Irreversible collapse of
Antarctic glaciers has
begun,studies say

Los Angeles Times, by Scott Gold

A slow-motion and irreversible collapse of a massive cluster of glaciers in Antarctica has begun, and could cause sea levels to rise across the planet by another 4 feet within 200 years, scientists concluded in two studies released Monday. Researchers had previously estimated that the cluster in the Amundsen Sea region of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet would last for thousands of years despite global climate change. But the new studies found that the loss is underway now as warming ocean water melts away the base of the ice shelf, and is occurring far more rapidly than scientists expected. The

I thought that the ship that went to measure the "disappearing" ice sheets got caught in the massive ice flows. Then a ship from Argentine went to rescue and also got stuck. Finally didn´t the U.S. Coast Guard save all the Greenies from dying in the ice?

Irreversible? How did the glaciers get there in the first place?

Meanwhile, arctic ice continues to accumulate and the Himalayan glaciers that were thought to be melting in fact are not melting.

Two points:

1) Why doesn´t my glass overflow when the bourbon melts the ice ball if this is how science works; and

2) If the ice melts the sea will become less saltier raising the freezing point which will stabilize the ice.

Glaciers are always forming and melting. They formed at the beginning of the Ice Age and melted at the end of it, then reformed and melted again as the climate of the Earth oscillated through its natural cycles. These scientists act as if their "findings" are discoveries of events that have never happened before.

At the end of the day, what you have are scientific narcissists who are heavily funded by governments with a legislative agenda based on increasing taxes based on he "climate change" scare.

The size of the ice shelf in Antarctica is 26% bigger than the average so far this year, which is a record amount of ice for the region. Note that they claim that the loss of ice is underneath the ice where nobody can see it, not even them. They infer ice loss by laundering their data through a computer model.

Whenever observations go against their global warming theory they move the important changes to places where they can´t be confirmed or observed -- the deep ocean, the under side of the ice sheet, and they just make stuff up by tooling around with computers. It´s a regular con game.

While I remain skeptical about the anthropogenic origin of "Climate Change", the ice cube in a glass melting not overflowing the glass is not an appropriate analogy. The majority of the ice in the Antartic is held over land, so if it does melt, it would add to the volume of seawater (while a melting ice cube does not.)

Irreversible eh? Well then knock off all the ban fossil fuel nonsense because it won´t help. Meanwhile in a thousand years we will be well into the next ice age so any warming we can generate will be welcomed. The oceans will never rise as far as they indicate because glaciers will start to grow all over the planet and deposit all that extra water on land in the form of a growing ice cap.

One study was done by scientists , geologists,
glaciologists and other scientific professionals from UC Irvine and NASA´s Jet Propulsion Lab .
The results will be published in the journal of the American Geophysical Union.
The other study was done by scientists from the University of Washington and those results will be published in the journal Science.
The UCI-JPL scientists used satellite radar data
from the past 40 years to study the Amundsen Sea glaciers.
The imaging can measure changes on the earth´s surface
to within a quarter of an inch.
The University of Washington scientists studied the Thwaites glaciers.
Both studies concluded that the glaciers are eroding underneath at the grounding lines ,
which destabilizes the foundations.
This has the potential to begin a cascade of glacial collapse because once one foundation goes,
it destabilizes the next foundation.
The authors concluded that glacial collapse is obviously not imminent , could take hundreds
of years and could be reversed.
Limbaugh and other skeptics should finance a scientific expedition to Antarctica , if they want to seriously refute the evidence and data collected by scientists.
Describing professionals who have years of training and extensive backgrounds as mere liars and hoaxers simply because
you don´t like their findings,
is not the way to advance your argument.

"...irreversible collapse of a massive cluster of glaciers in Antarctica has begun, and could cause sea levels to rise across the planet by another 4 feet within 200 years"

Yeah. And if all the water INSIDE the earth escapes and irreversibly joins up with all the water already in the oceans, then sea levels across the planet could rise by, what, 200 feet within 4 years? And if all the water conjectured to be in comets irreversibly shows up, then sea levels across the planet could rise by – a mile? ten miles?

Those bergs are irreversibly collapsing only in the sense that their own specific molecules are arranged in their present configuration at their present location in time and space. They can go ahead and collapse, because other bergs will replace them with other molecules of water (and perhaps some of the very same molecules!) configured similarly in that same place, though at a different time.

Whew! One has to waste so much energy correcting Lefty pseudoscience, partial truths and bogus claims.

#42 (GreatPlains), don’t believe all these scientists and professionals who’ve spent years at their trade, because all are funded by institutions that have a vested interest in the global warming/climate change idea. Credentials do not science make.

