable many

Francis proclaimed, “Despite the large influx of migrants present in all continents and in almost all countries, migration is still seen as an emergency, or as a circumstantial and sporadic fact, while instead it has now become a hallmark of our society and a challenge.” Emmer McCarthy for Vatican Radio said Francis expressed his concern for “the tens of thousands of

The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

“Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security. With Bill on the skids and his wife’s future prospects on the line, it was necessary for the pubic to see the president being punished, said Weekly Standard online editor Daniel Halper in his new book, “Clinton, Inc.: The Audacious Rebuilding of a Political Machine.” “They understood that
