The medical experts who refuse to

How would you view a man who´s stockpiled a lifetime supply of old-fashioned lightbulbs because he believes low-energy bulbs could lead to blindness? You might well dismiss him as dotty. But the man in question, John Marshall, is no crank. In fact, he´s one of Britain´s most eminent eye experts, the professor of ophthalmology at the University College London Institute of Ophthalmology. So concerned is he that he has boxes stacked with old-fashioned incandescent lightbulbs at home. (Snip) Nor is he alone in his concerns about modern lightbulbs. Another eminent British professor, John Hawk, an expert in skin disease, is

LED bulbs are great...no radiation, no heat to speak of and very efficient.

IF Obie wanted to be useful and I seriously doubt he gives a crap, he could take tons of cash from his stash and subsidize purchase of them...his stash is his PERSONAL money, NOT ours!

This type of illumination has been used in commercial buildings for over 50 years. Anyone who works inside a non residential building, is exposed to florescent light all day.

Yes, #1, LED´s are the future. The idiots who initially mandated bulb changes enacted legislation that didn´t have the tech to back it up. LED´s will save their sorry arses. At this point, the best reviews are going to Home Depot´s Cree LED bulbs (disclaimer: I have no affiliation with HD). Buy just one and see if Cree bulbs are as good as I say.

I have a stash of regulars in the attic, in hopes that they last until CFLs are driven out of the market. Hate them and their creepy light, and the health concerns about them were noted years ago but completely ignored.

LED´s are great bulbs, but somewhat harsh. I bought every regular I could find at garage sales when this all started. I´m stocked up for the next 30 years.

Next up a giant government approved bird killing wind farm in my back yard. Got to keep the computers running.

CFL bulbs are OK for closets and garages only. I don´t like LED´s either. Harsh is the word as poster 6 said. I also have a lifetime stockpile of incandescents. If big government police monitor energy use to detect the presence of incandescents, to them I´ll say Molon Labe, in respect to lightbulbs, of course.

#´s 6&7, buy one "soft" Cree, not "daylight" and see. LED´s will only get better and cost less. A side benefit -- the heat from incandescent bulbs is very hard on the switches of regularly-on table lights we use. I have to replace the switches every few years, now they´ll last forever with LED´s.

#3 and #8, I agree about Cree light bulbs. I have been buying them at Home Depot, and have had no problems with them at all. I especially like that they come on at full brightness, unlike CFL´s, which often need a warm-up period.

I have noticed that the price of the Cree lightbulbs is coming down. They´re also great because they fit in any fixture where a regular incandescent bulb would have fit.

Because they use so little wattage, we were able to put much brighter bulbs in some old low-wattage rated fixtures in the basement. Big improvement in brightness with no rewiring.

Because the Cree LED bulbs don´t give off signficant heat, we can use the lamp near the thermostat in the winter again!

I had one CFL bulb and I put it on my enclosed porch light. My security cam could barely see what was on the porch, much less be able to identify a prowler. Took the bulb out, put a 60 watt regular bulb in and I can see everything on the porch. Don´t tell me CFL´s are better.

Don´t have a Home Depot here, I´ll have to check Lowes and see if they have the Cree bulbs.

“New analyses of the human genome establish that human evolution has been recent, copious and regional,” writes Nicholas Wade in his recently published book A Troublesome Inheritance: Genes, Race and Human History. That sounds reasonable, and Wade, a science reporter and editor for many years at Nature and the New York Times, seems an unimpeachable source. But many well-meaning people will regard his words as provocative and even dangerous. For they fatally undermine the idea, widely shared by so-called progressives, that any apparent differences between groups of people are the product of nurture rather than nature, of social conditioning rather than

FOR a generation now, liberals have bemoaned the disappearance of the socially conscious corporation, the boardroom devoted to the common good. Once, the story goes, America’s C.E.O.s recognized that they shared interests with workers and customers; once wages and working hours reflected more than just a zeal for profits. But then came Reagan, deregulation, hostile takeovers, and an era of solidarity gave way to the age of Gordon Gekko, from which there’s been no subsequent escape. There are, however, exceptions: companies that still have a sense of business as a moral calling, which can be held up as examples to

ISIS marching through Iraq has smashed the media’s taboo against criticizing Obama’s foreign policy. Substantive discussions are taking place about why his foreign policy is such a miserable failure. And they mostly miss the point. Liberal journalists still proceed from the fallacy that there was a foreign policy debate between neo-conservative interventionists and liberal non-interventionists. These are a series of digested Bush era talking points that have no relationship to reality since Bush’s foreign policy on Iraq carried over from Bill Clinton. It’s why Hillary gets so uncomfortable when she has to discuss her vote on Iraq.

In April, President Obama told the nation that “marketplace” or “exchange” enrollment, at 8 million customers as of March 31, had exceeded expectations and costs were lower than expected. Many in the news media accepted the selectively released statistics, despite the Obama administration’s record of sometimes providing inaccurate or incomplete information on HealthCare.gov. Even today, the government continues to withhold relevant public information on costs and enrollment requested by Congress and the press under the Freedom of Information Act. In fact, the measure of the Affordable Care Act’s success rests neither with individual anecdotes nor in the Obama administration’s self-assessments.