Also, you miss the point: The clear implication of this article is that AGW is to blame. You can deny that if you wish but you know it’s so. And THAT is what this article has drawn so many jeers.

Also, you say something about reversibility though the article cites scientists that this ice-melting pheomenon is irreversible. Which is wrong, you or they?

Thad Cochran’s political resurrection began with a campaign shakeup and ended with a Hail Mary television ad. Just three weeks ago, in the dead of night on June 3, the Mississippi senator’s staff sat shaken and dejected, crestfallen at the results of a primary that deprived the six-term incumbent of an electoral majority. With Cochran forced into a runoff fight against an aggressive and energetic challenger, a dark mood shadowed his backers in Washington and Mississippi.Yet almost immediately, the Cochran coalition began bouncing back. There are plenty of circumstances in which that pithy imperative —variously attributed to Disraeli, Queen VIctoria, and sundry other worthies — wins my admiration. “Never apologize, never explain”: I like the blunt, no-nonsense aroma it exudes, the hinted-at announcement that there will be no wallowing in unproductive self-recriminations or manufactured displays of contrition. The Emergency Alert System, the latest version of a program first established in 1951, blasts out emergency messages in the event of local weather emergencies, but can also be used to warn Americans about terror attacks and major natural disasters. In his message to the “Mexico/Holy See Colloquium on Migration and Development,” Pope Francis characterized the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants that have crossed the U.S. southern border as a product of globalization, suggesting that the phenomenon is happening worldwide. Francis proclaimed, “Despite the large influx of migrants present in all continents and in almost all countries, migration is still seen as an emergency, or as a circumstantial and sporadic fact, while instead it has now become a hallmark of our society and a challenge.” Emmer McCarthy for Vatican Radio said Francis expressed his concern for “the tens of thousands of

The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

“Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security. John McCain, an immigration hawk. Who knew? Mr. McCain, the highest-profile Republican of the U.S. Senate’s “Gang of Eight” that came up with amnesty as the solution to the immigration crisis — and it truly is a crisis — is finally taking a hard line against President Obama for his encouraging the tidal wave of illegal aliens swamping the southwestern border. “There has to be a halt to this,” Mr. McCain thundered Sunday on CNN. “That’s what we want, and the best way to do that is for planeloads of these young people to be returning to their country of origin

Contrary to what those who defend the right to own high-powered assault rifles believe, not all guns are created equal. Due to a combination of availability, portability and criminal usage the following five types of guns are the country's most dangerous. School Shootings: Widely Reported Tragedies Since 2000 - Using firearm trace data from the ATF, as well as FBI homicide records, we determined the types of guns most often recovered from crime scenes and/or used in murders. The numbers are stark: According to the FBI's 2012 Crime in the US data, nearly 70 percent of homicides for which the FBI received weapons data involved the use

It had to come sometime, and it came in one very bad week for the Democrats: that the many big problems with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama finally grew too great for the press to ignore. Obama in his own different way is heading towards Nixon-like levels of weirdness, as, beaten down by the failures regarding his ventures, he appears to have quit his own job. A.B. Stoddard of the Hill says in effect he has stopped being president and chooses to live in a world of his own, shutting out the problems that have become overwhelming, giving dinners where he talks

Senate Budget Committee ranking member Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) has warned all of his colleagues in Congress that President Barack Obama’s new immigration strategy—his plans to legalize millions of illegal alien adults through executive power—could destroy America as we know it. “I write to inform you of a development that threatens the foundation of our constitutional Republic,” Sessions, Congress’s top immigration hawk, wrote in a letter that was hand-delivered to all 535 members of Congress on Monday and provided exclusively to Breitbart News. Sessions cites a recent report from the National Journal, in which reporter Major Garrett detailed how, despite the ongoing

Attorney General Eric Holder encouraged Americans not to forget race while working for justice and equality in their country. “As it stands, our society is not yet color blind -- nor should it be -- given the disparities that still afflict and divide us.” Holder explained, “We must be color brave, and we must never forget that all are made better and more prosperous if all are given equal opportunities.” Holder made his remarks during a speech at Howard University on Tuesday for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Civil Rights Act. “We must take into account not only the

WASHINGTON — It was an enduring image of his presidency: a chastened Bill Clinton walking his dog while wife Hillary keeps her distance as the family leaves town at the height of the Monica Lewinsky scandal — but it was all part of a contrived public-repentance campaign, according to a new book. With Bill on the skids and his wife’s future prospects on the line, it was necessary for the pubic to see the president being punished, said Weekly Standard online editor Daniel Halper in his new book, “Clinton, Inc.: The Audacious Rebuilding of a Political Machine.” “They understood that
