Rams drafting Michael Sam
could impact Missouri law

ST. LOUIS - The Rams´ decision to draft Michael Sam could actually have huge legal implications for gay couples and employees across the state of Missouri. The Rams drafting Sam has raised some deeper issues about openly gay athletes in sports and in the workplace in general. Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) posted on Twitter: "Michael Sam could still be fired for just being gay according to MO law. Let´s fix that in Jeffcity."The board president of the LGBT Community Center of Metropolitan St. Louis, Dara Strickland, is also a family law attorney. She says an individual can be refused employment because

McCaskill misses the flip side: Pass the law and the Rams must prove they did not cut him for his gaiety after he files a complaint with the state or EEOC. The burden of proof is always on the employer once a prima facie case is shown; i.e. Sam is gay and discharged.

Poster 2´s spot on. The idea here is to make him a protected class. The Rams would have to prove why Sam is cut to a commission.

Many yeas ago found it´s best to never hire anyone you couldn´t fire - no relatives or friends. Seems like the goal here is to mak Sam "unfireable".

The Colorado Rockies weren´t the only ones shut out last night. According to Nielsen, only 52,000 people saw Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw no-hit the Rockies Wednesday night. It´s not that the Dodgers have lame fans. The numbers were low because the majority of the market doesn´t have access to SportsNet LA, the new team-owned channel that is distributed by Time Warner Cable and currently only available to those subscribers. Other distributors, including satellite broadcasters DirecTV and Dish Network and cable operators Cox and Charter have not signed deals to carry SportsNet LA. At issue is the price Time Warner Cable is charging for

In 2003, The New Republic caused a mild stir when it published a rant by Jonathan Chait titled "Mad About You: The case for Bush hatred." (The subheadline doesn´t appear on TNR´s website.) At the moment, Chait, now with New York magazine, is the voice of reason on the left--which means, of course, that the debate in which he´s involved is an exceedingly stupid one. Chait´s piece yesterday on the New York website is in part a response to a Wall Street Journal op-ed by Dick Cheney and Liz Cheney (she is his daughter) in which they accuse President Obama of having "betrayed our past and squandered our freedom."

On the scoreboard in right field, it was 10:08 p.m. in the City of the Angels. And a crowd of 46,069 had just sat in to see the best pitcher in baseball throw the first no-hitter of his career. Clayton Kershaw, who reminds us of Sandy Koufax with every flash of greatness, did it with a flurry. (Snip) Never in major league history had a pitcher given up neither a hit nor a walk while striking out 15. The only pitcher with more strikeouts in a no-hitter: Nolan Ryan, the all-time strikeout leader. Kershaw is so respected that his teammates lined up in front of the dugout to listen to his postgame television interview.

Baghdad, Iraq -- Iraq´s military claimed Wednesday to have driven back militants who stormed the country´s main oil refinery in the town of Baiji, the latest front in the battle for control of swaths of Iraq. Iraqi forces killed 40 militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, said Iraqi military spokesman Gen. Qasem Atta, in a televised news conference. Baiji is 225 kilometers (140 miles) north of Baghdad, the capital. "The situation in Tal Afar, Samarra, and Baiji is under control," Atta said. After receiving all those long-distance Father’s Day hugs from his girls, Gwynn will place a call right back to the West Coast to deliver some Father’s Day love of his own. “I always try to get in an I love you,” he said. “For a while

Baghdad - Al-Qaeda offshoot the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) on Sunday published a series of gruesome photos to one of the group’s Twitter accounts that purported to show the jihadists executing dozens of men in Iraq’s Salahuddin province, north of Baghdad. The graphic photos showed men in civilian clothes lying face down, shoulder to shoulder, with their hands bound in a ditch surrounded by yellow fields, as a row of masked fighters fired into the ditch. Blood pooled from one man’s head. It was impossible to verify the authenticity of the photos. By Sunday afternoon, Twitter appeared to have suspended the account.

There is no question among researchers that fathers who spend time with their children instill self-control and social skills in their offspring. Exactly how dads do that, however, is largely a mystery. Thousands of studies have sliced and diced the benefits for children of a close, nurturing bond with Mom. Researchers have a harder time analyzing the ways fathers interact with children, such as rough-and-tumble play. (Snip)Animal studies, however, show that baby rats deprived of rough-and-tumble are more aggressive and lack social skills as adults.

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Patent Office ruled Wednesday that the Washington Redskins nickname is "disparaging of Native Americans" and that the team´s federal trademarks for the name must be canceled. The 2-1 ruling comes after a campaign to change the name has gained momentum over the past year. The team doesn´t immediately lose trademark protection and is allowed to retain it during an appeal. Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has refused to change the team´s name, citing tradition, but there has been growing pressure including statements in recent months from President Barack Obama, lawmakers of both parties and civil rights groups.

In what some see as the first step to forcing the Washington Redskins football team to change their name, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Wednesday cancelled six federal trademarks of the team name because it´s “disparaging” to Native Americans. “Petitioners have shown by a preponderance of the evidence that a substantial composite of Native Americans found the term REDSKINS to be disparaging,” said the decision. Fans, however, won’t see any immediate change — even if Daniel Snyder’s team eventually loses in court. That’s because all the order will do is eliminate the trademark the team has on merchandise. The Redskins are expected to appeal.

Hillary Clinton´s minions are hard at work assembling a political machine and fine tuning it for another go at the White House. Mrs. Clinton is doing her part preparing for a run as well, churning out a bland memoir about the "hard choices" she faced as secretary of state and coyly positioning herself (again) as the inevitable nominee of the party. But after the troubled beginning to her book tour, we´re beginning to see the reasons why Hillary may eventually decide to pull the plug on a 2016 presidential run. Here are five: 1) She´s just not that good at campaigning. If the last two gaffe-prone weeks have reminded us of anything about Hillary,
