Dems mistake 8 million sign-ups
as happiness with Obamacare

Washington Examiner, by Byron York

There´s been a dramatic turnaround in some Democrats´ thinking about Obamacare and the 2014 elections. Where lawmakers once sought to avoid blame for their national health care overhaul, they are now confident, energized and ready to rub the supposed success of Obamacare in their Republican opponents´ faces. At least that´s how the party´s most visible leaders would have it. President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and other top Democrats are urging candidates to run proudly on Obamacare. And in the cheerleading section of the press, Obamacare is not just a benefit for Democrats but a disaster for the GOP.

How many of them are people who lost their old policy due to Obamacare? From reports I have read, about 7 million.

In early August of 2011, a few days after Congress passed a deal to end the debt-ceiling showdown that brought the nation to the brink of credit default, a conservative talk-radio host in the Milwaukee suburbs went on an extended riff about Gwen Moore, the first African American elected to the House from Wisconsin. Moore had missed the debt-ceiling vote, and her office explained that she had been unable to make her way through the massive crowd that gathered to celebrate Gabrielle Giffords’s triumphant return to the floor. This account provided an opening for radio host Mark Belling.

Hillary Clinton took heat for suggesting that her family was "dead broke" after leaving the White House, a remark that made her look out of touch with the working-class voters she´ll need to woo in a presidential campaign. But while her gaffe isn´t likely to resonate beyond the book tour, her party faces challenges in developing an economic message that´s in tune with the pervasive anxiety that nonaffluent Americans face in their daily lives. So far, the Obama administration´s economic message has focused on reducing income inequality and raising the minimum wage—a poll-tested pitch, but one that doesn´t impact the Americans

Who knew that the Obama administration had a penchant for black humor? Earlier this year, in February, President Obama told Bill O’Reilly during an interview on Fox News that there was “not even a smidgen of corruption” in the IRS scandal involving the targeting of conservative nonprofit groups. In July 2103, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew foreshadowed his boss’s nonchalance by insisting that there was “no evidence” that any political appointee had been involved in the scandal. Now we may know why. After months of delay in responding to congressional inquiries, the IRS now claims that, for the period of January 2009

The IRS—remember those jaunty folks?—announced Friday that it can´t find two years of emails from Lois Lerner to the Departments of Justice or Treasury. And none to the White House or Democrats on Capitol Hill. An agency spokesman blames a computer crash. Never underestimate government incompetence, but how convenient. The former IRS Director of Exempt Organizations was at the center of the IRS targeting of conservative groups and still won´t testify before Congress. Now we´ll never know whose orders she was following, or what directions she was giving. If the Reagan White House had ever offered up this excuse,

Pleasantville, Pa. - The homemade sign along state Route 96 in Bedford County could easily be missed if a driver is distracted by the winding curves at the base of the Allegheny Mountains. “Our country is dying. Please pray for all of us,” it says in blue letters on a white board. A bouquet of slightly wilted wildflowers is tied to it with a blue bow. The sign doesn´t blame anyone in particular; no political brand or elected official is named, no familiar tagline from social media or cable news is part of the message. In fact, its poignant words (all lower-case, no wild-hare punctuation) and slightly hidden position in some ways reflect

D id you know babies don´t drink water? Neither did I, until I became a dad. How about the fact that their fingernails are a real problem; you´ve got to file them or cover them with socks or something, so they don´t scratch their little faces. This was a shock to me. Today is my fourth Father´s Day as a dad. And yes, I´ve learned a lot of unexpected things over those four years. But while these practical things exposed my ignorance, it is an altogether different and more spiritual series of fatherhood-related epiphanies that truly astound me. Since the Christian God is presented in a paternal role (in Western culture, at least),

