DONETSK, Ukraine -- Pro-Russian insurgents in eastern Ukraine say preliminary results of a contentious referendum show nearly 90 percent of voters have supported sovereignty for their region. Roman Lyagin, election chief of the self-styled Donetsk People´s Republic, said around 75 percent of the region´s 3 million voters cast ballots Sunday. With no independent observers monitoring the vote, however, verifying the figures will prove problematic. The referendum took place amid sustained condemnation from the central government in Kiev and the Western community. A rebel movement has emerged in eastern Ukraine over recent weeks

Current and former U.S. officials fretted about the international standing of the United States on Sunday, as multiple global crises in the news made it increasingly clear that U.S. influence alone is not enough to assure either stability in general or specific outcomes favored by the Obama administration. (Snip) On the perception that the U.S. is weak or indecisive, Hagel said, “I have seen some of that, yes, and I think that’s the kind of reality that’s out there,” However, he added, “We are still the dominant power. Los Angeles - The US food industry´s responsibility in fueling rising obesity levels is put under the microscope in a documentary released in the United States this weekend. "Fed Up" examines why, while there is a boom in gym membership and a surge in shoppers seeking low-fat alternatives on supermarket shelves, two out of three Americans are overweight. "Obesity has been a problem for the last 30 years and I think we are reaching the breaking point," director Stephanie Soechtig said in an interview ahead of the film´s US release. A middle school teacher from Ohio got an extra-special Mother´s Day gift this year. Sarah Thistlethwaite, of Orrville, gave birth to rare identical “mono mono” twin girls on Friday after spending almost two months in the hospital. The twins, named Jenna and Jillian, were born holding hands. “It´s definitely, truly a miracle,” Thistlethwaite told NewsChannel5. Monoamniotic or “mono mono” twins share an amniotic sac. This kind of identical twins occurs in one out of 10,000 pregnancies. Carrying “mono mono” twins is considered high risk because the babies’ umbilical cords may become entangled or compressed while they are in

The Harvard Extension Cultural Studies Club said in a statement posted online that it plans to host “a historical re-enactment of a black mass ceremony that has a narrator providing historical context and background.” It said the event was intended to be educational and would be preceded by a lecture on the history and origins of the black mass, a ritual that parodies the Catholic mass,

What we see is what we´re going to get. Meteorologists with AccuWeather.com say that the cool weather pattern that has dominated central and eastern Canada this spring will prevail into the majority of the summer — meaning cool temperatures though June, July and August for Westman. The cool spells are being blamed on a persistent dip in the jet stream across central and eastern Canada, especially during June and July. In addition to the jet stream pattern, the record extent of ice coverage over the Great Lakes this spring has delayed the normal warming of the lakes. The combination of

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Democratic congressional primary race between former "American Idol" runner-up Clay Aiken and textile entrepreneur Keith Crisco remained very close and without a clear winner. Vatican City - A darling of liberal Catholics and an advocate of inclusion and forgiveness, Pope Francis is hardly known for fire and brimstone. Yet, in his words and deeds, the new pope is locked in an epic battle with the oldest enemy of God and creation: The Devil. After his little more than a year atop the Throne of St. Peter, Francis’s teachings on Satan are already regarded as the most old school of any pope since at least Paul VI, whose papacy in the 1960s and 1970s fully embraced the notion of hellish forces plotting to deliver mankind unto damnation. Largely under the radar, theologians and Vatican insiders say,

Democrats are thinking about using Internet balloting in 2016 to expand their voter base and select a president -- prompting Republicans to consider such a strategy to keep from losing ground. Iowa Democrats proposed the idea and several others during a recent Democratic National Committee meeting, saying Internet balloting could expand access to their unique caucus process to overseas military personnel, absentee voters and others. They have already conducted some interviews and are now embarked on a “listening tour” to get input from party activists, caucus experts and others, says Iowa Democratic Party spokeswoman Christina Freundlich. “We’re looking at different options,” she told

Hello everyone, I’m Michelle Obama, and on this Mother’s Day weekend, I want to take a moment to honor all the mothers out there and wish you a Happy Mother’s Day. I also want to speak to you about an issue of great significance to me as a First Lady, and more importantly, as the mother of two young daughters. Like millions of people across the globe, my husband and I are outraged and heartbroken over the kidnapping of more than 200 Nigerian girls from their school dormitory in the middle of the night. This unconscionable act was committed by a terrorist group determined to keep these girls from getting an education

As Barack Obama enters the twilight of his tenure, the debate over his legacy is beginning, but one conclusion already seems certain. It can best be described as “Honey, I shrunk the presidency.” Not since Jimmy Carter was held hostage by Iran has the Oval Office seemed so inconsequential against the forces of international darkness. The mismatch is particularly striking because smallness has been Obama’s choice. Although he is guilty of executive overreach at home, that bully behavior only sharpens the contrast with a foreign policy that is feeble when it is not comatose. The president’s estrangement from the demands

Most importantly, I think a president has to have a clear vision of where the country needs to go and clear ideas about how to get it there, and I think we’re very blessed in our party to have a number of people that fit that criteria.” Rubio was once considered to be a frontrunner

Sen. Ted Cruz, in a speech to fellow conservatives at the Federalist Society this week, provided detailed evidence of what the right calls the “lawlessness” of the Obama administration. The Texas Republican, in his latest McCarthyesque flourish, said he had a list of “76 instances of lawlessness and other abuses of power.” To his credit, Cruz made his list public. But perhaps he shouldn’t have. An examination of the accusations reveals less about the lawlessness of the accused than about the recklessness of the accuser. Cruz was particularly agitated about President Obama’s use of signing statements, executive orders, recess appointments and
