Clippers´ Sterling slams
Magic Johnson, HIV status

Associated Press, by Staff

Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling repeatedly disparaged Magic Johnson´s HIV-positive status in an interview that aired Monday, saying he was not a fit role model for children and dismissing his work in business and charity. The interview with CNN´s Anderson Cooper was meant to be a mea culpa in Sterling´s first public comments since racist recordings emerged last month and earned him a lifetime NBA ban, but when the subject turned to Johnson, who was mentioned in the recordings, Sterling is anything but apologetic. "He´s got AIDS!" Sterling said loudly at one point, cutting off Cooper as the interviewer

Considering Anderson Coopers sexual proclivity, Sterling might have planned his rant. Sterling is uncouth and cunning, he is not stupid.

I think Sterling has the beginnings of dementia. I´m tempted to feel sorry for the old sleaze, but can´t do it. He´s rich, crass, uncouth and hasn´t a particle of class.

I don´t follow professional basketball and I don´t follow peoples´ sex lives, but I do scan headlines, and it reminds me why I don´t follow professional basketball or peoples´ sex lives. I remember way back in college reading a comment from Friedrich Nietszche about society vomiting its gall and calling it a newspaper. Few things have changed, except perhaps more gall to vomit.

I doubt that Magic Johnson has AIDS. If he´s got HIV, that is not that same as having AIDS. AIDS describes the end-stage of a process of deterioration which may or may not occur in people with HIV. Looking at Magic, he looks as fit as a bull and in no way, shape or form has AIDS.

I´m enjoying this spectacle because I can root against everybody. Sterling isn´t a nice man but neither are any of the others. He´s correct about Magic Johnson and repeated loudly what was said quietly many years ago. And I especially enjoy all the sanctimonious commentators who won´t shut up about Sterling while condemning him like a tent-revival preacher. And the side show of Baba Wawa with the wh*re was icing on the sleazy, adults-only cake.

The elephant in the room no one is paying attention to is the fact that he was illegally taped and this illegal tape went public. And he´s right about Johnson - he´s not a role model for anyone. Sooo, off topic, do we know how the guy running against Aiken was murdered, thereby assuring Aiken ´wins?´

Adam Silver works for black people. The NBA is a black player´s league that has a white fan base. Of course he is going to take the player´s side. Magic has always made me uncomfortable. But to say he is a bad person for trying to hit everything he could in every city he was in would be hypocritical. I was young once and remember trying to hit everything I could too. It is only by the grace of God I don´t have a STD and 5 kids with 5 different woman.

On any kind of Sleaze-o-metric scale, Donald T. Sterling (gotta include the T.)is probably somewhat worse than Magic Johnson, although probably in the same range of sleaziness as Charles Barkely,or Oprah Winfrey and no worse a bigot than LeBrawn James. That being said, I´ll root for Sterling. The man was set up with an illegal phone tap, and coaxed into saying what he said in the mistaken belief he was having a private conversation. For that he should not have his property confiscated from him and publicly shunned as a pariah. Especially in the N.B.A. a fetid nest of bigots racists and vacuous buffoons of the lowest sort. Leave Sterling alone.

Now Johnson is receiving his just do from Sterling and his AIDS baggage is being revisited. Johnson, so high and mighty, cast stones at Sterling and now he´s getting his comeuppance for it?

Behavior like this is the sort of thing that allows children to get guardianship and power of attorney. Someone needs to tell this guy to get off the stage and enjoy the rest of his life.

Let´s see. Adam Silver is an emotion driven excuse for a commissioner. He is afraid of the public and will not allow any criticism of a player by an owner. Donald Sterling is an 80 year-old man that doesn´t like his girlfriend trotting out Magic Johnson because it makes Sterling look bad.

Magic Johnson has worn his HIV as a badge of honor, notwithstanding his despicable behavior in his younger days. Now he would like to purchase the Clippers, and lo and behold, Sterling gets banned after Sterling´s girlfriend set him up with a recording of a private conversation. Shock of shocks that the girlfriend is now Magic Johnson´s special friend.

Adam Silver is a chump, and Magic Johnson appears to have manipulated the girlfriend for his own benefit.

Yes, Magic Johnson is an institution.

Johnson DOES have HIV, which is merely an early stage of AIDS and we all know that. You can have HIV without having AIDS, but you can´t have AIDS withou having HIV.

Johnson DID behave in sordid ways, by his own admission with as many as six women at a time. Sterling didn´t lie about that. Though many, many fellows have done just what Johnson did, that doesn´t mean we hold them (or him) up as examples to follow. They are very much examples of what we do NOT want our sons to grow up to be and do.

Sterling himself remains a nasty, crass, ugly piece of work.

The decision this past week by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to rescind federal trademark protections for the Redskins may ultimately tip the balance in the controversy over the 80-year-old name of Washington’s football team. If so, that would be a shame. Not because there’s insufficient reason to consider the name “disparaging to Native Americans,” as the patent office determined. Many of us recoil at the reference to skin color as a team identity. The problem is that the Redskins case is just the latest example of a federal agency going beyond its brief to inappropriately insert itself in