Hillary Clinton didn´t refrain from supporting same-sex marriage for political reasons—before last year, she earnestly believed that marriage equality should be denied to gays and lesbians. That´s the story the 66-year-old Democrat settled on when NPR host Terry Gross pressed her on her views. The admission is easily the most significant in the interview with the former senator, secretary of State, and presidential candidate, though much of the subsequent media attention has focused on the perception that there was a "heated exchange" where Clinton "lashed out" at her interviewer.* The mild tension stemmed from persistent questioning as Clinton obfuscated on

Every day in June, the most popular wedding month of the year, about 13,000 American couples will say “I do,” committing to a lifelong relationship that will be full of friendship, joy, and love that will carry them forward to their final days on this earth. Except, of course, it doesn’t work out that way for most people. The majority of marriages fail, either ending in divorce and separation or devolving into bitterness and dysfunction. Of all the people who get married, only three in ten remain in healthy, happy marriages, as psychologist Ty Tashiro points out in his book The

The way I see it, Hillary Clinton will face three ongoing challenges that could make or break her campaign for the presidency. None of these challenges will be answered in a single speech or interview; the questions will follow her from the day she announces right through to Election Day 2016. These problems will be managed, not solved. Voters will be watching her campaign closely — and the future of the United States could depend on how she confronts these hurdles. 1. Will Clinton run as a symbol, or will she make a credible case that she is willing and able

Maybe President Barack Obama is missing his Harvard days. He definitely seems to have college on the brain. Or maybe he understands that energizing young voters is key to the Democrats’ hopes in the fall election. Obama’s executive action on Monday to ease the student loan burden is his latest foray into higher education and won’t fix the real financial problems that face college students and graduates. Obama has spent the past year trying to manipulate the cost of student loans — while also calling for a college rating rating system he dubbed “datapalooza” and pressuring colleges to take a harder line

What’s happening in Iraq is a disaster and it is astonishing that the Iraqis and the Americans, who have been sharing intelligence, seem to have been caught flat-footed by the speed of the insurgent victories and the army defections. Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki is said to be in a panic. It is hard to be surprised by that, because more than anyone he is to blame for the catastrophe. Mr. Maliki has been central to the political disorder that has poisoned Iraq, as he wielded authoritarian power in favor of the Shiite majority at the expense of the minority Sunnis,

President Obama claims the debate over the Affordable Care Act is "over," but in coming weeks and months expect it to intensify. Health-insurance companies will soon begin releasing preliminary rate estimates for next year´s plans. Industry experts say consumers should once again brace for significantly higher premiums. Fearing the political fallout before November´s elections, the administration last month quietly increased by billions of dollars the "risk corridor" funds that insurance companies can use to staunch their losses. Yet since premium growth has averaged at least 5% over the past five years, it is unlikely the law´s federal subsidies will increase enough to

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – It´s perhaps appropriate that President Barack Obama is vacationing this weekend in California, where the state flag features a roaming grizzly. The restless president, who has compared himself to a caged animal on recent wanderings by declaring the "bear is loose," took a long Father´s Day weekend away with his wife and older daughter. The visit to the desert resort area of Palm Springs is one of the ways Obama has been trying to escape during his sixth year cloistered in the White House. Anaheim, CA - President Obama, appearing emboldened after his recent move to cut carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants, on Saturday ridiculed members of Congress who deny climate change or plead scientific ignorance as an alibi for avoiding an uncomfortable truth. Speaking in gleefully sarcastic terms to a commencement ceremony at the University of California, Irvine, Mr. Obama likened those who deny climate change to people who would have told John F. Members of Congress called on President Obama Sunday to link up with Arab allies and quell a quick-moving crisis in Iraq, where Islamic militants swept toward Baghdad and left a bloody trail in their wake. Republican lawmakers said the administration has sat on the sidelines for too long as sectarian violence threatens to undo what U.S. troops accomplished during the war in Iraq. The bloodshed spurred by militants from an al Qaeda splinter group could topple the country’s fragile government while civil war rages in neighboring Syria, they said, offering a magnet for extremists from Iran and even western nations.
